The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters - Month 5 and January WIPS

    A happy new year!

    What is it all about?

The aim of The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters is to help motivate those involved to start and complete their Crews/Bands in the next 6 months.

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, their finished minis. They do this each month for the next 6 months. Starting with their first post on the last day of August 2011 and finishing with their last post on the last day of January 2012. So we have this month, whilst everyone signs up, to collect, build, convert, undercoat and otherwise get yourself ready to go with the first work in progress starting in September.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get one 'Joker'. For one month within the half year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 5 Months they have to come up with of painted and based figures. Even for the slow painters that should be at least 1 crew.

If the thread should become too big I will split it, but unlike the other Tales I would like to try and keep it in one thread.

    A WORD ON PHOTOS
640x480 seems to work best OR use thumbnails
Bigger than this results in the scroll bar of doom for many.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : No you are not too late. Yes you can still join in. Just post on this thread saying which army and how many points you intend to paint.

Q : How much do I have to paint?
A : There is a minimum of one mini per month with the additional WIP pics. Most will aim at more. But one breathtaking mini will take a long time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

    Q : Can I drop out?
A : No you can't, why should you?

Two henchmen for my Freebooter's Fate Brotherhood crew:

Maybe I'll add a picture of the whole crew later.
Next up are even more members of the Brotherhood. There are still five of them on my painting table. Especially one of the leaders should finally get finished so I at least have a legal force to field.

And as a bit of a bonus, Bilbo Baggins:

I had an hour to spare between teatime and dinner, so I started painting him on a whim.
I'm rather fond of him now.

Only two this month - I would have liked to have got the peacekeeper finished but I'll be leaving him till next seasons tale as he's just a bit too big for me to tackle at the moment.

I'm particularly proud of Mrs Lawrence. Much better photos in my log.

Not picture is the 7 cats I have to paint to go with Hamelin. I'd also like to get a Freikorpsmann painted up as they were, after all, what I entered this tale with.

Having said that, I think this months going to be quite busy at work and I have stacks of Uni work to get through so... its going to be tight.

My figures for this month were some Quar cavalry. Their steeds are called cadiers - looks kind of like a horse-guinea pig hybrid if you ask me...

The fellow on the left has what the quar call a derringer, but in game terms is much more akin to a shotgun. In the center is the officer ("Caerten" - captain equivalent), and on the right is a cavalryman with his saber drawn. While they are intended to be Crusader cavalry, they could easily serve as Royalist cavalry in a pinch or if need be.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

Re: The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters - Month 5 and January WIPS

I've painted 3 more minis for my Malifaux Pandora crew. The first is the promised White Lilitu, the next is a doppleganger, and the last is an Insidious Madness.

I will probably be going back to touch up the towel on the doppleganger, as I did not realize that the gloss and matt varnish would mess up the shading and highlights on it.

I had a lot of fun painting the Insidious madness, I made sure to use the same colours of purple and green just as the sorrows that I painted for this crew. I have one more to paint up, and I would probably just reverse the colour shceme with green in the middle and purple on the outside just to make sure it ties in with the rest.

I have also remembered to take some WIP on how I did the free hand on the bases, and added a short write up. I hope this helps.

And I've included a photo of a WIP NE Lord Compy Bits and the dreamer for Malifaux, that I got during the clear out sale that Wyrd had last year, as I would probably be working on these for January.

    Cheers!

@Whitwort Stormbringer: Thank you for getting me addicted to the Quar. When I first saw them when this tail started I thought they looked a little daft. Now I have fallen in love with them and I am thinking of getting an Army.

Yours look really well painted and I look forward to seeing your completed force.

Re: The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters - Month 5 and January WIPS

I had to do some bases fast to have something to post, I hope to show you five more models tomorrow. But for now a Snowgolem and Wendigo for a Malifaux Rasputina crew.
I tried to put some glitz in the paint to give the Golem some bling. It sure messes up the paint (dries up real quick even on a wet palette) and I think the blitz were too small. I tried it both in the white paint and in the matt varnish. It works but is very subtle, it just looks like gloss varnish on a first glance. On the positive side it made for a nice and rough surface which is good for the more snowy effect I wanted.

I put some in the snow on the base as well and tried some new basing techniques I think worked very well. But pictures say more so here they are:

Re: The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters - Month 5 and January WIPS

Hi Guys! Love your work, here are my comments for this month:

    Page 1

@ EmperorNorton: Painting looks good, but somehow the Freebooters Fate-Minis don`t get me. Oh well, saves money. That Bilbo is sweet.
@ Basher: Now that is a nice one, love him. The copycat must have been a hard one.
@ GomezAddams: That Kujaku Hime from Anima Tactics is a cool mini but really hard to paint. Well done.
@ Whitwort Stormbringer: Nice work, still don`t really like the minis, but the painting is cool.
@ Rotokultaxe: Good work, this Hulk effect must be hard to capture.
@ EasternHeretic: That white Lilitu looks strange, well done, but unexpected. The rest is the goodwork we have seen as standard in the last months.
@ Little Joe: Yes, the basing looks really good. Definitely an improvement! Like them.

Well, we are nearing the end of this small tale and it seems, there are 8 painters remaining.
I think a break is in order before I or someone else give it a new try. Perhaps 6 months interruption, what do you think?

@Little Joe; looks good shame the glitz didn't how you wanted it

the copycat wasn't that bad actualy i actualy asked my wife what colour to paint them she went through my paints and pulled out what you see and she's never even seen the wyrd minis

This month ended up being pretty crazy. I didn't get through nearly as much as I had planned to. Here are some almost finished pictures of my renegade sergeant. I still need to finish the gun, white areas, and base.

