The Migration Patterns of the Ogre

    Dear Sir
For your review in to its usefulness I have obtain a copy of the Migration Patterns of the Ogre by Divard Attenbouch in the hope that it will help in your endeavour to gather as much fact on the invading Ogre tribe your State is suffering. I have taken the liberty to try and (as it were) ‘trim the fat’ of where the author has diverted down a path that does in no way educate in the Ogre culture but instead (I believe) exaggerates the heroic exploits of the cowardly ‘expert’. Fortunately this has made the many page epic in to an easy read of an evening with a glass of your favourite wine.

    Yours in Service
    Josef Hacken

Extracts from The Observations and Estimations of the Migration Patterns of the Obernoid Beast Known as the Ogre, as documented by Divard Attenbouch; primary wild animal expert of His Royal Highness’s Great Imperial Zoo located at Altdorf.

Extract for your review - Introduction by Divard Attenbouch; primary wild animal expert of His Royal Highness’s Great Imperial Zoo located at Altdorf. (The 17 page long winded section of the self congratulating and plainly egotistical Divard excising his many exaggerated virtues has been edited down to this introduction). - Josef

…And that the humble, yet beastly Ogre or as I call them in scientific circles Obernoid (Ober for large and noid for the distinction of being bipedal) not be feared due to your new understanding of them through reading this book.
Therefore it is my plan then to following the ogre tribe known as the ‘Other End’ that has ventured to the realm of the Border Princes from the far east, that I will be able to observe the preferred locations visited by the Ogre, what draws them to the places they ransack and activates they partake that makes them stay or leave in certain vicinities.
And so on behalf of most importantly me and the little help of my few remaining follows it is my pleasure and privilege to present…

Re: The Migration Patterns of the Ogre

    Hi All

If you managed to make it through the introduction, then well done and welcome to my little Gnoblog of my *third attempt to build and paint an Ogre army. This plog will probably serve to showcase the models I paint and any mad writings that come to mind during the hellish hours between 9am and 5pm (work).

First off the ever popular list of things I’ve got and the stage they are in, followed by the every so typical first finished model or two.

What I have so far (Updated 19/01/2011):
7 x Ogre Bulls – built, undercoated, 3 painted and based.
    6 x Ironguts – built.
    4 x Leadblasters – built.
    3 x Imperial Maneaters – built.
    Assorted Gnoblars – 10 built.
    2 x Butchers/slaughtermasters – built, coverted plastic under coated.
    1 x Bruiser – coverted plastic, built.
    1 x Hunter – Plastic, built.
    1 x Stonehorn – Built.

The plan is to paint around three ogres a week minimum using a simple paint scheme of flesh coloured skin, rust effect metals and purple bloomers (trousers). Next purchase is to get some sabertusks (suggestions on cheap alternatives welcome).

So to finish off some painted ogres...

So thanks in advance to your replies.
    Fitzbaron

*1st Attempt resulted in me swapping the initial purchase for a shed full of slayers (Slayer Armies rule). Second attempt ended in the box of bulls being used for conversions (Chaos Daemon Princes for 40k) and the Butcher disappearing to the big box of unopened GW stuff.

Re: The Migration Patterns of the Ogre

Extract for your review – The Average Ogre (I have removed most of the sections without fact, the first relating to Divard’s deep examination of Ogre droppings resulting in the drowning of a follower. And some of the section of how Divard selflessly compares his own height to that of an Ogre, this to my knowledge again resulted in the death of a handgunner bodyguard coincidently of around the same high as the author.) - Josef

    The Average Ogre

Ogres are big, violent, and have a fiendish reputation to eat anything that moves (and failing that anything that does not move). Your average ogre stands at over 7 feet tall and as wide as two horses.

A drawing of a typical Ogre

Commonly they wear the following; iron shod boots, pantaloons, iron plate covering guts,lLeather belt, assorted iron/ stone/leather jewellery. Some have also been spotted wearing a large iron spiked glove. For weapons they carry either a large stone/wooden club, or sword, some carry two.

A drawing of the author and Ogres for size comparison

As you can see in the above drawing above I managed to infiltrate the Ogre camp using skills from my time as a scout in the Emperors service and you can clearly see that the ogres behind me are much larger then my ample, sturdy, strong self.

