    Sons of Modinel Update

Well, here we are, over in the bright shiny world of the 40k painting logs. Please excuse me, it's not often I get to venture out of the murky depths of the Fantasy logs section!

    Launching straight in:

I have this 40k army I made several years ago. It's still pretty cool, but in desperate need of an update. My local store manager would like to put it in the cabinet, and I thought that was just the kick I needed to get it sorted.

This log isn't going to be particularly long. For those that know me from my Ogre log, it's going to be pretty different. I've got almost the entire army already painted, they just need fixing up here and there, a few conversions, and a little bit of paint. It shouldn't be a huge task.

There are two areas that I really need to address. The first is bringing the army up to speed with the latest Codex (it really it that old an army that it was built around the 4th Ed Marine Codex), and the second is rebasing them to fit with my icy winter board and terrain (link in my signature).

I'll do a couple of army shots, and then fill you all in on some stuff.

(click through for much bigger versions)

I'll start with a little out of character background. I originally wanted to paint a Raptors army. This was way back before they had any Forgeworld coverage, and when the only thing about them was the short blurb in White Dwarf around the time of the latest Armageddon war. The Raptors crash landed on a deathworld, and even as Space Marines they couldn't breathe properly. The entire Chapter would have been doomed if not for the Techmarines managing to modify some of the suits to incorporate a special kind of osmotic gill, saving a whole load of Marines.
Well, I started off with that, but after painting a tester model, I realised that the Raptors scheme was incredibly dull. Plain green isn't much fun. So I went back to the drawing board and decided on my own Chapter. After getting back into Imperial space, the surviving Raptors were taken for testing to make sure their geneseed wasn't mutated in any way. It was found to be good, and after obtaining all the samples, it was decided to create a new Chapter. Brother-Techmarine Modinel who originally came up with the solution to save the Chapter selflessly met his end while attending to the other Marines, and the Chapter was named after him.
The first Marines chosen to start the new Chapter as Captains and Veteran Sergeants revered Brother Modinel as their saviour, and throughout years of them overseeing, the entire Chapter came to worship their founder and all that he stood for.
The Chapter has an extremely high proportion of Techmarines, although each trains in a slightly different field, combining various forms of training. Techmarines fulfil the role of Chaplain and Apothecary in addition to various other fields. Because so many Marines leave the Chapter for training, it is completed in stages. Each Marine training to be a Techmarine will do so in four parts. After completing each part, they are permitted to paint a part of their armour red. Starting with the left shoulder pad, then full arm, half of their armour, and finally their full suit. Although it is not required, it is widely accepted that very few Marines make it further than the 1st Company without having spent time training on Mars. The revered suits of Terminator armour available to the Sons of Modinel are reserved specially for those at least part-way through their Adeptus Mechanicus training.

So that's all the background I think you need at the moment! Next up is the army list:

    HQ

    Master of the Forge
    Power sword
    115 points

    Troops

    5 Scouts
    Camo cloaks
    90 points

    5 Scouts
    Camo cloaks
    90 points

    Elites

    6 Sternguard
    Power fist, combi-flamer, heavy flamer
    190 points

    Razorback
    Twin-linked lascannon, dozer blade
    80 points

    6 Sternguard
    Power fist, combi-flamer, heavy flamer
    190 points

    Razorback
    Twin-linked lascannon, dozer blade
    80 points

    5 Terminators
    Heavy flamer, chainfist
    210 points

    Heavy Support

    5 Devastators
    4 heavy bolters
    150 points

    Razorback
    Twin-linked lascannon, dozer blade
    80 points

    Thunderfire Cannon
    100 points

    Vindicator
    Siege shield
    125 points

    Total: 1500 points

That's that. It has actually served me very well in games so far. I know it's minimum Troops and maximum Elites and Heavy Support, and I know I'm a jerk for doing that, but it's the only way I can still take all of my miniatures and transport them all.
Some keen eyed amongst you will be saying "the list has Scouts in, but I don't see any in the pictures..." and you're right. Being incredibly lazy, I never finished the Scouts. So they're on my painting desk right now. They look like this:

They have helmeted Pig Iron heads (but once they're on display if anyone asks, they're self-sculpted and cast), and are pretty much half way finished!

