    Vostroyan 117th Grenadiers "Blue Bloods"

117th Vostroyan grenadiers "Blue bloods" or The start of something with alot of Furry hats

Well ive decided to have complete my army collection which already consists of a Chaos force (Iron Warriors) a Xenos army (Tau Tros`san sept hunter cadre) and now i want to be represented in all sides of the game and have decided to add an Imperial force to my collection...

    How it started

Ive always liked the Vostroyan models and i love metal minis they are just cool! So i had a little browse online and had a look at prices etc etc and i really fancied them but thought "No no i have my Tau to paint i will do it in the future sometime" so i sensibly closed down the window and went of with my day.

    Later that night

Well it was a saturday and my mate rings me and says "Fancy going out?" so i agreed... and went out on the town with some pals drank a few beers then moved onto a club and then thats where it gets a bit blurry.

Needless to say ALOT of alcohol was drunk, at about 2am the club closed and we all went home, i went online for a bit when i got back for some reason then passed out and left my laptop by the bed.

    Unforseen consequences

So i wake up and check my phone...a ton of emails are on there which i found a bit strange for a sunday morning. I had a browse through them and there were a few from ebay some from paypal and some from GW....

...To my suprise i had managed to order about 110 quids worth of Vostroyan infantry when totally hammered! To say i was suprised was and understatement. But it must have been a sign, The Vostroyans had called to me after all.

So my purchases have now arrived and i got.

    2 boxes of Firstborn infantry.
    A command squad.
A Vostroyan officer with Chainsword and Boltpistol.
    A Lascannon team
and a big batch off ebay of 23 guys mostly lasgun guys but also a flamer, a heavy bolter team and a squad leader.
5 Plasma gun vostroyans on Ebay for ten quid! boom!!

The plan is to have a grenadier regiment with all carapace armoured up vet squads some in Chimeras and some not in Chimeras, the reasons for this are...

    1. Vostroyans are well armoured and look suit being heavy infantry.
    2. I have alwaaaaaays wanted to do a heavy infantry regiment of guard after reading up about the Volpone blue bloods in gaunts ghosts.
    3. To keep the infantry count down a bit have you seen the price of vostroyans!!!!

I am taking another cue from the Volpone bluebloods and plan to do my Vostroyans in a royal blue colour similar to the French army in world war 1. I am quite excited about doing this project now and am looking forward to slowly building them up into a solid fighting force.

    The fluffy bit

The 117th Vostroyan Grenadiers, "Blue bloods are a regiment first raised on Vostroya some time in the 36th millenia to counter act the Rebellion in the star system of Vanaris prima. When the regiment was first raised it numbered around 4500 men and was part of a larger Battlegroup consisting of several other Vostroyan regiments who were all to be sent to Vanaris prima to end the Tyranic leader Mustrom the pious who had rallied several worlds in the Vanaris system to his cause.

    Blue Bloods
The regiment first attained its name because of the unusually high number of recruits drawn from noble families on vostroya. Vostroyan regiments usually consist of a mixture of all classes and backgrounds however due to a twist of fate to which the origins are unknown, the majority of the regiment seemed to be pooled from wealthy upper class families

The highborn status of many of the firstborn of the 117th meant they were quickly labelled as snobs and pompus compared to many of the other regiments more humble backgrounds and soon picked up the nickname "Bluebloods"

Despite this, they earned respect quickly from brother regiments as despite their noble upbringing the firstborn of the 117th trained as hard as any man of Vostroya.

    Battlefield Doctrine and role

While the regiment was originally not perhaps as numerous as some of the other infantry regiments they had shown a great proficiency at close quarter battle and utilising armoured transports during training.

The decision was made to use the 117th as a grenadier regiment, they would be issued with heavy carapace armour and sent into the heaviest of the fighting where their superior armour and equipment would make the difference. Large numbers of men were trained with assault weapons such as flamers and Melta weapons, tools that would be invaluable in the close quarter battles that the regiment were sure to fight as a grenadier unit.

The 117ths battlefield role was one that was meant to carry the day for the Imperial forces. While other regiments would wear the oppositon down with attrition and heavy bombardment the 117th would be the point of the spear and tear through the enemy lines with mechanised heavy infantry and tanks, opening the way for other regiments to break through and capitalise.

    History

Since the original raising of the regiment they have been re formed many times, during their orginal action in the Vanaris Prima campaign the Blue Bloods were essential in dozens of pivotal battles. Perhaps the most significant being the Battle of Hubria, a well defended settlement held by a large enemy force of infantry and dug in artillery. The Blue bloods led the charge with Chimeras and Demolisher tanks smashing through the enemy line and despite taking significant losses their heavily infantry carried the day with an inexorable advance.

To this day each raising of the regiment has come with an unusual number of highborn sons, with many noble families having notably attempted to use their connections to get their sons into such a prestigious regiment.

    ................................................

Anyway sorry for all the writing.... i will have pics up soon once i have done some test minis! For Vostroya!!

Ok so finally a test model! Took me a while to get round to painting him as ive been focused on my Tau recently but there are 60 vostroyans sitting on my desk waiting to have paint applied to them.

