Thread: The background that annoys you most

Re: The background that annoys you most

I like the idea of Wurzag (I hate Grimgor for the reasons mentioned above) but a certain element of his background always annoyed me. It was like someone in the GW studio was chuckling to himself going "hur hur hur 'git' is a funny word" and was determined to use it regardless of context. At least where the Hobgoblin Sneaky Gits were concerned it made a kind of sense.

The wood thing was just an half assed excuse to find a unique look for their warmachines. Stone is a ridiculous building material for a machine dealing with moving parts and high stress loads like a catapult or bolt thrower. It does look unique though.

Dwarves have had no problem whatsoever with wood for most of the history of the game. Until some designer lost touch with reality and decided every army needs an absolutely unique look.

Well, they seem to have changed their mind on that again, at any rate. Now every army must have large war machines, monstrous cavalry, multiple "centrepieces" (an oxymoron, I feel, but whatever), and so on...

Well that's from 6th ed, it was a good edition, but they removed half the fluff from most AB, it's a miracle they came up with Wuurzag then, really.
No, I didn't. I had the 6th edition AB. I tried to get every AB to 'know my opponents' but it got a little expensive going in to 7th and 8th. I didn't really consider doing so before 6th tbh. That's my problem, unless you have the OnG book you only get Orc's from the point of view as 'the enemy' in fluff, never the other way around. I'd like to read a little more about Rotgut etc... but it seems unlikely now, particularly as it's going to be a long while until OnG in 9th. My point with this is that GW writers have developed Orcs to a point where their characters are monotonous and a little boring. I'd like to see them develop beyond the 'smash humie' mindset (or revert back to pre-6th as you OnG players used to enjoy).
Awake O Dead, for there can be no rest for ye beneath the earth. Let the splintered bones burrow from the grave pall. Let cold fingers grip time-worn blades, and unseeing eyes survey the fields of slaughter. For your time has come once more. And the dead shall walk.

Yep, and my point was that Grimgor is the culmination of this back-pedaling. But you can read about Gorfang and co alright, just google their names

Gorfang Rotgut was awesome. I love the bit where he captured Kazador's son.

GrimBore is the most dull and unimaginative excuse for a character ever. Thats without even comparing him to the excellent O&G characters of 4th Ed Gorfang, Morglum, Azhag, Grom, Skarsnik, Olgok...

I always wondered what happened to Morglum after his epic win at Death Pass. So far as we know he is still alive somewhere.

He has a truce with Skarsnik, iirc. He basically rules east of the Death Pass, and Skarsnik rules west.

    That's Gorfang Rotgut

Morglum went on to besiege Karak Azul (together with Gorfang, who subsequently got all the glory for it).

Before they retconned the storm Grimgor was actually one of few greenskin characters with character development. He starts of as a warrior thinking himself the best, is challenged and loses* a fight which makes him feel a need to prove himself, he treks an extreme length in his personal vendetta having other greenskins die of exhaustion under his single minded pursuit until he himself grows weary, he then starts to feel doubt but the gods speak to him and with his new religious fervor he renews his efforts and defeats Archaon, having proven himself he feels no need to finish the job, shouts "Grimgor iz da Best!" and walks of into the sunset.
Well now they retconned him back to just a warrior thinking himself the best ignoring everything that comes after which makes him dull again.

*Questionable but he himself saw it like that.

For a while, the White Dwarf narrative campaign of 1994-95 (WDs c.178-186) was treated as canonical. Morglum first attacked the Empire with a small army but his army was destroyed by Kurt Helborg (The Gauntlet of Fear, WD178). He returned in 2506, and with his Chaos Dwarf allies he routed an Imperial army (with Wood Elf allies) led by Karl-Franz in Averland (the Gathering of Might, WD181)). Following that victory the horde splintered and set off in different directions. One portion was turned back at a river crossing, while the Chaos Dwarfs were ambushed in the mountains. Morglum's (now smaller) army was confronted outside Talabheim and defeated. (WDs 183, 186).

Since then nothing has been heard from him, although an article in WD208 indicated he had survived the Battle of Talabheim and was plotting revenge.

Yeh I have read all those battles, though I did not realise that the studio campaign was ever considered to be canon.

If so it was a sad and painful time in Morglum's career when he got posessed by the mind of Gav Thorpe (worst warhammer player in the studio).

yeah I know it's like that for Gorfang, but I seemed to remember there's was a similar deal with Morglum (and when I said east, I meant eaaaaaaast, in the Dark Lands, out of the World Edge Mountains). Seems I'm mistaken though.

Pretty sure they're metal, not stone.

No matter how the outnumbered the giants were, they lived in fortresses on mountains, had cannons, and were even physically stronger than Ogres. Nevertheless the Ogres win. How? Shouldn't be possible... We actually even had an argument with a few friends about this, and the final mental picture everyone had was of a horde of fat midgets about the height of our knees pouring in through doors and windows, stabbing us (the "sky giants") to death with small needles... Can you see this happening in any setting? I didn't think so either, but what can you do about it...

The Whole Grimgor head butting Archaon was really anoying but I suppose they couldn't have Chaos win could they it would be the end of the Warhammer narative. In fact there is a lot I don't like about the Fantasy background but 40ks background still intrests me the main problem being how quickly Horus spat his dummy out it all feels a bit easy and reushed but thats just my opinion.
