    Enfid's Ex Illis painting log

While waiting for a couple of things for 40K and Fantasy as of typing, I decided to dive into Ex Illis! I already have a few units completed, and I'll present more when they are done. I'm planning something BIG later on, so stay tuned...

    My first unit, the Arbalestiers.

Sample miniature for Knight Hospitaller (which are actually Franc Chevalers)

Sample miniature for Hobelars, the light cavalry.

The Soffrances, which has been slightly converted. I gave them a winter-y theme, and named them 'Famine'

    Continued:

Here are the first non-starter units, the Serjant Spearmen, which are proper infantry units back in the medieval era. Getting all those checkerboard pattern done was a pain in the rear.

And the latest addition, a hero! I went for a minimalistic design for the Marrenne. I especially concentrated on the face, and tried to give her a young, naive look. I liked how it turned out.

Very nice indeed. I'm a big fan of the Ex illis minis.

Any chance for some size comparisons with GW" minis?

I didn't know any of those minis. Are they plastic? It seems so.

    Thanks guys!

Here's a size comparison to a GW Fire Warrior and a Space Marine Sergeant.

And yes, all of these are in plastics.

    Here are some upcoming units:

Re: Enfid's Ex Illis painting log

After some time spent thinking, I have came up with a symbol for my army:

...And then several days later, I realise I'm not a big fan of this symbol, so I tried something else. It's something of a personal symbol of mine, but also Celtic-looking enough to fit the universe.

With that, I applied it to the mangonel (a small catapult used for direct fire than lobbing) and also finished the engine itself and the crews.

Very nice miniatures, and I'm not talking about the paint job only. From time to time it's nice to see something else than Warhammer that is also NOT steampunk. Great thread.

    Thanks for the interest guys!

Anyway, I got a sample swordsman painted up. I collected all the Mongolian miniatures from the Serjants sprues and made them into 'Mongolian Swordsmen' unit. I painted him in a brownish-neutral colour in case I want to include this unit in another army. A mercenary unit, pretty much.

Looking sweet. The highlights are a bit too pronounced for my liking on the Serjant though.

Have to cut some corners to get these guys on the table some day.

And here's the 'Mongolian' unit done!

I'll try to finish the cavalry units before I go on to do any new units.

Cool miniatures and great painting. Maybe you can give a little run down of what Ex Illis? I don't think too many of us have heard of it, at least I haven't.

Re: Enfid's Ex Illis painting log

Read more about it here for what Ex Illis is.

I'll let you read the background yourself, but gameplay-wise, Ex Illis does things differently from other wargames in that it uses a computer (or iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad) to oversee the battle. It does take a while to get used to, but play it just like a wargame and remember how each unit work in the most general term and you'll do fine. My favourite advantage in using a computer is when a boat load of modifiers are involved in a fight. For example, a unit of longbowmen firing at a unit in a grid (the game is grid-based) that involves an already ongoing fight will calculate:

    - Its own accuracy in hitting the intended unit
    - Any obstacles in the way and/or the cover in that zone
    - The bulk of the units in the fight (i.e. the larger the combatant, the more likely it’s going to be hit ‘by accident’.)
    - And other factors (buffs, debuff, how motivated the unit is, how tired the unit is, etc.)

So instead of basing all that with a D6 system, the rule practically runs on a flexible D100 system depending on individual cases. This part is what I'm most impressed with.

The general advantage of the game is that it’s really easy to play, and one can mostly play using intuition rather than micro-managing things on the board. This means it’s incredibly easy to introduce new people (wargamers or not) to the game. The system is incredibly complex though, and it’s always recommended that one reads the articles on the official wiki to learn how the rules work. As I said, the computer acts as the ever-seeing judge who keep tracks of statuses, but also run the game so there is no hiccup when you aren’t sure how the rule work in an obscure situation.

The software is available for free on the website, and you can register for free and have a trial period where you can try the game out. You can also try out new units as they come out by using them on a trial period as well, and, ofcourse, proxy the miniatures just like in any other games.

If you have any more questions please PM me, as I don't want this blog to turn into a Q&A.

Now with that done, here's the fast cavalry unit done! I personally really like the dynamic look the whole group gives, despite them having somewhat the same pose.

This one in particular I tried to imitate a blue roan mark, though I'm not sure how it came out. It looked horrifying at first, but it looks ok now....I think.

Looks good! Shame that they're really the same model over and over again.

After playing War of the Ring, it's not too bad. As a matter of fact, it makes me plan the painting better since I can just place the highlights in the same places.

Now I finally have a leader of the army!

    Here's Judikael O Cuinn!

Nice work Enfid. I really like the symbol you chose in the end.

Sorry to be a pain but in the last photo of Judikael you can see a small bit of blue ink or paint on the horses front foot/hoof.

    Keep up the good work!

Re: Enfid's Ex Illis painting log

Great looking units. I have had Ex-illis on my mind since I saw the big super Demon, but this is the first time I have seen any painted up.

Its a shame they are so big though... I really do prefer Fantasy in 28mm over 32mm scale. 32 is fine for tall people, but I would prefer my French and Mongols to be shorter (26-28mm).
