    Prowla's Terrainy Bits

Thought to present some terrain projects of mine.. There's more than one going on at the moment, but let's start with the craters, since I just finished one! It's one of the GW moonscape craters, more details in my blog.

Thats very nicely painted. Did you add sand there to the edges?

Edit: Your blog is fantastic. I would recommend it highly, especially to anyone starting out.. Some really good articles- I didn't learn that trick with the card and foam until years of awkward glueing had passed.
Throw some pic of your other stuff up please

Started a new project! What's better terrain piece than a ruined tank? Here's a clue..

Some slow progress on the piece. Engines took a few days to put together, with all the putty work. Next step, detailing!

Wow, nice job! Really looking forward to seeing it painted up. How are you planning on detailing the base?

I have no idea about the base yet.. I'm thinking about an impact crater, but it would be fun to put some building ruins on it, as well. Crash landing and hitting the only building on the battlefield? Maybe a dead beakie or two, too.

Made a bit of a wall template, in case someone wants to get their building walls in certain size/shape/style.

    PDF downloadable here: http://prowla.net/?p=361

edit: Link now has also a PDF for separate detail bits.

Hmm, maybe I should update this thread sometimes

Anyways, got started on a Munitorum HEMTT truck. The scale is about 1:40, so about 11" long and 3" high. It's supposed to be either destroyed or deserted, not sure yet.

There's good scale shots floating around the internet, so I printed one of those out and used it to measure things out. Created a rough frame shape with Inkscape and printed it out, glued it on cardboard and cut them out. Made some mock-up wheels and used a couple of foam blocks for mock-up cabin and engine cover.

Moving on with the HEMTT, couldn't find any good truck wheels around so made my own for casting.

The master was made from foam, plastic tubing/rod and some cheap sculpting clay, then master mould was cast in silicone. After that they were cast in dental stone (pink) and since I decided to be lazy, I just made the outer part and rounded it out with some depron foam.. Would have been easiest just to cast 2x per wheel and glue the sides together but still, lol. Some tube was used as axles and larger diameter tube as attachment in wheel, sunk into the depron.

Main shapes start to come together, started doing some cabin detail and made a crane for the rear of the truck. Was thinking about making it a mini-diorama with dead guardsmen et al, so there would be unloaded crates around which would also allow models to climb on top of the platform.

So.. the truck is on a pause as I try to figure out the engine/exhaust bits, and the Stormraven is loaned out basecoated..

Meanwhile, I actually managed to finish at least one small bit of terrain:
