The bearded one sets sail: Dreadfleet painting log

since I bought dreadfleet, it'd be a shame not to paint them and post them, wouldn't it? I started off with the stalwart dwarven ship Grimnir's Thunder to get my bearings, and a solid steel deck to avoid that damn seasickness!
The result of the first ship:

Luckily I took some pictures of all my steps, among other things to show off the difference between basic metal and metal with the addition of a wash. Here we go, step by step:

First some basic layers of the non-metallish stuff

Then the metal, I always hate this part.

Luckily washes come to the rescue! They're a blessing from the deity of painting I tell ya!

And finally the painting of the water. I'm pleased how that turns out. The Dreadfleet White Dwarf with the painting guide for water was a sound investment.

1 down, 9 ships, 9 auxiliaries and dozens upon dozens of terrain peaces and markers to go! * urgh *

Re: The bearded one sets sail: Dreadfleet painting log

no-no, your eyes deceive you! These are ghost ships! * makes spooky noises *
I got dreadfleet for my birthday 3 weeks ago

I've done some work on the Curse of Zandri!
Basecoating; bestial brown on the oars and deck, graveyard earth on the wicker and shining gold mixed with scorched brown on the gold (in hindsight not really necessary as I'd wash it with devlan mud).

Then time for the wash of wonder; devlan mud

And some highlights, on the gold as well (the pyramid mostly)

    * shameless * Don't forget to vote For some reason the very first vote from the very first view was a 2, I assume because he only saw the first 1 or 2 pictures, so I placed the finished ship at the top of the page te present a better first impression.

Meh, voting without leaving a comment is pretty weak either way. Good work on the ships so far.

The green on the dwarf ship looks great - vibrant but not bright, and the turquoise on the TK barge looks fantastic. Even the bronzey gold on the pyramid looks like it's a chunk of bronze, and not painted that way. Very cool

    Looking good, as always TBO.
Trying to convince Warseer that GW are anything less than perfect is like trying to teach a horde of zombies that lettuce is a perfectly acceptable alternative to brains.

Re: The bearded one sets sail: Dreadfleet painting log

Thanks, I'm tearing my way through these ships like crazy ^^ I'll be done with the non-sailships within days. The sailships will probably take me longer. I think I'll detest painting those sails... The shadewraith should be easy though. I only need to basecoat it with a white spray and wash it with thraka green and that's most of the work.

Beautiful work, and very convincing water effect there. Why isn't this a 5 yet?

    Great start to your fleet!

Those low-voters are a pain, it's sad to see a brand new thread that's just received a 1 or 2... I've gotten some myself.

I never noticed the exposed ribcage before. Disgusting. ...so, given that, a great choice in skin color!
