Nothing prevents people from using the 25% additional stuff w/o the rest of the SoM rules, really.

For friendly games we allow people to take the SoM entries of their normal monsters. For example, a WOC player may buy the cheaper and upgradeable Manticore from SoM and put a chaos lord on it.
It is a tragedy that some people eat cheese-flavoured chips in the shower.
Yes, you are allowed to bend, break, alter or modify the rules to have more fun as long as your opponent agrees.
One of their best marketing ploys that GW has ever had for them is to set up a summer campaign and barely support the models after the campaign. For those who remember, they did this with SOC, Albion, and Lustria.(although I dont really remember any models from Lustria) Specifically, SOC is the prime example where whole armies that were created for the campaign, just faded to the background for the two years that they had until they dropped them all together for the 7th. The good news is that elements of those by gone armies are very valuable on the secondary market, if you can find them.
What I would do is to take your time finishing these models, if you are still working on them, and paint/convert them the best to your ability. Use them if you see them useful, put them in a display case if you dont use them. If they are not started on, I may either start them up if you really see a use for them, or sit on them for a while. Five years after SOC the models were so rare and in demand that they went for a STUPID ammount of money.
Definately. This model is just ace.
And as always, Jind has the innate ability to make everything sounding awesome.
For the general discussion...I'm in the camp of "ask if it is ok, then go for it", mostly because I suffer from the Shiny-new-monster-syndrome as well. Only my wallet sets some sort of limit, since reason did not.Ah well, one can never have enough big gribblies, I guess...

Apologies for the threadomancy...
Just thought I'd add that Monstrous Arcana has a scenario called a 'Monstrous Confrontation', where you add an extra 25% to your army using binding scrolls. All other rules are the same. Seems like what everyone is doing anyway...

Yeah, no doubt. I can see lots of possibilities, some examples:
1) just allow pacts and binding scrolls in a regular game
2) create that weather chart I've always wanted to do, one of the result would be a storm of magic (and then see 1)
3) new terrain: monster lair. If someone gets nearby, you roll on a monster table, and the monster that's rolled pop out, and might attack or ally with the dude who popped it out.
edit: hahaha, threadomancy, and I even posted there already xD silly me![]()

I own my own copy of Monstrous Arcanum cause I'm a fluff nerd, but don't own any of the models. I'd love that you could take monsters in your rare choice... only problem if GW did that, you'd get the argument that's raging in the 40k section regarding the use of FW stuff even thou its been rubber stamped by GW
I totally get what you mean the monsters allow you to make more personalised armies. while arcane fulcrums just hands even more power over the game over to the magic phase.
This is a 2500 point Monster Army I'll be taking against my friend's Bretonnians for shots and goggles. I'm paying an extra 25 points to give my Lammasu the General's Inspiring Presence rule. This list happens to be exactly on the 2500 point mark.
Lammasu: Str 4 Magic Breath Weapon, General
Bull Taurus: Breath Weapon, Frenzy, Hatred
Manticore: Scaly Skin 4+, Frenzy, Hatred
Cockatrice: Poisoned Attacks
Dark Emissary: Level 3, Lore of Shadows
6 Trolls
6 River Trolls
Stegadon
2x5 Cold Ones
3 Giants
The plan is to use the Giants as my anvils or, if it looks dire, as redirectors (although that is the primary function of the 2x5 Cold Ones). I chose to give the Lammasu the Inspiring Presence rule instead of the dark emissary so that it'd be able to lend its leadership where it is needed (such as babysitting the four stupid units in there...). However, being a large target means that this model can go down on the first turn to a good volley of trebuchet fire. The Bull Taurus will be going after rank and file whereas the manticore will be taking it up with tougher opponents. The cockatrice is really in the list because it's such a cool model. I think one would need to field 2-3 for the petrifying gaze to begin to have any reliable impact.

Hurr hurr...I am a fan of taking stupid choices. I really feel Forces of Order armies are missing out.

All of my games are "very relaxed" friendlies, I can't see my regular opponants having any problem with me bringing monsters so long as I don't completely spam them. I always lose anyway.![]()

Monsters are more balanced in larger games, 2400 points or more, I guess
