    BFG: Night Lord Raiders

The incense burned and its faint embers were choked by the darkness of the chamber. Many would strain their eyes to even see the orange luminescent glow but not he. Mortals had always feared the dark of the night and the pitch black of foreboding realms. All save for him, his brothers, and their lesser kind. It was where they had made their home.

As the smoke lifted from the burning vessel he cupped his hand and began to scoop the smoke in his palms. Then like one bathing himself, he would bring his hands over his head and ritually wash himself with smoke. Four times over himself he did this.

Dracuer had seen his father do this. In those rare moments of silence and solitude he would think back to his mortal childhood when he was witness to it. His father was a ganger, one of repute, and every night he would do the same ritual after waking. The bear of a man would kneel in his den with the vessel burning incense, his knife and auto-pistol lay by its sides, and he would wash himself with the smoke. Dracuer remembered the smell as it stung the nostrils but he never understood why his past father had done this.

He smiled as he thought back to this thought again. His sneer revealing to the darkness his sharpened teeth and their metallic hue. Dracuer would chuckle in the chamber as he continued his ritual devoid of reason until the alarms began to wail.

Hello everybody! So my gaming group has started BFG and I am happy because I have wanted to play this game for some time. I went with Chaos and have decided to paint them as Night Lords. I had tried to start a mixed Iron Warriors and Night Lords army some time ago that didn’t get far and the VIII Legion was next to non-existent, so this is how I am going to show them some love. Plus, that last GW thing I painted was with metallic paints and I wanted something different, so apologies to my Iron Warriors.

With this log I want to Chronicle the building of my fleet and introduce some fluff. So on with the PICS!

I will start with my Carnage, the Blood Oath

Still a PIP. The Ship was basecoated black and then it got one layer of regal blue and then drybrushed with ultramarine blue. The gold-ish area was done with tin bitz, then dwarf bronze, followed by a wash of devlan mud, and finally badab black. So far it's working for me but I was wondering if I could get the opinion of you, the viewer.

I am wondering if this passes well enough for gold? I am not a fan of the burnished or shining gold GW puts out and was surprised that this bronze comes close.

This part has been stumping me and I really wanted to get some opinions before I sat down and applied paint. I painted those bits of the ship tin bitz and having found a color for gold to use on the top portion of the ship, I was wondering what I should do about this. I do not know if I paint it gold it will look to "bling bling" or if it would be good. I was wondering if I could get some thoughts on this.

Thanks for taking a peek and thanks in advance for any suggestion to help a brother out

I think the choice of colour is great. All that thing needs is a few spots of white/yellow and red and you're good to go!

Thanks Satan! *never thought I would say/type that ever in my life

I actually forgot to ask about red. I like how the NL have that combo of blue, red, and gold but I couldn't figure out where to paint red on these ships.

I was thinking of something below the prow (under the top/gold half) but I am unsure as to what.

And what would I paint white/yellow?

    Re: BFG: Night Lord Raiders

Some slight progress has been made

The Blood Oath Has received a little bit of painting on some of her guns (I missed two of the little buggers on the "neck" right behind the prow). Seeing this pic, I think I will be going back to touch up all those spots and work on the antennas.

Next out of the dry dock is my main flagship, the Styx Class Heavy Cruiser: Grim Harbinger.

So far I have it blinged out with gold trim with a few other things left to do.

The dagger point of its prow was damaged at one point (and I like to pretend that this was caused from a ramming action against another ship). This got me thinking that I want to start modelling some damage on future ships. If anyone has good tutorials or references to some work I'd love to see it.

    Thanks for taking a look!

BFG will always have a fan in me!

Your bronzed colour looks really nice against that blue, well done. Personally, I like the belly metallics as staying Tin Bitz - I'm worried if you brighten those up the ship will look too garish?

If you want yellow you could paint the lights yellow. Or some windows if your detail hand is steady enough

Will you be putting up any battle reports? I used to have Chaos but I'm an Imperial collector these days. The Styx class was always a beast of a cruiser though!

