    Mordheim dark ages

Im using mordheim rules to make a dark age version.
With all these nifty plastic dark age models out i thought id make a go at it.

What ive done is that ive increased the number of Champions in the warband.

Instead of henchmen you now get Peasants.

Youll have to ask me for the current version of the rules.

I need help with something though...

At the moment I have Four Ranged Weapons.

    Sling

Javelin(8", S as user, Ignores long range and movement)

    Bow

    Long Bow(but rare)

Crossbow(only available for norman peasants really)

Also, except for the welsh faction, the javelin is the only ranged weapon most factions champions can use.

Ranged combat is for the peasants.

But what is the rational to get a bow that costs 15 gc over a sling that costs 2 gc and gets to fire twice??

    Any input will be welcomed

The simplest thing to do would be to either increase the price of a sling or decrease the price of a bow to better reflect both items' in-game utility, but if you wanted to you could also weaken slings.

I'd be interested in reading what you've got so far, shooting you a PM.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

I have reduced the cost of the bow to 10 gc and changed the sling strength to 2...

Right, i've mailed you the rules.
Im all open to constructive critisism.

Start by browsing through the changed rules and the new rules, especially the Peasant rules.

    Sling 5gc
R18", S3, Cannot be Poisoned, Cannot cause Critical Wounds
(no shooting twice but maybe no -1 for moving and shooting)

    Long Bow 15gc
R30", S3, S4 if not moving the same turn.

if these are the dark ages i think you could argue that the crossbows will only have R24".

    Re: Mordheim dark ages

    keep javelins at 5gc?

    And a Bow would be 5 gc, S3 24" ?

Yes crossbows could be dropped to 24"

Noone starts with longbows, only welsh heroes can get them later on.

Javelins at 2gc. Strength as user. 8" range. ignores movement and long range penalties.

Sling 5 gc. As basic rules.

    Bow 10gc As basic rules.

Cross bow 25 gc Range 24 " S4 Move or fire

Long bow 30 gc Range 30" S3 Move and fire

I think i might go with this

-sling is by far the best weapon then. firing twice is so powerful

I just dont understand why it can fire twice when a bow cant... should just remove the fire twice and set the range to 18... meh.

    Re: Mordheim dark ages

    Yes I will
So youngbloods? or rather, squires, with fitting dark age names...

    Re: Mordheim dark ages

    i think youngbloods are fluffy heroes, yes. just be aware that 4 2 2 3 3 1 3 1 6 / 15gc / 0xp is actually quite better on a hero than 4 4 3 3 3 1 3 1 7 / 35gc / 8xp. so i usually lower champions to 30gc / 6xp

    Re: Mordheim dark ages

But thats the point of youngbloods isnt it? To become better than the previous heroes?

So 2 young bloods per army. now i need fitting words for them,

I think the word im after is Squire but i need it for

    Vikings
    Welsh
    Anglo saxons
    Scots
    Irish

Also you might notice that the warbands are significantly larger than normal mordheim, about twice the size.

There might lead to problems especially the exploration, but im thinking of forcing a 6 dice cap on that roll. So if you have 10 heroes, you get 1 roll with 6 dice and 1 with 4 dice.

I'd rather have something else than exploration but that will come later.

    Re: Mordheim dark ages

Ok pondering over the factions and their style of play.

    Vikings,
have access to the throwing spear (+1 A on the first turn of combat),
alot of T4 champions and high Ld,
champions cause fear in troops with ld7 or less.

    drawbacks,
    expensive,
    lack horses.
    M4

    Anglo saxons,
have access to the thrusting spear(as normal spear),
may have 2 huscarls at T4,
but excel in cheap champions with the thegns.

    drawback,
undisciplined although their leader nullifies that to some extent.
    m4

    Caledonians,
have access to the thrusting spear,
    S4 champions,
    M5 across.
    light cavalry champions,
cheap peasants, can have lots of peasants.

    drawbacks,
    undiscplined combined with low Ld.

    welsh
    Shooty champions
    may have longbows
    extremely cheap(and crappy) ranged peasantry
cheap bradwr champions with scout move
    Movement 5

    drawbacks
    Undisciplined and low Ld
does not have access to thrusting or throwin spear.

    hibernia
    M5
    S4 champions
cheap ranged peasants and lots of them
    wardogs

    drawbacks
no access to thrusting or throwing spear
    undiscplined with low Ld

    Norman
    powerful leader and priest.
access to cheap horses when creating the warband
    access to 4+ armor
    acccess to crossbow armed peasants
access to thrusting spears and lances.

    drawbacks,
    expensive,
    champions are not as powerful
    M4

I think i need to start playing the game to understand how all of these things interact
