Lovely Trolls, but indeed you missed a couple of bones on the ear of the one in the first picture ...

I also like your Savages, very well done, nice and fine tatoos, very very good painting.

Some more savages for the fight! WIP!

I have gave up the idea for the Aracknarock spider in the army as I opted for a giant instead. I hope to make him look like a giant troll with woad markings on him.

I have also I changed my plan a bit. I figure ill need about 8 more boxes of orcs. So I figure ill paint 20 orcs then do a character or trolls or something. Lost an ebay auction. That would have cut my costs big time. But still on the $100 budget. Im finding this fun but challenging. I want to buy the miniatures I need. But im not to stay on target. Its hard.

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Woo hoo ten more savages down!

The red guy was my prototype paint scheme. I thought he came out neat but I couldn't stay away from the green! He came out nice I think!

Hope you like them next up is Wurzag! then I will do five savage boar boys. I got to thinking about the center piece of the army. I was going to do the Aracknarok BUT it is goblin driving and my friend wants to do that for his gobo army. We try not to have to much redundancy between our armies. So i was thinking about converting a Stonehorn from the OK. putting a howda on the back and filling it with 4-5 savage orcs for fun. Ill be selling some space wolves to get the money for my Feb allowance. PM me if your interested I have allot. Anyways. The highs painting were getting them done. I thought ten orks would hard but it wasnt. I had a plan and the paints out before hand. I will follow the same organized plan for each paint session and or project I do.

Funnest part is painting the war paint! I love it.

Oh almost forgot! 15 savage orcs painted and 3 river trolls!

Need eighty more savage orcs, 2 more shamans, five more boar boys, three more trolls and ill be getting the beastmen ghorgon thing to use as my giant. may even do a chariot savage style with a big stabba on the front! Lots of ideas! TTFN!

Oh my total expenditures for the month $115.47 US. Some of this accounts for buying in December. thx.

I like the red orc, but the green ones look better IMO ...

And that warpaint reminds me of Braveheart ... FREEEEEEDOOOM !

Nice to see you're sticking to your budget and your plan, I'm a bit below budget myself, but this month purchases were paints and a couple of Squig Hoppers

    Savage orcs are awesome!
nice to see an all savage orc army, it is so much fun to play.

lovely paint job on the orcs (tatoos are fun aren't they!) and the river trolls are fantastic. mud up to the elbows is just ace, be cool to spatter some on the orcs too.

love savage orcs and have had an all savage orc army for years.
in the new edition there are some awesome units.

however, you don't need a massive monster, savage orcs are hard enough to go toe to toe with any other army. they will even hold their own against chaos warriors and units of ogres.
think like an orc! don't fanny about with fancy stuff, just take big blocks of orcs.

toughness 4 is your defense. don't underestimate how ace it is!

2 hand weapons is what savage orcs want.
giving them shields effectively gives you a rerollable 6+ save against arrows, if you want it.
I field a big block of 40+ in ranks of 10, they have 50 S4 attacks in the first round of combat!!
add in a shaman with a lucky shrunken head and they have a 5+ ward save!!
(fingers crossed for "ere we go" as this is the daddy of all spells for savage orcs)
add in a battle standard bearer with a rampager standard (common items but it costs 55 so has to be a battle standard) and you don't need to try to restrain them because you can reroll the charge distance if you fall short. (I get into character too much and rarely attempt to restrain them anyway, just means you have that second chance to get a double 6 when the enemy is 16" away)

with bows they can also be great because they are a shooty unit that can mix it in combat. just shoot until things are in charge range then bundle in. shields can also be worth it on this unit as they can get the 6+ armour save in combat

spears don't seem to be worth it on foot troops. i have a small unit of 20 and they are, unfortunately, the first to get dropped if I have to downsize the army.

which brings me on to cavalry.

Boar boys are amazing and savage orcs hit even harder!!
its quite a dilemma though, as you have to choose between the extra strength from a spear and the extra attack from the additional hand weapon.
mine are old boar boys (unit of 20!) so they have spears and shields, but I want a second unit of new ones with 2 hand weapons as well.
a big unit of boarboys will terrify anyone! they will smash through most units.
if you want a magic flag there are plenty to choose from; an extra point of movement is nice, as is the ability to cause terror, but armour piercing is where it is at! charging in with the whole unit ignoring 4+ saves is just magic!

take a warboss, they are just awesome!!
he's already S6 in the first round of combat so magic items should give him more attacks.
last time I played, my big unit got charged by a massive ogre monster (thundertusk? stonehorn? can't remember which) it stomped down 4 orcs with impact hits, then my warboss stepped forward and just chopped it up!!

    other things:

I reckon you can get away with adding in trolls and giants and still call it a savage orc army.