I agree that painting up the lower portions in a more "brighter" metallic may be too much. Perfect for an Emperor's Children...but not so much for these guys. And on that note, I don't know about painting windows. NL are like cats and see perfectly in the dark...so I think they wouldn't keep any lights on to be painted

I may be getting a Despoiler soon and because it will be a BB in my fluff I will paint its trimmings in gold as shown here on this fella's shoulder guard trim. It's a darker gold and I will have to play around with mixing less tin bitz into burnished gold.

And I can post Batreps. I think those are under the 40k section of threads right? Some highlights though of my last engagement was a Slaughter dropping the shields and putting 5 points of damage on a Dauntless light cruiser in a single go. And the Styx is a sexy minx, before going down in flames she dropped the shields and put 4 points of damage on an Emperor Class BS. If only my carnage was at a better angle...I could have leveled that ship with a lock-on order...

I still got a lot to learn and grasp with BFG, mostly just figuring out a strategy, getting my ships to work well together, and using order more. It was a real eye opener to see the hurt my ships can do.

Thanks! I am going to try and paint up my current ships to the Carnage's status and then get the details done. This is how I will be spending most of my day today

    --

    Now for pics:

After my game last Wednesday I added antennae to the Styx, thinking it would use them for better comm with their squadrons, and removed what I think were cannons from the Carnage's side so it no longer looked like a murder.

and then new additions: The Violent Prodigy (Carnage Class) & the Hateful Errant (Slaughter Class)

I'm going to base-coat them and then getting blue on them at the least.

That's it for now folks, got to get painting!

    Hi Hushrong,

    clean paintjobs.

Perhaps some edges could a stronger highlight on the blue.
    As some examples:

Yellow dots to represent windows (or white or bright green).

Thanks horizon and thanks for the link! That ship is a beauty! Now I just need to step up my highlighting and figure out what colors made that possible.

Also, no lights from windows. Night Lords have a strict energy-saving plan in motion and hardly use any lights.

    -

Here is my fleet at the moment:

Here are the Hateful Errant (sl), Blood Oath (carn), Violent Prodigy (carn in black), and the Grim harbinger (styx). Four ships strong and will be growing soon. I have another box of cruisers to pick up at my LGS and some other goodies coming in the mail.

In my game last Saturday the Hateful Errant was glorious. With support one turn from the Blood Oath who had dropped the shields of my opponents Emperor Class Battleship and with the use of the Lock-On order, my slaughter scored several hits while creeping from the rear of the enemy ship. A few crits knocked out weapons and more importantly shields, and at the end of my turn the behemoth took eight hits. The next turn the slaughter was right behind the imperial dog and opened fire scoring multiple hits. The Emperor Class Battleship later suffered from a catastrophic explosion and the Hateful Errant had earned the glory to be painted next.

So, as can be seen in the earlier pic, my slaughter got some paint. She earned it. So I tried two things different with this one: First I painted Necron Abyss over the black base coats in an attempt to darken the blue...didn't go as planned. It is slightly darker but hardly noticeable. Second, I tried to add red and decided to paint this predominantly around the bridge on the nearest "honeycombs" on the back.

In real life, it looks a bit like lacquer (the pic shows my sloppiness). I really just don't like the look of it though, perhaps of where it is and that it borders the bronze? I really want to paint those parts blue and pretend that this didn't happen while looking for another way.

Then just some touch-ups on two other ships:

I did some drybrushing to the metallics. the Tin Bitz on the bottom got a wash to dull it and then received a drybrush to pick up the detail just a little bit. Then the trim on the top half received some drybrushing. The styx got it light and it looks alright but the carnage got one that was a bit more showing *I forgot I took off my glasses when I was drybrushing it.

That's it for now folks. I am going to do some work today and if I get free-time I am going to get the slaughter to look like it's two painted sister-ships. I do want to add red and would like some suggestions as to other things I could do or try out. Thanks for stopping by!

    Nice paint scheme ...
But IMO, there is too glod on the back of the ship ...

    Re: BFG: Night Lord Raiders

I had started to think the same way. The aft and prow are blinged out with rest of the ship bare blue. I thought to do the "spine" gold too, where the antennae and turrets sit to try and adjust it...but it would still be A LOT of gold.

I saw your NL ship, Little, and I'm envious on how you got red to fit with the blue and gold so well. Any pointers?
