@Momus Nice color choices very uniform. I like them allot!

@EmperorNorton Love the dark elves. I especially like your hydra. You put allot of effort modelling wise into it. Nice job!

@Malorian Nice stuff! I was going to do something similar with the stone horne. I was going to add a howdah with 4 savage orcs. Do your friends let you add a lord to the top as a mount? Very kool!

@Gogs Nice HE! Very clean and beautiful!

@Braad Nice job! I like the one in the middle best. Is that a savage orc shaman?

@Guardsmenhawke Nice elves man. Looks like your getting allot done. One of the banners looks like it has some over spray though. The faces look especially good!

@Kaos Those dwarves are pimp! I sooooo want to do a dwarf army now!

@Tekore Love the woodies man not enough of those armies on the table.

@Laborious Nice ogres looks very cold!

@azhagmorglum Ace dood! Love the squigs.

    @RIKK that spider rocks!

@zarkthedammned Nice man! very uniform! I like the great cannon esp.

    @Greathornedowl wow! cool basing!

    @doomscape nice death roller!

@Doi Nice conversion work! Very cool stonehorn

@daismith lookin good dood. Love the fur on the cannon rhinox.

@jackdaw omg thats ace! Great idea!

@Morglum necksnapper wow those look very very fun! The shrooms are kool! I love how the whole army is muted a bit kind sof scary yet fun with little guys! Almost alice in wonder land or Jim Henson like!

@perplexiti Nice! you hvae done allo. I hope to get there soon!

@Morksh Is that forge world? Very nice!

    @DAgabriel whoa! Nice!

@Shandowner THIS IS WARHAMMER! lol great!

@Loki73: Would you mind if I tried out that orange? Do you base in black or white? And every time I see you work on orcs, it reminds me that I’ve got zillions of them to get cracking on – thanks for the inspiration, I might have to get started on them once the demons are done.
I based with army painter vermin fur (i think) then I air brushed on P3 Khador red highlight.

Haven`t got my paint here, started white for the mini; feathers basecoated with a dark grey, drybrushed fortress grey, washed black, drybrushed fortress grey, washed thinned brown, slight drybrush white.

I always put the points painted on the month they are painted in. That looks nicer in the graph. However, if you paint enough, I change "Joker" to "0". So, indeed, you got no jokers. You'll see in next month's table.

No, a warboss. I did convert him from a shaman, but that was mainly because I needed a mostly naked body.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

Righty, time for some comments then people.

It is sad to see people leaving, but everyone's got their reasons - I'm just happy I got to see a bit of their stuff before they left.

    Page 1
MOMUS - everythings coming along nicely there fella - the howdah looks especially good

Emperor Norton - I've already commented on your Sorceress on your plog, but she still looks great. The Hydra has come out really well as well, the little touchs on the base are top notch

Loki73 - great job making the Savage Orc plastics look good fella

Malorian - nice conversion work, the Stonehorn actually looks pretty good with an Orc on top.

Gogs78 - really nice work, the crisp white and metallics work nicely with that rich imperial purple. That's how High Elves should look.

    Braad
    - more nice greenskins, a trio of Wyverns is a huge amount of work so kudos to you

GuardsmenHawke - coming along very nicely fella, very nicely indeed

    Kaos
    - beautiful work on that classic sculpt, the crew look great

Tekore - I'm not a fan of the Treekin models, but you've done a good job on them - the basing finishes them off nicely

Laborious - solid work mate. I feel your pain in terms of low output, but these Ogres are looking good

AzhagMorglum - I think your Orcs are my favourite so far. Your skin tone and highlighting is great and there's a real nice natural look to your army far. More please!

    Rikk
    - great looking Spider fella, the markings are great work

Zark the Damned - loving the bright yellow cloth, very striking

Great Horned Owl - lovely scenic base, and the eagle is very nicely done. Looking forward to seeing more of your elves.

    Page 2
CKT - again, a monumental output from you. The new pics are much easier to look at as well, really showing your work off nicely.

