Doomrider, however - "Doomrider is a Daemon Prince of Slaanesh. Mounted on a daemonically possessed bike adorned with deadly blades and spikes and wielding his cruel daemonic sword, he carves a bloody swathe across the battlefield as he mercilessly hunts his prey. He can be summoned by Chaos Cultists in foul rituals to aid the forces of Chaos in battle, however he is highly unpredictable in nature and seldom stays in the material universe for very long, often returning to the warp as suddenly as he appears." - from wh40k lexicanum
If it's harder than "Rules for Wargaming" by Arthur Taylor, then it's too complicated.

We had four in 2nd edition, Doombreed was one of them (+ N'kari, M'Kachan and Foulspawn). But my bet is on M'kar, the punching bag of the heroes of the Imperium...

That's not "never," but it's surely unusual.

From what I have heard Longtime Chaos players will be disappointed slightly but not rules wise. The fluff may have CSM looking like the whipping boys of Ultramarines and another loyal chapter ( couldn't get source to name). Also there will be a very odd retcon (Tyranids losing warp travel odd) and CSM all being almost berserker mad (Charging headlong into bolter fire for no reason). All in all Fluff bunnies would be even more disappointed with this dex. Take with grain of salt as I' not a rumor monger, and My source contacted me out of nowhere and started off by saying he would not discuss rules, it all seemed a lil pre planned talking pointish. He did see really upset by the fluff though...

I'd hope so, I've been hoping for great fluff, followed by rules to make my Nightlords more that Black legion with cool hats. I'm glad nobody else has heard this, as I was quite saddened by it. BRING ON THE CHAOS DRAGON!

Out of those characters, only Honsou would be "new" to 40k (in terms of rules, that is). I'd be willing to bet that there will be more characters than in the current book, but none of them will be characters that were never seen before.

That reminds me, need to go buy the NL conversion bits before they get the Finecast treatment and the price doubles.

I'd say -some- extra special characters is very likely: not since 2004/2005 has there been an army book/codex that hasn't featured either some new ones or at least old ones returning that weren't in the previous book.

Well codex writer is, according to rumours, Phil Kelly so I can´t see that happening. However if rumour about Matt Ward helping out is true, I would be really scared.

I smell Mat Ward hate coming up on the horizon. - As far as I know all of the design team more or less "help out" with all books. There is a main author, but he does not write the book all on his own. correct me if I'm wrong.

    Re: Codex: Chaos Legions rumours

The rumour divide re no new special characters vs 5 new seems important.

If the mechanism to "unlock" any legion special rules is subsumed into a special (please all that is unholy, make this not so), then surely all legions must be represented???

If there are no new ones, this could mean that any ic may be able to buy "night lords" or somesuch.
Possibly even every appropriate unit, having option for "night lords" at "x" cost and night lords being described elsewhere. In that way, you could actually mix legion troops into a black legion style warband ...

Hmmm, I started off hoping to narrow down possibilities and have gone all chaossy.
RAW! RAW and be damned! (then house rule... )

I do not hate Matt Ward, I quite like his work, except some extravagances in fluff.

I would like to ask if there was any codex since start of 5th that did not added special characters?
Also we know that The Dark General gets info from early development, but I would like to ask him, if he has some new info on this.

I will be very surprised if this is the case. Abaddon is one of the oldest special character figures, and he has not aged well relative to current Chaos Terminators.

It's possible the Talon, sword and ponytail will be included in the Terminator box.

That way, Abaddon gets a makeover, while the statement of no new model for him still remains true.

    Re: Codex: Chaos Legions rumours

If there is no new Abbadon model I will eat my hat! After I've been a brought one!

Now I'd be more willing to believe that the model will be a revamp of the current one, with a more dynamic pose and bulked up slightly so he looks like the "big evil" of the galaxy that he is supposed to be.

The question of characters is an interesting one.

With the starter box all but confirmed as Dark Angels vs Chaos I would be shocked if Cypher doesn't make a return. As an extention of that I would expect to see rules for fielding units of "Fallen", possibly as an option Cypher gives you in the same way that you can take "enhanced warriors" by taking Fabius. (note I have no rumours that this is the case however I wouldn't discount it as a possibility).

The issue of characters for the legions which don't have them at the moment is more complex. The Word Bearers have an obvious character in Erebus. However the Iron Warriors, Alpha Legion and Night Lords don't have that. You could have Honsou for the Iron Warriors, however the real fluff fans won't like this as he is from Imperial Fists genestock and something of a renegade from his legion.

My gut feeling is that the nature of any new characters we see will depend heavily on whether or not GW go all out Legions for this codex or whether the choke it again. All out legions and you will see new characters created or stolen from the HH books (ala Erebus). Choke it and I don't know what we'll get but alot of people will be unhappy anyway so it'll probably get lost in the storm of outrage!

    Re: Codex: Chaos Legions rumours

There was a rumour that all the cults would be getting plastic convertion kits, possibly as one box. I would expect this to be in the second wave of any release though and wouldn't be shocked if it was in finecast rather than plastic. I'm expecting/hoping to see the old Iron Warriors and Night Lords conversion kits move in finecast at around the same time.

I would be beyond dismayed if this played out.

This isnt like the Necrons, that had a very simplistic background in their previous book, or DE that had next to nothing to go on as well.

Its Chaos Space Marines. You have a running series (Horus Heresy), thats pumping out best seller after best seller right now, you have 20 odd years of previous background material outside of those books, you have thematic (intentional) ties to fiction beyond even that (Moorcock) and GW is willing to just throw it all away, that which has MADE this game??

I cant see it, unless its simply not what we hope/expect the Codex to be (Chaos SM LEGIONS) and instead Chaos Hordes, with the focus on Daemon Worlds, Daemon Engines, Cultists/Traitors, and supported by CSM. At that point, its no longer the army we all have had for years, with its fallen angels/christian war in heaven theme, and is instead...something new.