    Thanks Confessor_Atol.

In reply to both, trying to make the log a bit different to keep myself motivated. Tried the old paint a bit post it, WIP that, post that, but never kept them going as I got bored with them. This way I can make myself look forward to writing a bit more of the 'Book', which adds to the histroy of the army, and pushes me to paint more so I can add a new extract.

Next up will be more core ogres finished and a wip of the maneaters including a 'hello sailor' type (say no more), and more writings from your favourate Ogre Expert Divard Attenbouch.

The in-character writings are what makes this log special and flavourful. They remind me both of the abridged version of The Princess Bride and the Caiphas Cain novels (it's the supremely snarky annotations that do it). Nice painting, too.

Thanks Lilloser2010, I to am hoping to read more from Divard. I wonder what usefull info will be coming next.

    On to the updates...

Completed, two more Bulls and a Bull Bellower(now used as avatar).

    and a group shot.

Painting in Progress, Bull Standard Bearer, Crusher

IPhone decided that it prefered the ogres in the background.

Work in Progress, 3 x maneaters with dual ogre pistols. (going for an empire feel)

(not sure on the last one, was going for dwarf handguns and shields but ended up looking a bit... hum... Could be the steel helmet under the hat).

So a question for you out there. Do you think the maneaters need anything else??? Answers on a post card, though probably better in you just use the reply button.

Any way got to go find Josef Hacker and see if he has anything else for you to read.

Great plog, the presentation is extremely entertaining and your pictures are great.

Concerning your questions, I agree that the third maneater looks a bit funny but very generally I feel they look a bit too much like standard bulls. It may help to add some more stuff or even sculpt details such as capes or leather boots that would differentiate them from the rest.

Re: The Migration Patterns of the Ogre

I concur. Maneaters are supposed to have gone out into the world and learned new customs from other people. Slap on a shirt or waistcoat, wear an Empire shield as a gutplate, give them normal boots instead of the pointy shoes. The hats are a bit small, too, a bigger GS'd version would look more appropriate (together with the massively flamboyant feather).

    Great stuff!

I actually quite like the last fella with the little hat, it looks a little comical and in my opinion should stay but perhaps with a greenstuff supporting-strap around his chin .

Re: The Migration Patterns of the Ogre

    Hi All

Quick update today with a strange looking ogre.........

Thanks for the replys; Duke Donald, Hideous Loon, and Demortu. Regarding the maneaters, I agree still look to much like the normal plastic ogre. Do like the idea of waistcoats and doing something with the boots. Time to improve my greenstuffing skill (any tips on waist coats). @Demortu, the guy with the little cap has grown on me a bit, migh take you up the suggestion of the strap.

Update on the progress of the Ogres this week - Zero, Nil, Nada, nothing. Reason being I was so burnt out with work I though I paint something to cheer me up, SKULLTAKER!!!

I got Skulltaker back when daemons of chaos were first released as a solo army post Storm of Chaos and I got him with the fantasy splash release box. One thing I found surprising after painting lots of plastic and some finecast(or what every the community is calling it) was the weight of the model. Good fun to paint.

    Thanks for looking, C&C Welcome.

Re: The Migration Patterns of the Ogre

    Good day to you all

Been a while since I made any progress on my Ogres. Work, family, Mass Effect 3 having all gotten in the way "Damn them all". Then it happened, Sunday morning UK time, counting down the hours till WESTLEMAINA, the son in his room playing, the wife relaxing on the sofa and Commander Sheppard a distant memory (went with the red ending). When an urge sprung out of nowhere.
"I must paint something", I mumbled to the heavens. So I grabbed the Stonehorn from my shelf that had patiently collected dust since around New Year when it came in to existence from a pile of plastic frames. Selected 'Police Academy' on LoveFilm, and proceeded to drybrush the hairy monstrosity within an inch of its mold injected form.
Before I knew it 'the beast was done'.
And lowe I present to you the finished article.

and a close up on the rider...

and a (not so great) shot of the finished stuff, including a giant in the back ground I painted a few years ago for my O&Gs.

Thanks for stopping by. C & C Welcome.
    Tom
