Green stuff and lizardmen conversion questions

    Hello modellers, painters and... terrainers?

I have a few questions i need answered.

I have a slann (oop) that want to convert, basically i want him to sit on the rock and the rock will float above the base. I have the rock, flying stand and base thats should be the easy bit.
However, he has no feet and i dont have the right hand holding the staff. For this i was going to sculpt it out of green stuff. Not used green stuff before but im fairly adept at arty stuff, to make things easier on myself i will sculpt the arm so it sits across his lap (basically like the other arm).

Am i better off making an arm-shaped blob and sticking it on and then fine sculpting it or just attach green stuff to the model and slowly sculpt it taking away small bits at a time?

Also i have a few old style saurus and cold ones going spare and though of making some saurus cav. I remember a tutorial of sorts appearing in an old WD, does anyone have a link to it?

Any tips in general on GS would also be appreciated.

All the guides I have seen have suggested "building up in layers." From my limited experience with GS, I must say I agree with them. It's difficult to remove Green Stuff from a large blob while leaving the rest of the blob the right shape.

Captain Brown showed me a link to a handy thread in response to a different question, but perhaps you'll be able to find something you like in it.

    Also, Check out http://www.greenstuffsculpting.com/2...basics-by.html
    and http://mandragoreminiatures.free.fr/...glaisfinal.pdf
for some interesting reads on working with greenstuff.

    Aye, that.

A bit of wire armature pinned into the shoulder would be the norm for the first step, to support the arm and uncured putty; but since you're resting the arm against the body you can probably forego that.
Roll a thin sausage of putty, just thinner than the thinnest part of the eventual finished arm, and stick that on the model in strategic places. (shoulder, across belly, etc.) It can help to score or rough up the places you plan to stick it. Get the overall length, proportions and pose worked out with that, and let it cure. (Underneath a desklamp will speed it up) Then, as Mr. Mushroom says, build up the layers over that. Muscle bulges and recesses, bony details like elbow and knuckles, skin texture, etc.

Take a look at these pics for similar 'putty armatures': Ebob's sausage man, and Kev Adams' wips for Otherworld Miniatures.

Free-standing fingers and toes - if that's what you're planning - might be trickier, but you should be able to do the same thing. If they droop, use wire. Pin it and pose it, then give it an initial coat of putty. See tutorial lists and some pointers at Minisculpture, particularly Hivetrygon's excellent hand tutorial. (Scroll down the first link)

For general GS tips, search for 'greenstuff' by author 'Verm1s'.

I know the saurus tutorial you're talking about, too. (I remember someone proposing the same for kroot) I don't have a link, but I might be able to sort something out.

FYI, both of these links go to Ebob's sausage man guide.

After I made sure to copy and paste the right links... Sorry about that. Fixed now.

Both pics are originally from the Otherworld Forum, but different threads.

Re: Green stuff and lizardmen conversion questions

Ok, so a small break for various reasons. Last night i finally broke out the greenstuff and started 'sculpting'. I started with one of the scarvets, i think it went ok. First off i removed the plastic loin cloth and tail, i then cut the legs from the inside groin so they could widen to fit around the cold ones back. I also bent the feet at the ankles which resulted in small splits.
This was my first time using GS and i am happy with the ankles and the tail is ok. The loin cloth is a bit rough so hopefully i can make it look OK with a good paint job.
I was surprised with how sticky the GS was when first mixed, i think this contributed to the rough edges on the loin cloth, when i do the next scarvet i will try to let it cure a bit before sculpting the folds in the cloth.

And the finished product, im not sure if the pictures do it justice. The ankle blends are very smooth, the loin cloth has a rough texture where i sculpted it.
