Re: Defiance Games - Alien Wars

Found this photo on the Defiance Games facebook page. Hadn't seen it before, but it shows a preproduction marine next to a couple of assembled preproduction bugs.

I found it interesting, as it gives an idea of scale between them.

Yes, it's garbage. The big question is whether the casting or Tim's sculpting is at fault, and whether the proper casting method produces better results than whatever rapid prototyping process they used for that example. And this is something we're only likely to find out next week, when we see the actual models.

That sculpt and paintjob look pretty rough. Neither is helping the other.

    There is now officially plastic!

    Long link is loooooooong.

Anywho, the test shot went well. There was some flash which Tony explained is a result of the plastic gates being cut too small and thus the pressure forcing the mold apart. They will be widened a bit and a second test will be done either later today or tomorrow. They used standard high-impact polystyrene for this without the gray color normally added, hence the translucency.

I thought they weren't doing test shots? Also, the flash isn't the problem. Miscasts however, are.

Its nice to finally see something physical. If they ever do turn up though, I'll be press molding the torsos to make the full set.

Thats looking like a bit more progress finally. Is it just the camera, or os the material really that pale in colour?

That's not the final material the production sprues will be made of. The tests sprues are made of an undyed transparent plastic.

I don't know if its a trick of the resolution or the lighting or what, but those marines look like their made out of playdoh. I'm glad to see DFG finally come out with something, but these don't really look like the "superior product" they were made out to be.

It's the resolution, if nothing else - a width of ~50 pixels in a lossy format really isn't enough to give a good idea of the quality. Once we get some better photos I'll be going over everything I'd like to see fixed in time for the kits I actually want to buy.

Re: Defiance Games - Alien Wars

The pic is so unclear, it makes the helmeted heads look quite oversized. I'm hoping that better pictures showing what I hope will be more detail on them will help with that. So far the head with the cap looks the best to me because the proportion appears to be correct, but again that's just an impression based on a blurred photo.

From the general stance, some of the minis do appear to be leaning to one side, but that could just be a hastily done assembly job when gluing them together. Something else I'm wondering about are the rifle barrels. One problem with Mantics latest Corporation release that I'm hearing from folks who've received them already, is warped gun barrels. I'm curious how Defiances have turned out.

Having said all that, I do still think these look promising.

They should be fine. Unlike the Corporation models, these marines are made with proper plastic on proper sprues using proper metal moulds. I wouldn't expect them to be any more vulnerable to restic-style warping than any other plastic miniature.

some more assembled pics but no close ups though

It is bizarre that there aren't close ups. When I take photos of something I've painted, one of the first things I do is close ups.

    Wheres the like button?

I'm still hesitant about these minis, and defiance games as a whole, the way they have handled this whole think was bad, from a customer point of view, and profesional.

If the marines turn out to be fairly good, I may be tempted, but until theres lots of close up shots, sprue shots, etc, I'll be holding my wallet tightly.

Some new closeup pics of "almost ready" test sprues.

    http://www.defiancegames.com/index.p...eak-commencing

I'm curious what the regulars here think of these as I thought they look pretty good. I can see a few slight mold lines on some of the arms and hands, but it doesn't look any worse than I've seen from other companies. I would like to see some closeups of a few assembled and unpainted though.

In their "finished" form they look ok. Having recently seen the newer (current) Epic IG however, these appear no more detailed (the Epic IG have seperate finger detailing and faces) - not a great advert considering Epic is 6mm.
