    Just another BBLog

Hi, I am Korinth (which is actually my name)!

A few years back, studying computer science, I hooked up with some class mates playing blood bowl. Together we started a math/computer science campus league named Pole Axe after the campus site Polacks (-backen) which is pronounced similarly in Swedish. Being a complete newbie to the game I was adviced that playing Orcs might be a good introduction. I even painted a pair of them (very poorly) before I inherited a team from my GF's (who is now my wife) older brother. The inherited team was the Dark Elf team from which the Witch Elf in my avatar for this forum is taken. I enjoyed playing this new team so much that the other one got chucked away in a drawer and now resides in a cardboard container in the storage of our new apartment.

More recently, after my role playing group (at the local gaming store) disbanded we decided that we should try to get a BB league going. This time around I also want to learn how to paint my minis so that I don't have to play in shame. I also decided that I need to have a Dark Elf team that was actually painted by me. To say that I have no experience in miniatures would be a lie, but the only thing I had done so far was a touchup on the team I played, matching the colors on worn places, and a total refurbishment of their bases that previously was just painted flock.

I created an account here (before I created my account at talkfantasyfootball.org) mainly because I stumbled over this forum so many times in search of inspiration for painting, conversions and custom pitches that I figured this is the place to get creative suggestions, some motivation and proper critique.

If you are interested in following the progress of a total beginner/enthusiast on his way to expertise (hopefully), this is where I keep my Blood Bowl projects logged. There might be a few other board game miniatures along the way, but none planned at the moment of writing this.

    2 Runners { prime, paint, base }
    Σ 13 models

I won't even go in to the list of players in my Orcs and Golblins teams until I am well on the way with these first three teams. They both need to be stripped and get a new paint job, probably some conversion as well...

This first post will be updated with progress colors [ red => in queue, yellow => begun, green => finished ] and the latest image per team. If you want more images, scan the log!

    Cheers!

    Re: Just another BBLog

Since I recently started working at my new Ogres blood bowl team, I thought I'd post some images. Progress is going to be slow, since my time to spend on these projects is limited.

Anyway, I received the last of my 12 Snotling Player figures, so I started converting some.

    Snotling Player 1
    I made two different gestures.

    Snotling Player 3
Made a new shoulder pad from Ogre leftovers and moved spike from head to arm.

    Snotling Player 4
Moved spike from helm to shoulder, rounded helm.

    Snotling Player 6
Added spike to boot and removed all spikes from the wrist guard.

I need to do something to the Snotling Player 2 figure. I was thinking, maybe stepping on skulls or kicking one. Maybe even kicking a football, if it isn't to far fetched for Blood Bowl..

    Re: Just another BBLog

I was just thinking that I probably wont need more than 11 actual Snotlings, and in any case, I only have 11 of the smaller original Snotling slot-in-bases.

So my plan was to use the Snot crapping in a Human player's helmet as part of a score or turn/reroll marker. I thought of this while remembering something I saw in richy376's Blood Bowl log. He's a Blood Bowl conversion genius if you ask me, nothing like my comparatively small adjustments. Rather than a signpost I'd probably want to make some billboard or fence-like marker which the Snot could use to hide (almost) around the corner. In that case it would be more like a part of the dugout I hadn't yet planned for ...

I also have the smaller miniature of a Snotling crapping, from the preceding Blood Bowl Snotling set, which I could use for something similar. Maybe a score or reroll counter.

Any ideas or comments are most welcome!

Yes, got to love those minis! Took me quite a while to gather the set at a reasonable price.

I think I'll have to try the coloring scheme on some random Goblin figure before I start with these. They are really tiny, especially in comparison to the official Blood Bowl Ogres i decided to go with. I might even have a go with the ogres before the snots, but first I'll toy a bit more with small conversions for the entire team. There should be a GW Pack of Skull blister in transit (along with some bb minis that I couldn't resist putting in the shopping cart for the "free shipping"). :P

Speaking of buying miniatures I don't need right away, I'm currently on the lookout for Eldril Sidewinder and the second edition (goblin) Pogo Stick 2 to act as star players!

    Re: Just another BBLog

I decided to make a kicker out of the last Snotling mini on my to-convert-list for the team roster. The thin limbs of these beauties make bending new poses really easy. Also, I added a pair of larger spikes to the shoulder guard.

I bought the Pack of Skulls blister from GW, for converting the Ogres of my team. However the skulls in the blister are way to small for the proportions of my minis. I put one on an Ogre necklace as a shrunk head, and I might add a few halves I made to a base or so, but I wont do much more with them. It's time to get the team in playing condition.

So I'll apply some primer and then I need to clean my workspace from metal scraps. I'm going for a purple/pink (maybe baby blueish too) color scheme for the costumes. I intend to do blue Orcidas(TM) triple stripe shoes if that looks good.

It's time to get some time spent painting. I am hoping to start in the weekend.

Meanwhile, I decided to remove the pony tail on one of the Snotlings, and the result was not half bad. I love working on metal, it's very forgiving.

Sorry for the scew iPhone image though. I forgot the camera at work.

    Re: Just another BBLog

I couldn't make room for any painting this weekend, since my wife's birthday and all preparations for a dinner with the family.