    Trolls are amazing!
but is it worth +10 pts a model for privilege of them taking up a rare slot to deny you a giant?
mine are stupidly old, made of lead, and undeniably common trolls so that is what they are fielded as (though 12 is a tad excessive! but only 15 pts more than 9 stone/river trolls. IMHO its well worth it for 9 more wounds and attacks!).
chuck in a big boss with a talisman of preservation and that is as near as you'll get to a troll leading the trolls whilst boosting their LD to a reasonable level.

giants are wonderful but I have yet to get one.
I like the massive troll idea.
a Giant orc could also work, the last metal one was pretty orc-like.

in short; savage orcs are great when they get in there and break some heads, so let them do it

keep up the good work. this army will look ace!!

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Wow thank you for all that information!

here is what im working towards as it stands:

    wurzzag
savage shaman lvl1 (dispel scroll, ruby ring of ruin)
savage orc shaman lvl (lucky shrunken head, war boar)
savage orc boss (battle standard, rampagers standard)

    savage orc unit one:
x39 savages with extra hand weapons, full command)

    Savage orc unit two:
x40 savage orcs (full command, with bows)

    Savage orc unit three:
x38 savage orcs (full command, extra hand weapons)

    special choices:
    x6 trolls

x9 boar boys (extra hand weapons, full command, standard of discipline.)

Based on your recommendations does this look about right? I originally had the list at three units of about 30 6x5. with a giant and a chariot. This may keep the cost down too. I'm taking three shamans cause with taking wurrzag i need a dispel scroll and the lucky shrunken head.

Anyways thanks for the comments! I really appreciate your experience.

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Hmmm .... remember that when using Volley Fire, you cannot move or declare a "Stand and Shoot" reaction to a charge ... that could mean a lot less shots from that unit of 40 with bows ... and that's also why I think orc units with bows should be 10 strong (as in, the two ranks of 5 all get to shoot, even after moving a normal move, or when doing a "Stand and Shoot"), you don't even really need a Full Command for those units, they double as "trash drops" during deployment, can shoot, AND do some damage in CC due to Frenzy.

Nice list anyway, lots of magic, lots of hard-hitting troops, a bunch of Boar Boyz (and those are scary now in 8th ed), and TROLLS !

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

I've played savage orcs on and off for years but I'm definitely not "tournament elite". however, I have found savage orcs to be a fun and effective all round army.
regardless, it'll look damn cool on the field, terrifying to your opponent!

there aren't many magic items its worth taking for orcs but I think you've covered them.

does give you access to all the orc spells.

the only problem with this is if you do have to take any LD tests. this does leave wurzag as your general (at LD 8) because the battle standard can't be your general. but then again, savage orcs only take Ld tests when they have been badly beaten.

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

OK dropped the command and split the archers into two unit of ten. Had enough points for a savage orc lord (seed of rebirth, sword of bloodshed, potion of speed, and charmed shield) switched the lucky shrunken head dood to the foot regiment and made the unit of 38, 37 and big un's upgrade, the shaman with the ruby ring and dispell scroll has a boar now. 2499 points.

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

So my next plan purchase includes the avatar of war savage orc and dire wolf. And hope fully three boxes of orcs savage orcs. However I want to diorama the the base of the orc. Making it 50was mm x 50mm. I would make it sort of a unit filler but he'd go up front. Anyone think this is to much? Should I just stick with 25mm?

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

scenic bases are always nice, but I try and avoid them for characters. One option is to make it modular and have a slot on it for the hero on his regular base.

I *love* your bright orange trolls, and the savage orcs are really vibrant as well!
In victory, thy glory on earth
In death, thy glory in heaven
    Arise, therefore, Warrior!
With thy Soul ready to fight!

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Thanks. Your probably right I think I can get away with something less extrvegant. Im going for a good overall colorful look to the army. Its easy to overdo it though. I was dubious about how the orange was going to come out but I like it.

the colors on the trolls remind me of one of skeletor's henchmen in masters of the universe.

Hmmm ... I'd keep your AoW Savage Orc on a "legit" base (25x25mm), just for gaming purposes ... always nice to have the right base size in the game, even if those are sometimes hard to track (for example, Snotling Pump Wagons ... 40x40mm for the very old ones, some on 50x50mm, and the latest one should be on a chariot base 50x100mm).

Re: Savage Orcs! A new way to do this!

Ok legit base it is! =) So for feb I scored an ebay auction for three nib savage orc sets, Wurzag and a savage shaman. Now, being as my list has 9 board boys ill be converting the extra one to a mounted shaman using the Wurzag bits. I save about $44 US not inc tax. I also ordered The avatar of war savage orc! And the dire wolf. This put me at about $107 in expenditures for the month of Feb. Not to bad.
