The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in January.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of Feb please feel free to comment on the work of others.

    Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

    The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

    Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
    A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
    A : No he can't.

    MOMUS: Mens

    DICE ROLL: 5!

UNIT: A few more temple guard and the unit champion, terradons, five chameleon skinks, 'kroxigor' and an engine of the gods howdah.

    POINTS THIS MONTH: 436

BUILD/CONVERSION: Did some temple road on the champs base.

HIGHS: I like how the stone effect on the howdah came out and the terradons look really nice with paint on.

LOWS: The tourney im entered in has been pushed forward, meaning i probably wont finish the army in time.

NEXT MONTH: Last sallie, handlers, extra handlers, stegadon, slann, five chameleon skinks and about forty(?!) remaining skink cohorts.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

    ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: 1 Supreme Sorceress and 1 Hydra with handlers

BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight of the box (which in case of the Hydra came from Grendel). The Sorceress stands on an inverted base filled with water effect, which regrettably is impossible to see in the pictures, to make it look like she is drawing her swirling magical energies from the ocean. The base for the Hydra was made from GW's modular base kit, because the thing turned out to be bigger than expected.
A low is the water effect I'm using, because that stuff shrinks so incredibly much. I've filled the Sorceress's base to the brim four times now and still it's half empty. Or half full, if you are one of those ridiculous optimistic types.

HIGHS & LOWS: Getting something finished for this army is a high by itself. And I am very pleased how the base for the Hydra worked out.

    POINTS: 400

TOTAL POINTS: 915 (which means I get one Joker back)

    LOKI73: Mens

    DICE ROLL: 4!

UNIT: Ok, 15 savage orcs, ten archers and five boyz, three trolls and Wurzaag

POINTS THIS MONTH: 590 (can I use some of these points to get rid of some jokers?)

BUILD/CONVERSION: did the scenic base on wurzag not much conversion work this time.

HIGHS: I'm liking the skin tones finally and the woad tats. I like painting teef and toez.

LOWS: painting metal just grinds my gears. I had a bit of trouble with wurzag but he was still a fun model. Layering upon layering of orc skin to get it just right.

NEXT MONTH: Looks like I'll have thirty more savages in the mail, one Avatar of war brute, another wurzagg (for bits) and five boar boysz.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

Well this month was all about characters. First of all I converted up a couple for my brother and painted them to help him starting his new orc army, and then I needed to convert up some crazy characters for my Battle of the Beast tournament where you can mount monsters from any book.

Units and Points: Orc warboss on stonehorn, great night goblin shaman on abyssal terror, savage orc great shaman, and black orc bsb for a total of 910.

Highs and lows: I've had this stornhorn conversion sitting around for a long time so it was great to finish it off (plus it did great at the tournament), plus my brother loved the characters I made for him. The low would be the night goblin shaman conversion which was rush being that the model was converted and painted the night before the tournament.

What I'm going to actually need to do now is combine this to say I'm done my men's entry (join my men and boyz together) as I'm now going to be blitzing a 2K ogre army in a two and a half months.

    Lets see how it goes...

Please, be a nitpick. That way we keep it tidy.

And, finally, an entry of my own!

    ARMY: Orcs & Goblins

    UNIT: 1 Black Orc Warboss

BUILD/CONVERSION: The wyvern was painted last year, so I'm not counting nor discussing that one. The Warboss, based on the Azhag model, had the banner removed and now got a shield instead of a second hand weapon. That way, I can use it as a normal Warboss instead of Azhag. (EDIT- Nearly forgot... I also cut off the hanging bit of his mouth, and resculpted it to give him a normal mouth.)

HIGHS & LOWS: High is finally getting something actually finished. It's the first model since last year January...

    POINTS: 163

    TOTAL POINTS: 163

The best thing is, with him finished I got a three of a kind!

    ARMY: Dwarfs

    UNIT: Organ Gun

BUILD/CONVERSION: No converting at all, just paint them up and on to the next thing! Same colours as the rest of the army.

HIGHS & LOWS: Loved this model, and crew. It is a really cool version! I hate to be on the opposing side of it because it allways rolls a high number of attacks against me...

    POINTS: 120p

    TOTAL POINTS: 945p

Also made this for my newly painted wall.

Well, lets see if i can get some Longbeards done for next update!

    Army: Avelorn (Wood Elves)

    Unit: Six Treekin

    Points: 390

    Total Points So Far: 1530

I was asked last month how I get my natural looking wood/bark on the dryads and treekin. I start by basecoating Adeptus Battlegrey, then drybrush Astronomicon Grey. Then I wash with Ogryn Flesh, straight with no water, and then highlight again with an extremely dry, extremely light drybrush of Astronomicon Grey.