Doomscape (Dwarves) - that unit is full of character, I love the Blood Bowl fillers. Great work

    Doomscape (Daemons)
    - the green is still a bit much for me, but the finished effect is good.

Doi (Dark Elves) - Yay, more lovely Dark Elves! Your skin tone is lovely, very smooth - though I can tell those ladies are a little chilly in that snow. Ahem. The assassin looks good as well. Now paint some more damn you.

Doi (Ogres) - more sterling work there, very nice indeed.

    Daismith906
    - loving these blue Ogres mate. The big ol' doom-gun came out nicely as well.

    Morglum Necksnapper
    - your conversions always raise a smile mate, fantastic work as always.

    Perplexti (Dwarves)
    - nice work on those Dwarves, good to see the WD mini getting used.

Perplexti (Lizardmen) - the grey colour is an interesting choice, very natural looking. Can't wait to see more.

Morkash - great work there fella, though the lighting in some pics does hide a bit of the work you've clearly put in. The last pic does a great job showing off the work you put into the faces.

DAGabriel - nice work on the Carrion, but that base for the Hellcannon is a show-stealer.

    Page 3
    Shandowner
    - Fantastic work fella, not much else I can say really. Kudos to you.

    Fabius Bile
    - looks great mate, really nice. The base is pretty special.

    Purplebeard
    - that dwarf lord is ace, really nice sculpt. I am disappointed by the lack of purple in his beard though.... . Nice to see those classic minis in your Chaos army as well.

And replies to people kind enough to comment on mine:
@ Perplexti - cheers mate - its such a simple but effective conversion I think.
@ Doomscape - haha feel free to steal away mate, feel free. Next time I'm across the pond I'm sure the House of Chains will be more than happy to pay your foolish Asur a visit
@ Purplebeard - thanks mate, glad you liked the green eyes - they were an odd choice for a FB unit but I think they've paid off.
@ DAGabriel - again, thanks mate.
@ CKT - cheers fella. The inverse colour scheme came out well in the end, I wasn't too sure about bone cloaks to start with if I'm honest.
@ Loki73 - heh cheers mate sometimes the simplest ideas are the best.

Almost done....just a heads up on WiP for me - the last 6 Wardens, Nymeria herself (although she is already finished - sneak pic to come), a chariot (finally) and possibly Hiroth as well....

    Cheers everyone!

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

OK, after the housesitting and a chaotic week followed by a weekend of tidying around the flat (still tons to do ) I am getting around to some comments at last!

MOMUS - I like the bright colours and always good to see classic Lizzies, but I feel the faces could use more definition - then again, easy enough to go back over after your Tourney

EmperorNorton - Cracking Hydra and Sorceress, you've really captured the 'Sea-Witch' vibe with the swirling waters.

Loki73 - Savage Orcs looking great as ever, and that Troll Vomit looks positively disgusting! (in a good way )

Malorian - Decent conversions and paint job, though I feel the skin and bone could do with a wash to make it pop more.

gogs78 - Great looking Elves, I still love the purple and gold theme.

Braad - Fantastic conversion wor, I didn't even realise it was converted til I re-read your post! Hope you get to use all of the flying brigade sometine

GuardsmenHawke - Generally good looking elves, there are a couple of blotchy areas ont he chariot which could use a touch up (mainly the 'wings' at the back)

Kaos - Loving the bright blue on the Dwarfs, makes a good contrast with the usual dark, earthy schemes I see. Love the wall paintings too, looks great!

Tekore - Decent enough Treekin - hard to make out details like faces though (though tbh that's an issue with the minis rather than your painting).

Laborius - Solid Ogres, will look great as part of the army.

azhagmorglum - Great use of deep colouring, and I love the patchwork cloak on the Orc shaman. Like the grey Squig as well, makes a good contrast to the usual bright red ones.

Rikk - The markings on the giant spider look great, overall a neat job.