This has been a pretty huge introductory post, so apologies for that. To make up for it, I'll show you the first unit that will be getting a little update, the Devastators:

They won't actually be changing very much at all. I'll sort out a couple of areas of painting I'm not keen on, but mostly they're just getting their basing updated. The whole army is in a dusty industrial style, which fits my board a little, so on top of that I'll be adding patches of snow. Hopefully it should liven them up a bit too!

That's everything for now, comments and criticisms are more than welcome from anybody whenever. More pictures will be coming over the next few days. I'm hoping this project will be done really quite quickly (with time spare for something extra special at the end), so check back regularly!

If you've made it this far, a big thank you for reading!

Those models look excellent, especially the Devastators. Where did you get the heavy bolters from?

Absolutely brilliant stuff on every level. Most of the models are converted enough to make them interesting in their own right, but add in the painting and I'm floored. Will have to go look for pictures of your Ogres and winter terrain!

I second Terminatorinhell; the 'bullpup' bolter is brilliant. Any chance on getting a tute on how you did it?

Nice to see you over in 40k logs. I love your ogres ( and am not alone in that). Wonderful conversions and fluff. The chaPter has a great feel to it. Can't wait to see your progress

    Re: Sons of Modinel Update

I'm back! Thanks for the hugely positive welcome into the 40k logs, everyone!

The Wanderer: Thanks! The heavy bolters are the Chaos Marine plastic ones, with a couple of Sisters of Battle Immolator heavy bolter barrels for good measure.

Pekel: Cheers! The army really was made so that each model was a complete individual, so it's good it paid off! There are actually a lot of conversions in there with parts from all over the range - when they're redone, I'll show some off individually.

Terminatorinhell: Thank you! I needed something that would be a bolter but also double as a storm bolter if I had the spare points, so that's where the bullpup came from.

Dr Zoidberg: Sure thing! Just check below.

Aghast: Will do! I'll post up some close ups of the next unit I'm working on at any time, then some individual close ups when they're redone.

Hadriel Caine: Good to be here! I've been on Warseer for a fair while now, but that Ogre army has taken... a wee bit longer than I expected, so I've had nothing to show over here really!

    Ithor: Thanks!

Breazer: Thank you! The whole chapter was born out of the fluff, so it was actually sort of easy to add all that stuff.

    Techpriest: Thanks!

Alright, first up I've got the bullpup tutorial, and then some pictures of the newly finished Devastators. A super double update! I'm just trying too hard for my first few posts!
Oh and this will be a few posts to get all the photos in, so apologies for the... triple post!

    Right, let's go.

HOW TO MAKE A BULLPUP BOLTER

First up, apologies for two things:
    - I made that first bullpup about five years ago, so I don't exactly have a perfect recollection, as you'll see.
    - Slightly rubbish photos. I left my own camera at uni, and the one used for decent photos with a proper setup is a way away from my painting desk, so these are all done with my mobile. However, it's not a particularly complicated tutorial, so slightly rubbish pictures I feel do the job!

And of course the usual caveats apply: I'm sure this isn't the only way (or indeed the best way) to make this, but it's just what I do! If you want to do the same, you're more than welcome - I do tutorials to help after all - but if you find a better way, I definitely won't be offended if you point it out!

    1. Take a Bolter. Got it? Good.

    2. Cut off the grip. If you want to use it, make sure you cut off the trigger part first, otherwise it'll snap when you slice the actual grip. I learned this the hard way. Cut with a scalpel or hobby knife - not clippers. In fact, that's the same for this whole tutorial.

