Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

    Hello,

My name is LOKI73 and I have an addiction to plastic crack! To be honest, I have allot of armies and have had allot of armies over the years, not just GW, hosts of other games and do-dads. I recently got married and I love my wife, she is very supportive in my hobby. I manage my time between work, hobby and family time. Gone are the days of up all night paint-a-thons. New army of the month club, I will have to say good bye too thee.

The old me would buy allot for each new army that struck my fancy. I over bought and didn't use stuff, then sold it on ebay. I’d assemble whole armies paint a few of the models then sell them on ebay.... rinse and repeat. This was financially irresponsible. Not only that I’d play with the models for months sometimes 1/2 done. Until I grew board.

I see this allot in gaming, masses of unpainted armies pouring over the tables. Now I know everyone is not a painter but even the basics can be learned and executed quickly. Now don’t get me wrong I have completed projects too, I have 2000k in grey knights painted. Before that it was Eldar.
Before that it was Tau then Space Wolves. But that spans over ten years.

Having a family, things change of coarse and I want to be better at things. So I have decided to change my habits in the New Year.

    1. I will no longer buy armies/models in masse.
    2. I will limit my allowance to $40 a month, subject to the requirements of the family.
    3. If I can I will use my commission monies only to support my hobby and or trade/ private sale.
    4. I will take a look at my current armies later and trim the fat. See what I use see what I don't. I will not be selling whole armies unless I really feel like I no longer want them.
    5. And this is important! I will finish projects! Let me say this again! I WILL FINISH projects!
    6. I will buy in reasonable increments and paint accordingly. I.E. if I have the money for only a box of savage orcs. Ill buy them then paint them. But until they are finished I will get nothing else. So monies will be spent sometime in the first week of each month when time permits.

For now most of my armies are in the garage, not in my house. I'm not staring at a bajjillion unpainted figs!

I know I know, " but your starting another army!?"

Well, this is a test of my patience. Can I hold to a budget? Can I complete a project? Hopefully the discipline I learn from this will get me to finish the other projects I have and maybe bring back the excitement of the hobby for me.

So I will be starting and logging my progress to keep accountability. My goal is to reach 2500 points of painted ORCs. Why fantasy? Well I haven’t completed a fantasy army scince 1993! I have a 40k army that’s done and one close to being done!

So cash on th gaming envelope is zero!

I have on the desk 5 boar boys and five savage orcs.

Heres what hope to mass up:

    Wurzag
    X12 boxes of savage orcs
    Aracknarock spider
River trollz box (cause they’re cute)
X1 box of savage boar boys

BTW please don’t say, “ don’t take this or that in the list.” Really I don’t care im doing this army for the fun of playing and modeling not being competitive. Thanks a bunch Ill have pics up soon!

I'm really looking forward to following this log. I have an interest in starting an all Savage army and having had a quick peak at your 40k logs, I can see we are in for a treat!

I need to take a stance like you! I currently have 2 armies near completion and a 5k army thats near enough unpainted.
I buy things in big bundles and cant let a forum offer go if its good even though I dont need it!

I look forward to seeing how your orcs go and how you stick to your budget/rules

Exciting, sounds pretty similar to what I've been doing for a while. Hobby diet. I commend your efforts! I've managed by attending to my half complete armies. I'm on my second year of TOFP, and painting 200 points a month has been a great way to pace myself. If it's a busy month, I paint a hero. If I have more paint time, I will assembily line some regular infantry men. Feel free to check out my PLOGS at the bottom of the post.

Best of luck, and it's never too late to jump on the TOFP

The Tale of Fantasy Painters. It's in the Group Project Logs and basically we all have the problem you have - we have more than enough minis for a whole lifetime to paint...

So you enter, say which army you want to accomplish and then post roughly 200 points of stuff every month. Others comment on your work, you can comment on others...all in all it really helps to motivate (I'm doing this the first time this year, and so far it really helps!)

OK decided to up the stakes a bit. I went with $100 per month, HOWEVER! I can only use paint sales or sales form ebay. So for miniatures I have painted plus extra cash I found in my wallet yay! I have about 131 and I spent 93. Under $100 dollar limit:

    box of savage orcs
    box of trolls
    wurzag METAL!
    Green paint!

Lets see if I can paint em all before Feb!

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

OK here are some wip trollz! Ill have some savage orcs up next week. But these are in my army.

    So far I have collected:

    Wurzag

    box o trolls
box o savage orc boar boys
    box o savage orcs

trolls are WIP below. IM going bright colors on this one! So everything is being based white or a light brown if your a gribbly.

Also this month purchases come too $94 dollars I have about 32 left in the imperial coffers! Soo ill paint till this stuff is about done and maybe ill get some more next month. I will have to also finish some commision projects as well to fund the next phase.

Good luck with this mate.. looking forward to how you do with this, and am in the same boat also.. many unpainted armies sitting around, many commissions that have been done for others to finish their armies, but never found time for my own.

Interesting color scheme though.. not too sure on the purple, but the brown/yellow and green colors are looking great together.

    Cheers

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Ok another update. I took the advice on the hair i dry brushed some blue into it and it looks like pretty kool. I think the blue tones go better with the over all scheme.

Also I based the whole army with my spray gun so everything I have has paint and is ready fro brush time.

So for TOFP i'm doing the trollz and 10 savage orc archers. Here is my quandry.

I have three units of 20 archers planned, with command - champion. and two units of thirty savage orcs with double hand weapons 6x5 full command.

I was thinking maybe do 3 units of ten archers and three units of thiry savage orc warriors with command?

Looks gooed - get going and you'll notice you can amass armies quickly! I've done this for years (buy max of 2 new boxes with a max of 2 others in the painting process) - works like a charm. I lost my way though as I amassed Empire and Skaven armies alongside my more 'current' projects (TK's and Chaos).

Like the colours of the trolls and the army shot looks nice as well - should be good when finished!

Did a few more things on the trolls. Ill have pics up wed. These guys ate not easy and the orcs have been hard to rank up. Frustrating.

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Good plan you have there ... almost the same as mine (I need to finish some of my armies, too)

Lovely Trollz, the blue works better than the purple IMHO, but blue works well with green in general ...

I'd go with blue or red for the tattoos too.

Regarding you quandary with the Savage Orcs, I'd do three units of 10 archers without command, two units of 20 Savage Orcs with add. hand weapons and full command, and one huge unit of 50 Savage Orcs with add. hand weapons, full command and Big Stabba (maybe even a couple of Big Stabbas in the 20-strong mobs, too).

Anyways, I'll follow this plog, and maybe even shamelessly loot some ideas for my own (planned) Savage Orc tribe ... that I'll start WHEN I've finished at least one of my armies !

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

ok update time! Here I have five savages and three trolls.

some pics are blurry. I need a unit filler idea. About the size of four 25mm bases in a square.

I was thinking a savage orc on a old broken column pointing his spear toward battle!

Also highlights seem a bit lost on the pics. Especially the green scales on the trollz.

Nice painting. I like the tattoos that you've put on them. I have had the same problem with photos washing out highlights on green so I'll believe that they look even better in real life. I look forward to seeing more.

Love the color choice on the trolls, and the orcs are very nicely painted. Thanks for posting them!

What color are you using for the string/rope on the savages?

Also, it looks like you missed a bone hanging fron an ear in that first photo