Any thoughts on the colour scheme guys?? im not entirely sure on how to highlight the brown on the weapon either, do i use a yellow or just a lighter brown? Hope you guys like him.

Rogerio- the vostroyan looks great, and the scheme is good too; and for the wood grain use a lighter brown and try and create a wood grain type thing.

Re: Vostroyan 117th Grenadiers "Blue Bloods"

Love the story on how you got them! Fantastic.

I am also liking the test model. Perhaps a bit more gold to break up the silver? I think he has skulls on his cuffs...maybe put them in gold? As far as wood grain, I kept it off mine for a few reasons. Some other Vossie players I know tend to use graveyard earth for the wood grain.

Looking at a high number of unpainted models is quite daunting, I know. I tend to work on a squad, keep another on the table and then hide the rest until needed. I also like doing group/army shots often because seeing from picture to picture how the army expands is what kept me going.

Thanks guys, and btw LOTE your awesome Vostroyan army was a huge inspiration behind me starting my own Vostroyans! excellent they are.

Part of the reason for not so much gold on the model was my actual lack of paint but now i have some more!! so the boys have been getting under coated today and then i shall start cracking with 1st squad ASAP! its tough though because i only need to finish 4 more battlesuits to have my 1500 point Tau list 100% painted (Plus a few other squads and vehicles who have been painted anyway without my list in mind!

    More vostroyans! Emperor be praised!
I like your colorscheame but I agree with LOTE. You need to break up the metal and blue a bit. I would paint the gloves in a different color like gold or something. Stay motivated! I would love to see an entire army of blue vostroyans

Re: Vostroyan 117th Grenadiers "Blue Bloods"

Well well, ive finally gotten round to actually getting started with my Vostroyans (My Battlesuits wont just paint themselves now) i have a 500 point combat patrol tournie coming up in about 2 weeks time and wanted to get my list all painted up in time as it gives me a good incentive to get the core of my force done.

In the list i have 3 vet squads all in chimeras one squad with plasma and the others with flamers and meltas, pretty standard fare for a combat patrol. Well so far ive managed to get through a fair few models and have 7 vets done in first squad which is my melta unit and i have almost finished their Chimera as well.

the progress is relatively slow as there alot of stages to each infantryman and they take alot of individual attention.

Ok anyway here are the first squad (almost complete)

The thing im thinking of adding to these guys is squad markings but im not entirely sure where to put them, a possibility for me was the armoured shoulder pads that they have.

Heres the Chimera its still a WIP as i wasnt really sure how to paint it really, ive gone for quite a simple scheme and am just in the progress of highlighting it.

Ive dryburshed the whole thing lightly with boltgun metal to bring out all the details like the nuts and bolts and little mechanical bits. Ive gone for some extreme highlighting with Ice blue on the upper parts of the tank much in the same way as the infantry.

And finally a group shot of the squad piling out of the back door and moving out !

Any thoughts guys? hope you like!

Like the look of them. I really like them, the only criticism I can give is the highlight (blue) seems a bit extreme and personally I would mix in just a tint of regal blue to bring it back a bit, but its all about personal reference .
How big do you plan to make this army?

Thanks for the comments guys much appreciated.

@ Servant of the Emperor, i see what your saying about the highlights its not always to everyones taste but like extreme highlights as it really seems to stand out on the model when its on the table, my Tau are much the same with red and black armour and a bright orange highlight. Size wise i already have 1500 points worth of stuff but its going to take time, im just aiming at my 500 point list painted for now.

Re: Vostroyan 117th Grenadiers "Blue Bloods"

Ok ok very small update time, but my squad has gone from 7 strong to 10! and the Chimera is also finished so i now have one troops choice ready for my army It has taken quite a long time paint a single unit and hopefully the work ive put into the squad is worth it!

    Ok so heres the infantry.

Close up of an infantry guy, lighting isnt great sorry guys.

    Back view.

And then one final little bit of work on the Chimera was to add the squad marking, V-1! 1st squad of 1st company so alot of expectation on these moustashioed chaps.

Anyway i have a tournament warm up tomorrow night 500 points and 1/3 rd of my force is ready, i still need to build 2 chimeras !!! ill post a a little game update tomorrow afterwards!

In the age of Grey Knight and Space Wolf blogs it is refreshing to see a good old Vostroyan thread. Less my own, I've not seen Vostroyans for quite some time now, and yours are particularly nice too! Bring me more updates!

Re: Vostroyan 117th Grenadiers "Blue Bloods"

    Rogerio,

So you have moved into Guard now, just remember that painting a Guard army is a marathon and not a sprint.

Nice scheme and painting on the infantry squads, very good colour scheme that works well with the bases and the hats separated by the blue and brown. Makes them look almost Napoleonic.

One suggestion for the tanks is to perhaps dry brush first as the extreme edge highlight you have used sort of looks a little 'rough'. I would use a very light dry brush of a blend of your base colour and highlight colour to try and reduce the rippled edging you have on the tanks.

    Keep up the painting war,
