Post Hybrids in Space Hulk 3rd Edition rules discussion

This thread I am hoping will serve as a main thread for covering aspects of using Hybrids in Space Hulk 3rd edition

I have been playing around with using some orks space boys to represent hybrids in my gen cult while play testing Space Hulk 3rd edition.

I have tried playing space hulk 3rd edition using two different rules for each game to try different methods.

    1st method
    1. genestealer hybrid acts as a regular genestealer does with exception that they may make a ranged shot. 2. we have added a hit point marker system for each marine that is for only ranged shots. 3. to score a hit a hybrid rules three dice and two of the ruled dice must come up matching to score a hit then combining both those number check a number list to see what damage is inflicted. the number can range from minor wound that will fill one box, major wound fills 2 boxes, critical wound fills three. on a minor wound the box is checked on the marine sheet for targeted terminator, a marine has five check boxes. each time a marine gets a wound of type those number of boxes are filled once gone over the marine is dead.

will post the second method in short bit...

Why not look to the past? There are old hybrid rules that should work well enough.

But, off my own head, I'd have something like this:

Hybrids roll 1D6 in CC, no bonuses (the fact they have claws etc means that are not fighting at a negative modifier...). When they shoot, they are classes as being armed with an assortment of small arms - lasguns, autoguns etc. They shoot exactly the same way as the terminators, but all terminator models are classed as 'hard to kill', as the broodlord is.

Alternatively, you could let them roll just 1D6, they have to kill on a 6, no sustained fire.

Now, what about overwatch? You could say they can't (too poorly trained for the discipline required to do it properly). However, if they can, their dice rolls then matter. on 1D6, they can't jam - a distinct advantage over terminators. With 2D6, they can jam just like terminators.

We play hybrids as 1d6-1 in CC. They aren't Space Marines and, even in clunky terminator armour, a marine should be able to handle them with ease. We also only give them 4AP instead of 6.

We play their guns as normal storm bolters, though terminators are hard to kill as nedius suggests. Also, they cannot combine actions, since this ability suggests discipline and training to do effectively.

We allow overwatch. Their poorly maintained weapons jam on any double or any roll of a 1.

    Hi BarnEbiss.

I would suggest using the old rules for hybrids. If your Google skills are good you can find them online without much difficulty. The 1st edition expansions deathwing and genestealer will only be slightly different from the new 3rd edition. And the Space hulk bible has lots (and lots) of nice additions from various sources.

If you are dead set on writing new rules for hybrids, then good luck to you, and remember that the mission goes hand in hand with the forces used to play it. You will have a very hard time writing balanced rules for space hulk forces without some idea of the missions they will be used in.

This, completely. When you write new rules, you can do it one of two ways. You can write them to fit with the existing missions (really hard) or write new missions to fit with the models (easier and more fun.)

If you wanted to.... you can find & use all the published rules from:
    Space Hulk 1st Addition
    Space Hulk 2nd Addition
    Space Hulk 3rd Addition
    Space Hulk “Deathwing”
    Space Hulk “Genestealers”
Rules for using Marines in Power Amour (White Dwarf issue) with minor changes to the to kill the target numbers dice will to bring them up to date…(now that we're using 6 sided dice again )

Then get out a big pair of sissors and cut out the rules you don't want to use (for me it was the genestealers psych rules, made the game way to crazy for me)

    You get….
    • Marines with Terminator amour and all there range weapons / close assault weapons / psyche powers
    • Marines in Power Amour and all there range weapons & close assault weapons
    • Pure strain Genestealers (0 to 6 blips)
    • Hybrids armed with ranged & close assault weapons

Note:call me boaring but its easer to use exsiting rules that were made for the game with a few tweeks than try to make up your own rules.... Its your game so play it like you want!

My main problem is making all the new blips with letters instead of numbers- anyone got a template?

Agree with everyone above- the 1st ed rules are totally compatible with 3rd, it's barely different.

    That really is simplicity itself.
If you want it cheap, just cut up a corn flakes box and paint one side black, and put the relevant letter or number on the other.

To be a bit more professional, buy a hundred 25mm round bases cheap from eBay. Paint the number or letter on the bottom. Or you could use a two penny coin.

You can find lists for the right number and type of blips online with ease.