However, I've had quite enough time to think about the next conversion project, which will not be the Norse Team, but rather completing my Dark Elves team in a down-styled less details theme. I was thinking the current figures line has a bit too few women on the troop, so my plan is to convert two different Cheerleaders to match the style of Naggarond Nigthmares as the positional Runner. I also found a suitable miniature for the Star Player Roxanna Darknails in the OOP 40k model for Kruellagh, The Vile.

So my plan (after painting some Snots) is to remove the jackets from the High Elf and Pro Elf cheerleader models and try to add shoulder guards from models in a DE blister. I'll also need suitable women catching hands for these models, and I am not sure in which way to go here yet. I think I'll have to get introduced to green stuff modeling here as well, because of the jackets having so large part in the original sculpts. For the Kruellagh model I think I'll just try to strip the flame thrower nozzles and gas tubing and maybe add the forehead emblem from a blitzer model as diadem. I think a wrist mounted blade will look awesome to, but aint decided yet.

I normally don't field any runners, but chose to go for two models anyway. In that way I'll have positionals for most Elf team setups. The style I've altered the models will fit a darker themed Wood elves team just as good, and I think the high helmets will do enough for a High Elf proxy, but more about that when I've done some work on the Ogres team. I also had an idea of conversion of the old Star Player Tuorn to fit the current Assassin positional player. So there are lot's of loose scetches in my mind right now. I'll have to try to focus at the tasks one at a time.

Nice little conversions you're doing on all the tiny snotling figures. Do the kickers have mouth guards, or just a slice of orange in front of their teeth?
Hope to see some painting on them soon, eh?

    Thanks!

No mouth guards, no. It's amazing what the flash of my camera brings out. I was actually very thorough while stripping paint. I'm not worried much about detail though.

Will see how much time I can spend painting this weekend. With a bit of luck I have enough time to prepare them for primer tonight. I'm also waiting for a pogo player which I intend to paint in the same color scheme (also skin wise), so I hope to get that before starting.

    Re: Just another BBLog

I received my (mint) Pogo Player yesterday. It was in fact in so good condition as to make me suspicious of authenticity. I had to work quite a lot to properly separate the soles of the goblin from the step of the pogo stick, otherwise the mini was in really good condition.

Therefore I made time to go through the snotlings one last time along with the mini for Star Player Grotty. All Goblin minis are now primed and ready for some paint. If I can produce some time tomorrow I'll start painting really soon...

    Re: Just another BBLog

I tried some colors today. Verdict says I'll go with Catchan Green for base coat, dry brush with Snot Green, highlight with Goblin Green and then wash with Devlan Mud. I also tried Warlock Purple, which I don't like to work with at all. I need to practice my technique on that color as it gets very runny when I add even the tiniest bit of water, and is very stick if I don't..

Picture shows base coat and some dry brushing (where the size allowed for it), will probably try to do some more before highligths. I also noticed some sloppy painting with the help of the flash on my camera, so some retouch as well.

Please keep in mind that this is the first thing I do in 6 years (except for touchups), and even then I only did one team.

I'm not happy with the spikes, so going to complete my paint collection with some more bonelike colors for a bone/horn look'n'feel. I think besides the slow process of relearning, that this will probably take quite a while. The snots' are incredibly tiny!

    Re: Just another BBLog

I made a stab at finishing the first 4 Snotlings, and this is how they came out.

In the end I decided to wash with Devlan Mud all over. They are connon fodder, and there is now way to know how they will land. I think it is Ok result, given that I'm a bit rusty. I hope to improve lots before this is over.

This is how I did. Black primer, then base coat. Both skin and spikes where dry brushed in 3 shades. Eyes are two shades red, but it is hard to trace after dry brushing the eyebrows. Some highlights or inverse highlights on guards and shoes. Lastly, quite some Devlan Mud, not fully dried in the photo.

Any ideas on where I should focus to improve are most welcome. With these kind of small minis I think my brush control will have to go up before I attempt any fine defined highlights.

Thanks! I did shade the loin cloths a bit before washing, but it's mostly the wash you see.

I think one of the reason one is fooled by the size of these minis is the original smaller slotta bases I was lucky enough to get hold of.

Compare with the regular size base in the attached image. On a regular size base it would look really tiny, and these are the "large" blood bowl snotlings. I think it would be incredibly painstaking to paint the even smaller minis that were released prior to these.

    Re: Just another BBLog

I've worked out a scheme where I can finish 2 minis at a time whenever i have a (somewhat) late evening off.

Skin base coat and 3 layers of drybrush after eyes and mouth.

Clothes and armor with slight shading.

Spikes and nobs in 3 layers (dry brushed).

Heavy wash in devlan mud, relit eyes and touched up tongue.

..and oh, I decided to make my nut kicker (converted from toe stomper also in the picture) into team captain. To represent this honor he got a skull coming out of the pitch beneath him.

This is my progress so far:

Did I forget to mention how small they are in this post..?

It's amazing how fast my precision has developed, I had to do a lot less touchups today.

All comments, feedback or critique are most welcome!

Nice snotlings man. I also see now that it's the kickers' (or stompers') upper lip and their moth is closed, haha!
It's going to be an old-school, characterful little team when they're all finished.