Great horned owl - Very natural looking scheme on the eagle, I especially like the different browns on the wings.

colonel kane trine - Solid work on the gribblies this month, though I feel they could benefit from a wash to deine the shading more, especially the spawn on the left.

doomscape - Great work on the Dwarfs, you've managed to keep them unified as a unit despite having different bright colours on them. Loving the Deffroller filler - reminds me of a madcap plan I once had to have a unit of them in my DOW as counts-as Ogres with Greatweapons. Solid work on the Daemons too.

Doi - Boobs! Those ladies are gonna be cold! More seriously, good work on the pale skin and the dark cloth on the assassin. The Stonehorn looks cracking too.

daismith906 - Amazing Ironblaster, shame you had to cheat Good luck for next month!

JackDaw - Fantastic looking unit, I love the black/green contrast.

Morglum Necksnapper - Good work on the filthy little green beggars. The pump wagons are very characterful and ramshackle, look like they'll fall apart as soon as the wind changes

perplexiti - Generally good looking Dwarfs and Lizardmen, but could perhaps use some more contrast between colours.

andrewdrexler - Shame to hear about you getting out of the hobby, I hope all goes well and you get a good buyer for the woodies.

Morkash - Good work on the Ettin, looks gnarly. Could do with some tatoos or markings to break up the vast expanses of flesh though.

DAGabriel - Suitable gribbly carrion and neat chariot, keep up the good work.

Shandowner - Digging the Spartan Elf theme, though the Swordmasters could do with more bodies and less empty space.

Darnok - Shame to hear it, I hope you get motivation for the fat lardies soon!

Fabius Bile - Nice work on the Thundertusk, generally solid work and the ice base is fantastic!

Purplebeard - Grudgethrowers looking great so far, and goos work with the Chaos nasties. Love the rainbow hair, reminds me of my namesake figure from many years ago.

And yeah, the pics are pretty terrible. In my defence I was housesitting at the weekend so pretty much just grabbed my camera and painting stuff, didn't really have a good area to take pics. I will do some better ones sometime.

Cheers - essentially I already had a ton of handgunners from when I was about to start an Empire army and decided against replacing them all with crossbows.

I am planning on an army shot for month 6 now I'm no longer housesitting and have access to all my figs and usual photgraphy area.
I like both types of handgunner, will be having a mix (I already have some new ones with Crossbows painted up from the last Tale)

Thanks, I have been unusually motivated this tale. I will get an army shot done this month, I promise!

    ---

So, what next? Technically I've finished my 2k, but I'm not out of the tale just yet! I still have loads to paint up, although I can't commit to a points value just yet (as I haven't figured it out yet!).

I have already painted up a few characters this month, am practicing some speed painting techniques which have gone well so far.

I have also dug out a bunch of my previous characters and named them, I am hoping to get the chance to write up a paragraph or too of fluff for each of them (having been inspired by reading JackDaw's army thread recently).

Ok, screw the switch to ogres. It was a total flop...

I tried an African theme and it just didn't work... every time I try to get back at it it looks like garbage.

    Guess I'm sticking with orcs...

Ok, it's comments time....... here goes:

    @MOMUS - Good looking lizzies!
@Emperornorton - Sorceress looks great, love the Hydra
@Loki73 - Brilliant Savage Orcs as usual - you have a very characterful army there
@Malorian - cool Stonehorn, looks great with the Orc Warboss on it
@Gogs78 - Very neat, well painted elves
    @Braad - That's a fine collection of Wyverns
    @GuardsmenHawke - Great Chariot!
@Kaos - Very nice dwarves, love the blue wood!
    @Laborious - cool Leadbelchers!
@AzhagMorglum - Great looking Shamen(?) - the skintones have come out particularly well
@Rikk - looks like you had fun there
@ZarktheDamned - Good to see the Averland colours!
@GreatHornedOwl - nice work, love the base
    @Colonel Kane Trine - That's a lot of work - well done!
@Doomscape - those are very colourful dwarves!
@Doi - Nice flying Pegasus, Stonehorn and Rider turned out well - I love that kit!
@DaiSmith906 - Cool Ironblaster - your Ogre skin tones are starting to grow on me, not sure about the gnoblars being the same colour though
@Jackdaw - love the colour scheme, it really works on those Dark Elves!
@Morglum Necksnapper - I love what you do with your bases, and the converted Pump Wagons!
@Perplexiti - great work as always
@Morkash - Love the skin tone on the giant - very cool!
@DAGabriel - That Carrion looks suitably repulsive!
@Shandowner - Great looking unit - very unique!
@Purplebeard - Nice stonethrowers, love the dwarf's blue beard!