Anyway, the challenge this month was to get what I generally consider to be some poor looking models to look better. The colorful basing was a given, and then I made sure to get as much green and other bright colors onto the models as possible. The eyes are bright blue, the spites purple, and I even went so far as to give some of them green "hair" and "beards", just to get some bright colors onto the otherwise bland colors. Since these models were finecast, I also modified them somewhat to have less limbs so that they look more aggressive and streamlined. Anway...

ARMY: The Sons of the Mountain, 2000 point Ogre Kingdoms Army

    UNIT: Ogre Leadbelchers

HIGHS: Like the bulls, nice simple models to paint, and I like the little gnobblar on the bellowers shoulder.

LOWS: No real lows, apart from the fact they were nearly finished at Christmas and yet it took me over a month to finish them.

    POINTS: 192.

    DICE ROLL: 1

NEXT MONTH: Warhammer Forge Cursed Ettin.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

Hi, here is my entry for january 2012

    Category : boyz

    Army : Orcs and Goblins

    Units : orc shaman (65 pts), night goblin shaman (50 pts), 3 cave squigs (24 pts) = 129 pts (424 pts/1200 pts)

    Dice roll : 5

Highs : I had fun painting the shamans, even if it took me quite some time since I wanted to do my best on them. The squigs were quite easy and quick to paint, which is most welcomed in an army with a high number of models. I'm proud how the skin on the shamans turned out.

Lows : the time spent on the shamans, and also the fact that I've still some details not painted on both of them (but for not knowing what colour to paint them).

Still to do : varnish and glueing some grass, the same as all my model in fact ^^

    Onto the pictures :

    The tale so far :

Bonus track !!! February wip :

Visit and rate my fantasy log : A lot of green against a feeble mind
    Models painted 2011= 45 / 2012 = 62 / 2013 = 7

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

@Everyone: Sorry for not replying to the previous thread. The last 2 weeks have been a whirlwind.

Three things got in the way of painting progress:

    (a) My friend found me a job.
    (b) I just bought a bundle of all pretty much every White Dwarf from 100 to now and browsed through them all
    (c) It has taken me weeks to find the pics of the original Heroquest painted figures by Mike McVey (they are on the side of the box, not up on any BoardGameGeek pics, and in WD c.115).

Unfortunately the job fell through, so I have had to move and then move back in the last fortnight! :O

Browsing the WDs took ages! <sigh>

I did finally find the pics from HQ so I can now paint my Chaos Sorceror.

I promise that 'Acts of God' notwithstanding, I shall comment on everybody's progress this month. The armies all look great so far.

@Malorian: I've not dropped out of Chaos. I'll catch up over the Tale. Everything's cool, I will get on top of the painting.

    Hi all.

    Army: OnG
    Points this month: 290
    Total points so far: 600
    Unit: Araknarok

    EDIT DICE ROLL 1

Highs: Glad to see it finished and the more I look at it, the happier I am, I also like the Dark blue I have with shields and spiders tying in the army together nicely.

Lows: Took such a long time to paint, rushed in the end, would like to have done 800 points by this stage, will try to get more than 200 each month for the next few months to catch up a little.

Zark's Averland Dogs of War expansion Month 5

    Roll: 1

    Units:
18 Crossbowmen with Marksman and Musician
18 Crossbowmen with Marksman and Musician
    Cannon
    Cannon

    Points: 159 + 159 + 85 + 85 = 488pts

    Total: 1596 + 488 = 2084pts

Fairly productive month - 2 decently sized units of Gunners (They use Tilean 'Light Shot' which flies further but has less penetration power - aka 'count as Crossbows')

One unit uses 'The Blessing' as musician and marksman, the other uses an Empire citizen duellist and Hasslefree Bard.

Not much special with the cannons aside from some headswaps and one converted crew using Militia body and legs. They have been named 'Bertha' and 'Cynthia' (My first one is 'Agatha' - I haven't gotten around to adding the names to the bases though)

Am housesitting at the moment so don't have my usual photography set up, so afraid the pics are even worse than usual!

Technically I'm finished for the year, but I've enjoyed the project so will probably continue with the Dogs. Hopefully I can maintain my 400ppm average

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

    ARMY: 1000 points High Elves

BACKGROUND: This army defends the kingdom Avelorn in the north of Ulthuan.

Last month I promised you 14 swordmasters. And I was happily painting when real life knocked on my door ....... with a sledgehammer...
We had to move my father to a nursing home because of his deteriorating health. No time or energy to paint swordmasters.
But I don't want to use a joker. So I have quickly painted an eagle.

    UNIT: Great Eagle

CONVERSION: These old eagles have got big wings and small bodies. My brother helped me bulk out the body and shoulders with a piece of sprue, super glue and green stuff.

BASE: A Micro Art Studio Ruins base. Last month I said that there once was a white wizard's tower in Avelorn. That explains why Avelorn has his own unit of swordmasters. This eagle is sitting on the ruins of the white tower. The blue vial on the left is a remainder of the wizard's inventory.

    POINTS: 50 points

    DICEROLL: 3