Next month's goals: Paint my Red Chapel Gang starter set, finish apostate preacher and ogryn.

Re: The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters - Month 5 and January WIPS

    Comments:
@ EmperorNorton: Subtly dynamic and strong pose on the sculpts, just using dark colours must be hard. It looks good, but I think her trousers are to bright. Nice Bilbo add-on.
@ Basher: As I have said before, quite stylish and a "suit"able paint job.
@ GomezAddams: Nice chick but the granny is better, a very nice sculpt well painted.
@DAGabriel: The pics are a bit dark but the bases shine, nice work.
@ Whitwort Stormbringer: I like that the "horses" obviously are not from this world. Nice cadier riders, I hope my first Quar arrive soon, long way from the USA, to lighten the time I got the "Of Spats and Pedrails"-book as a PDF for now.
@ Rotokultaxe: Ooh, nice. Unshaven, uncontrolled anger, I like it!
@ EasternHeretic: Succubus with the whip, nice if a bit light/bright, but I think it goes well with the base. The skinned chick is well painted but the model is a bit disturbing. Not bad but ..., strange. The insidious madness looks bright and right. And that last one is one hell of an expansive good model.
@Narcissus: that chainsaw would cut away the flesh all the time. Well painted though, I like the brownish green, and of course a nice conversion.

Well I ordered some Vaettir this morning and I accidentally read my mail, resulting in work. So I got no further, guess I will just have to post a WIP:

    Some answers:
@DAGabriel: I could do another tale, this one made me order way to many shiny stuff. But I can wait.
@basher: It worked out all right, but a bit too subtle. You need to twist the mini to get it sparkling (red, silver and blue flashes), but for some reason it works ace in the snow. It sparkles even when you move your head but not with the red or blue so much. A bit strange that stuff.
I actually tested it because I want to do a showgirls crew with this stuff, so now I know I have to get the glitz a size larger. So it went well in a way.

This month I want to finish the Raspy crew and try to get a game at my FLGS. I will probably not get much else done besides finishing the WIP, because I have a lot to do at work and sleep is needed as well.

Re: The Tale of Skirmish Game Painters - Month 5 and January WIPS

Wow, only 8 left? Well, here goes:

@EmperorNorton - The Freebooter's Fate minis are nice and you've given them a solid paintjob - the pose on the woman is very odd though. Love the addition of Bilbo, I'm quite excited for the movie even though it's still a year out.

@basher - your color choice on Seamus came out quite well, my only criticism is that based on that photo it looks to me like his pants and the strap on his hat could do with maybe one more highlight, since they're both very dark. Otherwise great job!

@GomezAddams - That Keito model is a very cool figure! The left sleeve is perhaps a tad overdone in droopy length, but otherwise I quite like the model. Being only one or two animals shy of an old cat lady (old cat gentleman?) myself, I appreciate the Mrs. Lawrence model.

@DAGabriel - from what I can see I like the models, but can't make out much of the paint job. Still, while it's hard to take bayou gremlins too seriously next to the other gremlins we've seen so far these two look like they mean business.

@Rotokultaxe - Lovely avatar! The skin stands out as particularly well done, which of course is vital for a model with that much muscle definition and bared skin. The pile of rubble under his feet is a nice touch.

@easternheretic - I really like the white Lilitu model. Hadn't noticed until this second viewing that her dress is sheer, which is a difficult effect to achieve so kudos on that. The insidious madness is very Lovecraftian.

@Little Joe - Interesting pair of minis! The snow golem looks good, if you think you could get a bit of a close-up showing off the snow effect on him that would be cool though. A close-up of the wendigo would be neat as well, since he's kind of small in those shots (in comparison to the golem, anyways). The WIP Britanaan marksmen look good, too.

@Narcissus - nice job on the Renegade Sergeant. That chainblade would totally cut his arm up, but being as Nurgly as he is I suspect he'll manage. Excellent painting and converting.

Nice. "Songs of Our Ancestors" is obviously great and gives the basic profiles for the 3 major factions, but I really liked the elite units introduced in "Spats and Pedrails" and you get a lot more fluff too, especially in the form of those little 1-paragraph to 1-page short stories which give a bit more of a feel for the quar universe.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

While I'm at it I figure hey, why not post a WIP that may or may not (hopefully may) make it onto my goal for this last month. The other minis for January are already done, so if I get to this guy he'll just be tacked on:

The model is a tank crewman, converted to have a couple of grenades strapped to his back and carrying a bogen (standard issue gun for the rank'n'file Crusaders)

Emperor Norton-Great job on the eyes and the highlights on the black fabric.

Basher-Seamus and the copycat make a well matched pair! The copycat is such a hilarious model.

GomezAddams-That Hamelin proxy is hilarious. I love the cat lady!

DAGabriel-Great basing on the Gremlins. How did you do the water effect?

Rotokultaxe-I love the blending on the skin. The bricks turned out nicely too.

EasternHeretic-Thanks for sharing your base painting tips. Looking forward to seeing the dreamer and lord chompy all painted up. Such a ridiculous pairing.

LittleJoe-Nice blending and highlights on the Golem. That must have taken a while to get it so nicely laid out. The highlights look quite uniform.

Whitwort-Looking forward to seeing more of these crazy models!

I finished the Renegade Sergeant. His chainsword would definitely cut his flesh. Maybe it is rigged to cycle through at the back of the blade and doesn't really damage his flesh. Who knows? Nurgle told me to do it!
