Gametable WIP - Currently painting: Fortress of Redemption

My uncle, who is a carpenter, gave me a most excellent christmas present, a gaming table for 40k:

If you're wondering why there's a giant hole in the center, that's where my Realm of Battle gameboard tiles fit. An extra support in the middle of the length of the table was added after this picture was taken, so each tile is supported by all borders. And because you don't have a large tabletop, you can easily take it apart if you want to move it. Especially since it is placed my attic, which is on the 3rd floor.

A demo shot with my yet to be painted terrain, some of my 'Nids and my WIP Grey Knights army. And of course, the Fortress of Redemption; I had to get it as it literally had my name written all over it. As you can see, the Realm of Battle tiles fit in flush with the table, so they don't move around while you play but you don't need to use the clips the board comes with. If you want to change the board set up, you can easily push a tile out from the bottom. The edge of the table kan be used to place your rule books, dice, drinks, reserves, casualties, etc.

And two more random photo's to finish the post:

Now I need to decide which theme to paint my Realm of Battle board in. And most importantly, find the time to paint the board, paint the Fortress of Redemption, finish the Imperial Strongpoint, build and paint the Imperial Sector which is still in the box and finish my Grey Knight army... *sigh* I really need to learn to paint more before I buy more plastic crack.

That is most definitely an excellent xmas present, I love how the realm of battle board fits so snuggly. Good job uncle.

I share your pain regarding fields of unpainted plastic .

Yes, that was one of my requests. Stops the plates from sliding around without the need of the plastic clips. I can always add to the board by adding 24"x24" plates from MDF or something, and because the plates are basically suspended by the framework, I can even add features as lakes, rivers, canyons or trenches that go below the level of the table, as long as the edges are supportable. But I'll finish my plastic mountains before I'll attempt such a project.

We should start an Plastic Crack Anonymous support group.

Well, the entire project took him about a year in total from start to finish, but it was basically made in some free time every now and again from left over scraps of wood he could salvage from the luxury yaght shipyard he works at, so I have no idea of the hours total. Both his sons moves the last year to some fix-em-up houses so he's been plenty busy with remodelling.

Yes, Yes... Awesome! I do like how there is room around the edges for reference materials, extra dice, casualties, reinforcements, etc... Very well done.

Brilliant table. My Uncle is a carpenter too but I ended up getting my self a Junior Table Tennis table. Collapsable. Stylish even. AND I get to play table tennis on it! Still wish I had a table like that though. Looks like the flat edge of the Realm of Battle is flush with the table surface too. Quality.

It IS a nice table. It should hold up well. A fine custom made table.

THAT said...I've got a ping pong table myself. Since we only use 4 feet by 8 feet of the top, there is a decent ledge along the two long edges and one end.

    Re: Gametable WIP

Well it's been long enough, time to get this project up and running again. A friend and myself have been asked to do some 40k demos at a Dutch scale modeling event held mid September, and we can't turn up with heaps of unpainted scenery now, can't we?

And I have lots of unpainted scenery to go:
    - Realm of Battle Board
    - Fortress of Redemption (awesome kit, and quite literally had my name written on it )
    - Skyshield Landing Pad (duos as a display stand for flyer models)
    - Imperial Strongpoint (two bastions and a load of Aegis Defence Lines, although 2 Quad-guns were already scavanged for my GK Dreads)
    - Imperial Sector (to 'ruin' somebody's day )
    - Blastscape and Citadel Woods (to get my area terrain on)
    - Various objective markers (need something to fight over, don't we? )

Don't know if I can finish everything up before the event, but I'll give it my best shot.

So, starting from the ground up, first up: the Realm of Battle board. I went with a bit of an earthy desolate plains look, with a warm deep brown earth in contrast with cold grey rock. I picked this scheme because it goes well with the colours of most armies and doesn't draw too much attention to itself.

Basecoated the earth with burnt umber, then drybrushed my way through medium grey up to beige in various mixtures and patches to create a natural look. I intend to airbrush various patches of a dark maroon red to create more colour differentiation and to make the slopes of the hills pop out a bit more, once I pick up a new bottle of paint.

A close up of the rocks. Airbrushed them in a dark grey, then drybrushed them up to a light steely grey.

And to do: skulls, and lots of them. A few drybrush passes with various shades of grey and beige should work fine I reckon.

Away from home for work now, so I hope to continue on Wednesday.

    Re: Gametable WIP

    A small update:

Drybrushed the skull pits from medium grey up to a beige to keep them somewhat muted. Wanted them to stand out a little bit, but not be too much of an eyesore.

Made the hills 'pop' a bit more by airbrushing a dark maroon red around the edges. And also, moar skulls.

A top view. I also airbrushed patches of the maroon red in various places, breaking up the monotone brown somewhat. Did I mention the skulls?

And my models feel right at home! I like how the brown turned out, I think it goes very well with the silver/white/red/blue of my Grey Knights and the beige/black/purple of my 'Nids. There's some skulls in the bottom right in case you didn't notice.

And I'm going to leave the board like this, at least for the moment. I'm quite happy with the result, but you never know when you get an idea to improve something.
Up next, the Fortress of Redemption. And, yep, you've seen that right, more skulls! Khorne would be so proud of me.

A little update on the Fortress of Redemption:

    First bunker annex is complete!

A skull doing his Kiss impression. :P

Also did some attempts at some OSLish effect from the various light sources on the bunker.

And the top deck with the missile silo closed.

    And opened.

Now for the other 3 parts.

    Thanks guys! Another update:

Almost 300 drybrushed skulls later, the main angel tower is finished!

Here with the completed bunker annex.

    And the front side.

I think I'll have the other 2 parts finished by the end of the week.