Cheers! It's really, really simple, and discovered by accident:

    Astronimican grey basecoat

Watery wash of vallejo electric blue (or gw ice blue) all over. Don't bother mixing the paint too much if it's separated in the pot, helps with the effect.

reapply astronomican grey as 1st highlight.

50/50 mix astronomican grey / skull white.

Skull white as a final highlight.

The base itself was 6 pieces of slate from the garden, set in model filler.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

Comments for everyone on page 1:
@Momus: Looking good and nice bases. I think just a little more highlights on the scales would make them even better. Or does the photo not show the colours as they are?
@EmperorNorton: I see you have got your mojo back. And not a little bit. These are gorgeous. I want to see more, keep it up.
@Loki73: Nice rich greens and contrasting blue and orange. What’s the purple one on the left in the first picture?
@Malorian: over a 1000 points in one month? Look out or you’ll end up as Colonel Kane Trine . Just kidding. They all look good. Maybe a few close-ups next time? I would like to see the expression on their faces.
@gogs78: These are as clean and bright as the others you did. That will be an impressive armyshot at the end of the Tale.
@Braad: I’m glad you were able to post pictures this month. I don’t know the Azhag model that well, so I hadn’t noticed that you changed the jaw. In my opinion conversions that look natural are the best.
@GuardsmenHawke: Well done, sorry to hear that you dropped out. The buyer is a lucky person.
@Kaos: I like it. The dwarf with the barrel is one of my favourite dwarfs. The markings on the gun from yellow to red are a nice detail.
@Tekore: I am not a fan of these models either. But you have made them look the best they can. Well done.
@Laborious: I like the goblin too. The ogres are good, but maybe I would have made their hands and arms a bit dirty.
@azhagmorglum: the extra time spent on your characters paid off. Good Shading and highlighting.
@Rikk: I hate spiders, but I would like to see a close up of the crew. As far as I can see they are very good.
@Zark the Damned: Nice ‘diorama’ with the priest blessing the gun/gunman. I think large blocks of handgunners look a bit boring. You have solved that problem very well.

    Page 2
@colonel kane trine: The herd is growing steadily…..look out, there’s a nurgle champion trying to infect your gors! You didn’t mention him, did you count him as a gor?
@doomscape (dwarfs): I like your dwarfs and the fluff you wrote. Why don’t you start a plog so I can read more please?
@doomscape (demons): I like those old furies. And the juggernaut looks very aggressive. Great pose.
@Doi (dark elves): Well done, very sinister. Maybe a bit too dark for my taste, but that’s why I don’t have dark elves of course.
@Doi (ogres): Impressive. A lot of work for one month and well done. Nice aged look on the gutplate.
@daismith906: Your friend has done a good job. The blue on the ogre looks a bit brighter than on your own ogres. Or is that just the photo?
@JackDaw: your guards (and Nymeria) are great. Even better if you have read the fluff. People who haven’t read it should take a look at your plog. I love it.
@Morglum Necksnapper: very creative modelling and painting. Haven’t you got more models so you can continue the Tale?
@perplexiti (dwarfs): the white dwarf, another of my favourites. Job well done. The anvil is also very good.
@perplexiti (Lizardmen): Looking good. Sadly the photo is a bit blurred, I would like to take a better look at their heads.
@Morkash: That is creepy, but in a good way.
@DAGabriel: congratulations on finishing the tomb kings. Will you give us an armyshot now or in the last month (or both)?
The base is great, maybe add a little more red on the edges of the yellow?