    3. Cut off the clip. Again, the vertical slice should come first, otherwise it may snap off, and you want a clean cut!

    4. Swap 'em round! Tidy up the bottom edge with a scalpel or file, so you have flat surfaces to attach them to. Of course, if you're having a Marine holding the Bolter, you won't nee to attach the grip.

    5. Flatten out the front of the bolter. Carefully have off the aquila and the studs. I made quite a mess here, but it's easy to clean up.

    6. Cut out two squares of plasticard. As long as the grip of the bolter, and slightly taller than the casing and grip combined.

    7. Stick 'em on either side.

    8. Trim 'em down. A careful knife or a file will both do the job.

    9. Cut another piece of plasticard, slightly bigger than the last. This piece is for the bottom, so as wide as the grip again, and as long as the width of the bolter plus the extra plasticard sides.

    10. Stick that on too!

    Re: Sons of Modinel Update

    11. Then when it's dry, trim it all down to make a nice square with even edges. I also took this opportunity to drill the barrel. It's at this stage you want to fill in the gaps. Liquid greenstuff would be incredibly useful at this point (honestly I don't work for GW anymore!), but I don't have any, so I didn't bother filling the gaps! I probably won't be using this one anyway (no more Marines to use it on!), so it doesn't matter.

    12. Now, I decided to improve on the original design, giving an angular section rather than having the whole front really boxy. Just a little careful slicing and it looks a little nicer.

    13. Now, if you're arming a Marine with the Bolter, first off you'll want an arm to do so! If you've only been following half the guide, now is the time you'll want to cut the grip off again!

    14. Slice the hand off, and tidy up either side so there are no finned bits between.

    15. The hand should be stuck on slightly at an angle so there's enough room to attach it to the arm.

    16. And now attach the arm! Easy at that.

    17. It was at this point that I looked at the Devastator Sergeant again and realised that the boxed area on the front was actually a different shape. Remember when I said it was a while ago? Well, luckily this method actually lends itself to the shape change quite nicely. Make two careful cuts and take out a small rectangular section. By lovely chance, the diagonal section from earlier looks quite nice with this bit!

    18. Add the arm and a shoulder pad and everything and it's all done! You will be able to have your Marine firing the bullpup, but it'll take careful use of various arms. If you're unsure how one would hold it, just pretend! the firing arm would make a V shape, as if using a stock. Check the Imperial Guard lasgun arms for an example!

    Aaaaaaand that's it! Easy peasy.

    Re: Sons of Modinel Update

    Alright, and now some Devastators!

The reason I did these guys first is that they had very little to change. I changed the tone on the pouches slightly (never liked the one I used before), but otherwise it's really just the addition of snow. It's actually surprising how well they fit with my scenery now, considering I made the bases several years before doing the scenery, and didn't think of them while making said scenery!
The photos are okay, but the flash bleached out my lovely gradient background. Sigh! I'll try to sort that out for the next pictures.

    Some individual close ups:

Interestingly, the Sergeant gets his legs from the old Iron Warriors Ironsmith. I mean, they're quite covered in snow now, but it's true!

That last guy is my favourite of the unit. You can't actually see very well any more, but a couple of the Devastators have had stabilising pads added to their lower leg plates - reminiscent of the old old Devastators - all the better to stay on target!
The reason the heavy bolters are the smaller Chaos Marine ones rather than the bigger Marine ones with the full backpacks is that the entire army is designed around rapid response - everyone fitting into Razorbacks or scouting ahead of the main ranks.

As for the rest of the army, I've finished painting the Scouts, I just have the bases to do. I'll try to get photos of them up during the weekend. I've also started converting the Tactical Marines into Sternguard, so I'll share the results of those soon too!

That's everything! Thanks for sticking with this big old update. If you feel so inclined, I'd love some comments and/or criticism, everyone is welcome!

Fantastic work, when I saw in the intro that you were rebasing I thought you were going to get rid of the current ones completely which would have been a shame as they look great. Those devestators look brilliant, looking forward to seeing how the rest of the update comes along.
