Re: The Sun of Nothing, A Dark Eldar Log

I love the log so far man, and glad you got the wyches down in the end. Liking the start of the Trueborn too. Just a quick question though... I'm painting up some Harlequins atm, and being a mediocre painter I've decided to do some freehand to 'advance' myself. How did you do your diamond patterns? Having a slight mare with mine atm, particularly with working out how they fold around bended arms/legs. Any tips since yours are spot on?

I love the color scheme, and I think the skin tones are awesome. This paint scheme captures the dark side of the Dark Eldar. I never imagined them wearing too many bright and flashy colors. Maybe a touch here and there. Also, the dark grey skin is really going back to the elf and dark elf contrast. I dig it.

Have you done any work on the Hellions or the Incubi yet? I'd love to see how you did those.

Thank you, freehand is pretty daunting when you first start, but like any painting technique (except drybrushing I guess... ) patience is key here. But other than that, I firstly get the overall shapes and patterns down by painting one row of diamonds first with a base color, this first row is key because you'll be building the entire pattern upon this row, so take time to paint it as nicely as possible, after that it's all about building upon this row until you get a nice pattern going on, once the pattern is painted. It's just doing highlighting on each individual blocks.

When you encounter folds, there're 2 ways to approach it, ignore the fold and just use the same highlighting pattern or adjust the highlighting to fit the fold. The first approach is good for keeping a consistent pattern and shading ( more emphasis on the freehand rather than the actual clothing ), while the second approach gives the clothing a more natural look ( sacrificing a bit of consistency to emphasize the clothing ) . I took the second approach.

I'm working on the Incubi right now, because I can paint their armor with some straight-forward edge highlighting and they still look amazing. Hellions wear wych suits...not smooth wych suits but spiky ones too, this...complicate things a little, the freehand thing I did on wyches probably won't work on them so I'll have to think of some other gimmicks.

Holy crap that wych squad is impressive, enough to be on the GW website or in a white dwarf.

Don't like the lord too much, obviously the paintjob isn't a problem, it's awesome, just don't like the model iself, though it certainly feels like a dark eldar lord.

Bumping for the lack of feedback...again. I guess my things just aren't that interesting.

Uninteresting? Wut? 5-stars thread and you think it's uninteresting?

Both nice painting and converting, especially glowing weapons.

I haven't popped in here in a while, so its great to see the progress. Everything seems to be shaping up nicely!

The only bit that I really don't like is the grey bases. I'd swap the grey rock colour for, the now defunct, charadon granite equivalent. The skin looks too similar the the rocks as is.

    Looking forward to the TBs.

Your trueborns look fantastic, and I really like the colour scheme you have used, what have you got next to show us?

I love btbam. One of my favorite bands. Their live show is amazing too, I don't understand how they play what they do without messing up.

Have only just spotted the log but so far I'm loving the paint jobs, the effects of the whips and the Incubi weapons are stunning, I'm totally stealing that idea for the Witchblades on my Eldar Warlocks!

hehe of course they are interesting....it would be great if you can do a detailed paint log on one figure (ie an incubi, warrior, or a wytch) so I can see how you do it so well since I have been having a hard time with my test models trying to get nice blended highlights on my armor segments like you have...my scheme is similar to yours but instead of blue I'm usng Red. Your power weapon effects are great too.

New update, yet another new light source, who would've guessed.

Have been extremely busy with school, but at least I got the Incubi done, finecast is a pain in the ass to manage and there are flaws and missing details all over the place, trying to compensate with painting isn't going to help when chunks of the model is missing. The new paints are nice, the Lahmian Medium is especially useful for making washes and psuedo-blending.
    Lots of picture.

Ya posted them on friday no? I would guess most of us scan through logs during the work week more often.

    I think they look fantastic.

Thanks, I try my best. I'm not good at taking pictures because my desk is usually a mess and I can't setup good lighting, so the pictures tend to amplify to flaws in the painting
