Thats what bothers me about the way the game is setup; its basically a single-player game thats played simultaneously with other players (its still running full blast on your PC). Some singleplayer parts can be played with other players in addition ot the MMO-only parts like the arenas and raids, but other than that I see no reason to pay a subscription to play a game that, at least the core of it, is still a SP experience.
Actually, all of it can be played with other players, and there are benefits for doing so. (Though they need to tweak the way social points are awarded, actually. Some things give a lot, others give almost nothing, as its solely based on shared conversations, each time you make a dialogue choice).
As for MP vs SP, it comes down to how you choose to play it. Some times I'm more interested in chasing the class story, other times I want to get involved in some group action- and thats the nice thing about it, is its completely up to me. There are a lot of ways to get in-game benefits and you don't have to grind battlegrounds or raids or whatever to gear up.
Nice shark, pretty shark.
Okay, I thought I heard a developer say certain early parts were SP only (maybe they meant a tutorial). I knew there were advantages to doing SP with others (a la diablo and borderlands). Don't get me wrong; I want to play so bad, but its a personal standard not to play MMO's (not b/c I don't enjoy MP games) but because (a) I don't have a solid 'net connection and (b) its a lot of money to dedicate to one hobby (initial cost+subscription over X number of months/years) that theres no long term return (i can sell my 40k stuff at a later point, can't return subscriptions lol). Now if there is a base game that is SP only AND doesn't require a subscription, then I'd get it the day it comes out!
Not sure what this would refer to- there isn't really a tutorial, as such, you are simply tossed into low level combat and questing after a brief conversation with an NPC, which serves as a welcome to the planet and the start of the class story. There is a introductory help sidebar for the basics of movement and combat, but I wouldn't classify it as a tutorial
But even in the class quest story areas, you can have people with you. They can't participate in the dialogue, but they can come in with you, watch the conversation, and participate in any resulting fights.
Nice shark, pretty shark.
Thats probably what it was. It was a developer talking so it wasn't just random musing but I guess he just overemphasized how long that period would be![]()
Huh? I was pointing out that except for the initial dialogue (which is about a minute, assuming you don't skip through it) there is no solo-only content. None.
Except perhaps the space missions, but thats a rail-shooter minigame.
Nice shark, pretty shark.
Those rail shooters killed the whole game for me. Where's my space dogfights?
You can't spell manslaughter without laughter!
A bit much to expect from an MMO. As is, they're fast and fun, something to do for a few minutes between long hauls or while all your slaves (er, companions) are off doing the dirty work of crafting.
They bring in decent cash, too, and the fleet commendations are a nice alternative way to access non-standard gear.
That said, Lucas Arts really needs to do another X-wing style game.
Nice shark, pretty shark.
Unfortunately, space combat sims are largely dead right now and have been for quite a while. The only franchise that I can think of that's still functioning is the X series (which is just about to get an overhaul when X4 comes out early next year), and that's more Elite-focused than space combat sim. The fact that the final X-Wing game was somewhat lackluster certainly didn't help at all, though.
As for SP vs MP, as others have noted virtually everything can be done with a party. You don't have to play the game that way, and there's a lot of content that can be completed with just your companion. In fact, your companions are designed to help out in that regard. If you want to play a glass cannon, then you can set one of your companions up to tank while you take down the enemy. This allows players to avoid being forced to group. At the same time, pretty much every quest hub has at least one mission that requires a group to complete. And the Flashpoints (i.e. dungeons) require a full group of four players.
My primary complaint about groups is that the maximum group size - four - seems a bit small.
I love the space combat myself, not that I'd object to seeing a more free-roaming dogfight style as well. I'd rather they do something like linked missions first though, where the bonus objectives impact on the difficulty of the next mission.
The solo vs groupthing is handled brilliantly, as Eumerin says above you don't have to group to level up at all, but if you want to play with a friend you can do it from after the first conversation which lasts perhaps a minute or two. This suits me well as I like to level solo and group for RP, dungeons and socialising. Actually it was only a day or two ago that I started grouping for flashpoints (the story was just too engrossing not to continue with), I have to say The Black Talon is one of my favourite 'dungeons' of any MMO I've ever played. Hammer Station felt a little less impressive after that, a bit disjointed but still fun. Especially when half my group died to an environmental hazard, that was hilarious.
Had my first technical problem last night, got booted from the server, logged right back in and was confronted with a one hour wait. Still beats a six hour queue for WoW I had on launch so I'm not too worried.

Had that problem as whell.. It seems that the player are quite unevenly distributed among the servers. Apart from that I am absolutly loving this game!
A little, I actually had a short queue first thing this morning, which surprised me greatly. Many of the other servers were listed as 'light' population which is more what I expected at 8am
Had an odd moment with the last boss on hammer station. At various points he does a burst which knocks everyone back. Well, I had gotten around behind him, and was flung off the edge into the huge open shaft that housed what I assume is the weapon mechanisms (in the typical star wars fashion, there were no guard rails around the huge open pit) Died and got booted back to the republic fleet. Luckily when you go back into to flashpoints, there are essentially checkpoints so you don't have to run back through the whole thing.Originally Posted by eldargal
I also had a dropped connection during that flashpoint, and when I logged back in, I was hanging dead in space, outside the station.
My biggest problem with Hammer and Athiss is they don't have the conversational trees that Esseles and Black Talon do, so you don't earn much in the way of social points. I really want to get to Social IV, and pick up the Deathclaw outfit on Taris, it looks rather good, and is fully moddable.

Hehe, hanging in space sounds amusing. The incident with my group was:

I remember that fight from the stress test (as a bounty hunter). It is just a hard fight, over all, especially if you take a lot of damage from the initial waves. I pushed my Bounty Hunter pretty hard just to see more planets in the stress test, and found that some of the solo fights as you go on get increasingly hard, but I'm not entirely sure it wasn't because I was falling behind the leveling curve by skipping stuff. But the story missions increasingly had fights with elite mini-bosses with a _ridiculous_ amount of HP. The BH story mission involves fighting a gamorrean one on one, and it had roughly 3x the amount of HP I had. And it hit like a truck- I decided to come back later.
As for that bit on Hammer, yeah... I had my suspicions about those. After so many games over the years, that kind of situation automatically triggers my paranoia.

I'm hooked! Love it! Got a kick-ass R27 Sith Assassin, butchering people left, right, and centre in the Warzones.

So since I wont be able to play TOR, by choice or by design, I started watching a walkthrough of the trooper class (the first choice of class if I were to play) and the guy who recorded this video ran into a hilarious glitch at around the 18 minute mark! Major Spoiler!!! If you haven't played the trooper yet, don't watch!!!

There another glitch, similar glitch in the jedi knight story too but I don't have the url.
Yeah, there is a tiny Jedi Master Satele Shan that pops up in the knight storyline at times. Had it during the stress test, but didn't happen in the live version. Very funny when she sits down and completely disappears behind the armrest of her chair.

In the jedi knight video I saw, she never appeared, although that could have happened during a split second of lag.