    Page 3
@shandowner: congratulations on finishing the army. A very creative version of the high elves. Looking forward to seeing the chaos dwarves.
@Fabius Bile: You have made a great balanced model. The poses, colours and base fit very well together. My compliments.
@purplebeard (dwarves): I like it already, don’t change it too much.
@purplebeard (chaos): Yes, the heroquest witch lord. I have been waiting for that. I love it. The others are also great. I like the rainbow hair.
Now that I see that, I wonder what colour hair do your dwarf slayers have? Just curious.
Owl can spell his name ("Wol") and the word "Tuesday" (so that you know it isn't Wednesday). He can also read, although only if no-one is looking over his shoulder.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

    Replies:

@JackDaw: I know. They can't all have purple beards, though a good number do (he does have a purple cloak though!). The last few remaining bits of my sanity might be destroyed if I were to deploy an all-purple force. Or that of my opponents. And I don't want to be held responsible for that. So I've thrown in a few other beard colours. Variety is the spice of life etc etc

@Zark the Damned: Thank you. The grudgethrowers are proving to be good fun to paint. I'll definitely pick up more Foundry figures in future.
I don't know what the original colour scheme for the Warlock was, but I think he was in a really old WD (?). I'd love to know more about him.

@Fabius Bile: Thank you. They are good fun to paint. War machines are the way forward for me.

@Great horned owl: Yep - got it. I'm only lightening the red, adding details to the dragon heads, and then highlighting/shading. And maybe 1 more layer on the beard.

As for the Heroquest figure, I sat on it for ages, because I wanted to copy the original colours from the figure on the side of the box. Amazingly, I failed to find the pics from the side of the box on boardgamegeek or elsewhere online, and have ahd to wait for months. I finally found the pic I was after - White Dwarf 113, pg 35. It isn't a perfect copy by any means but it'll serve its purpose. I'll sort out the Rainbow Warlock with a realistic butterfly pattern on his wings, but I have to do the research first.

My slayers all have different beard and hair colours, as do the rest of my Dwarves. I mix them pretty randomly, and include all of the normal hair colours plus purples, blues, and greens. There are slayer pics on pages 5 and 8 of my plog (link in my sig). The only thing is that I have now seen some on another plog somewhere with striped hair patterns and they look amazing.

I'll keep mine as they are though, and put that other plogger into my book of grudges, for coming up with an even better idea grrr.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 5 (Jan painting and Feb WIP

Hey folks, it is with much sadness that I'm going to have to withdraw from the TOFP for this year all together =( Of everything I was hoping to paint for this month in order to catch up I have only managed to paint 3 Ogre Bulls and therefore only 6 since the start of the Tale so I am miles off target. I am enjoying painting again but unfortunately I just can't dedicate much time to it due to other commitments. I will still carry on painting and update my PLOG (see my sig) when I have done stuff but need to carry on at my own pace. Will still keep checking in on these every month and offering comments though as I am certainly inspired to keep painting by the work I see here.
My Various Painting Projects, just added Reek Rolat and SDE Dwarf. Please check it out and leave feedback which is all gratefully received

Miniatures bought this year: 401 (Bloody Kickstarter) Miniatures painted this year: 42

All in favour of adding Jonahmaul's name next to mine in the rules about leaving? *raises hand* .

I believe you're looking for Malorian or Brass. Misterboff is over on the 40k side .

    @ confessor Atol: Good luck!
@ Braad: concerning Doi and Jonahmaul: Raise my hand, too.
@ Great horned owl: Sorry, no Army shot before weather warms up. Can`t take decent photos inside atm. Perhaps in March or April.
@ everyone who liked the base for the Hellcannon: i liked it, too. But it drowns the model. Can`t find a way to center attention on the models with this base so i think i will rework it into a piece of terrain like a temple?

well, I snapped a pic with my phone, and it's just horrible.. about the only thing I could use it for is proof, but it wouldn't prove much. just trust me when I say that I finished my BSB and he is around 165 points.. we are going camera shopping when the tax refund hits out bank account. I'm also getting a new luxo combo lamp
A shake of this and a sprinkle of that, then BAM!!!! It's my PLOG! (contains dark elf, dwarf, lizards and more)
    Dark Elf revamp in progress...
