    A HeroQuest painting log

I recently picked up a used copy of the Swedish edition of HeroQuest on eBay - opening up the box really brought back some memories!

The game was in good condition overall and only one closed door was missing. Some of the miniatures were painted however (not very well I'm afraid), so I decided to spray the whole lot white in an attempt to paint the contents myself.

Just note that this will be a rather slow log since I have a son (aged 4 months) that demands most of my attention! Maybe it'll all be painted by the time I can play it with him...

"HeroQuest - spännande äventyr i en magisk värld" (HeroQuest - exciting adventures in a magical world) was the Swedish title for this great game when it came out back in 1990.

    The miniatures included:

    The Heroes:

    1 Wizard - Finished
    1 Barbarian - Finished
    1 Dwarf - Finished
    1 Elf - Finished

    The Monsters:

    8 Orcs - Finished
    6 Goblins - Finished
    3 Fimir - Finished
    4 Chaos Warriors - Finished
    1 Chaos Warlock - Finished
    1 Gargoyle - Finished
    4 Skeletons - Finished
    2 Zombies - Finished
    2 Mummies - Finished

I'll start with something easy - the Skeletons! I wonder how it will feel to paint some fantasy miniatures again after ten years of 40K painting...

I'm excited to see what you come up with! Hopefully the original paint plus new white basecoat didn't obscure too much of the detail. If so you might look into removing the paint first and starting from scratch.

It was a truly great game.

Great find! If you lived in Australia I could of send you a spare door. I've got like 4 complete Hero Quests and a crapload of spare bits. Would really to find Advanced Hero Quest!

Good point! I'll see if I can remove some of the paint before I start. Luckily most of the models were only partially painted (like a weapon or some other detail), so I won't need to strip that many.

Excited to see what you come up with! Her Quest is an awesome game, with some fun, if slightly old-school models! I never managed to paint my copy, so I'll look forward to what you produce.

    BTW. Paint the Fimir NOW!

Ah, yes the Fimir! Anyone got suggestions on the colour on these guys? I always imagined them as being a pale green (I'm thinking GW's Camo Green would be suitable).

I've been painting Heroquest as well. If you check out the Tale of Board Game Painters threads in the Group Project Logs Section you can see my take on Fimir, amongst other things. I did a basecoat of Knarloc Green, a heavy wash of Devlan Mud, and then a drybrush of Rotting Flesh.

Here's a link, if you're interested (featuring free Mummy!)

I couldn't find my copy anywhere so just picked up one on ebay. Some of the models are "undercoated" in enamel and others sprayed red. Once I figure out how to safely strip them I'll be painting mine up too

I'll add my $.02 and also say that I'm looking forward to seeing this log go forward. I've got my own copy waiting to be painted up, one of many unfinished projects. Will you be painting up the terrain as well?

    £3? That's a real bargain!

Nice to see some more HeroQuest miniatures painted up!

The terrain? I would like to, but that will have to wait until the miniatures are done.

Thanks for all the encouragement guys! I'm feeling a bit of pressure now...

I've started working on the undead critters, and I will be updating my progress in the first post. Sofar I have removed flash on the skeletons, zombies and mummies.

    Re: A HeroQuest painting log

Yesterday I managed to slap some basecoats onto the undead creatures. Rotting flesh for the Zombies (seems appropriate enough), Calthan brown for the skeletons and Khemri brown for the mummies (very fitting!).

I've also put 1 Fimir, 1 Chaos warrior, the Warlock and the four heroes in a "bath" in order to strip them of paint. It seems to be coming off great sofar.

It is what we in Sweden call Rödsprit or T-röd, basically denatured alcohol. It works well when removing paint from plastic miniatures.

    Brilliant!

I love HQ, it really was the game that got me into all this.

I was at a carboot sale last summer and picked up a mint copy for £2! I couldnt believe it, nothing painted and even the box was perfect. It had been in someones loft for 20 years!

That's a massive bargain right there! I can tell you that this copy weren't anywere as cheap...(though I guess the Swedish edition must have had a far, far smaller amount of units produced than the English one).

    Thanks for the encouragement!

Today I bring you a picture of the finished skeletons (haven't decided on the bases yet though):

A run-down of the colours used on the bodies (do skeletons have bodies?):

    Basecoat: Calthan brown
    Drybrush: Bleached bone
    Wash: Gryphonne sepia
    Light drybrush: Bleached bone

The scythe haft is Khemri brown with a Devlan mud wash, and the blade was basecoated with Tin bitz, stippled with Boltgun metal and washed with Badab black and Devlan mud.

A WIP shot of the mummys and zombies:

And I've also basecoated the fimir (with Gretchin green):
