The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 5 & February WIP

Alright! Fully painted games are constantly being added to the roster. Seven now!

Welcome to the Tale of Board Game Painters

    What's it all about?
A lot of us wargamers have bought or been given some really impressive board games through the years that have had one extra special selling point; cool miniature game pieces. Mine (and my brother's) include Hero Quest, Space Crusade, Blood Bowl, Space Hulk (both editions) and most recently Chaos in the Old World.

When we opened the boxes we all dreamed of how awesome it would look (in just a few weeks, right?) when we'd have painted every single miniature to the best of our abilities. Awesome atmospheric board pieces with super realistic miniatures all over. Then a few weeks go by, sometimes a few months and for way too many of us a few years. The games are still awesome but all that paint seems to have taken the wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Enter the Tale of Board Game Painters. Now we're going to use the collective power of motivation to really get it done! Participants choose a miniature board game from their collection - one's enough for most of us; after all, they've been unpainted this long already, let's not get carried away - and paint it up in 5 to 10 batches over a period of 6 to 12 months.

At the end of each month (or the beginning of the next actually) we take photos of the month's good work, post it on that month's show off thread and give comments and encourage our fellow painters to keep on truckin'!!

More detailed description of the time plan and structure can be found in the OP of the signup thread here!

Here are our painters at the beginning of this month:

Please let me know if you feel any of the info is wrong or if I've misinterpreted how/when you're painting the games.

    Board games finished: 5
    #1: steevn - Utopia - 5 miniatures
    #2: robscott5598 - Fury of Dracula - 5 miniatures
#3: steevn - Lady and the Muskateers - 6 miniatures
    #4: robscott5598 - Lost Patrol - 5 miniatures
    #5: robscott5598 - Claustrophobia - 6 minis painted
    #6: robscott5598 - Shadows over Camelot - 30 minis painted
#7: Solun Decius - Chaos in the Old World - 60 minis painted

In this thread we start by posting last month's painting, our batches of finished miniatures. Include info on what the miniatures are and what portion of the whole game we feel we've finished. Then we comment on each others good work and begin posting WIPs of our next batch.

Don't forget you can still sign up anytime!

    Happy Painting!

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 5 & February WIP

ok, slowing things down a bit this month for me as I begin to show signs of painting burn out is one single figure for the "Merlin's Men" expansion for Shdows Over Camalot. Eventually this month needs to also see the finished Merlin piece itself.

In the meantime, here's Mr. Belvedere, the knight who's heraldy is a cow, looking up at a star.

also I got distracted recently....it happens a lot around here.

Firstly let me state my secret shame. I like a kaiju now and then. More often than is healthy actually.
"What is a Kaiju?", you say? Well it's a sorta giant monster, of the rubber suited, building smashing, Tokyo stomping, movie variety.
Hence I love me some Godzilla. I really do.

And I finally got my copy of the new Godzilla: Kaiju World Wars board game. And I wanted to love it too.

But it kinda stunk. In little ways. The "Monster" pieces are kinda cheap, gimcky, and very poorly pre-painted.
Rodan can't stand up, ever, at ALL. And the rules are made of somthing sorta like English run through a blender and carlessly
not checked to prevent little things like all the cards having rules language which is directly opposite of what is in the rule book.

But my friends and I loved the idea of the game. And even despite the issues we found there was some grain of really fun board game
Tokoyo smashing fun to be had underneath all the rubble. Now the games' Author has released finished, updated, corrected rules
via his posts on Board Game Geeks.com, and I have found perfect subsititute Godzilla Figures..........

Plus I was feeling left out since about the only board game I don't own is Super Dungeon Explore with it's redicilously cute little
    Super Deformed bigheaded noggin fun......

    Thus........

I found some SD chibi Godzilla figures and absolutely loved them. The game is even more fun now when you consider we are laying epic level city destroying smack downs with cute huge noggin versions of "scary monsters". The figures came prepainted, but I decided I needed to repaint these myself because they looked like so much fun and I could add tons of extra little movie accurate details.

Now I just gotta finish King Ghidorah, Gigan and Rodan for the base game....I may do some extras too for the home made expansions like Mothra

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 5 & February WIP

@robbscott5598: Anyone would have thought you had enough games as it was how wrong we were! That is a nice big head Godzilla. I hope you manage to get some enthusiasm back this month in time to finish everything!

This month I've got the Black Kraken and the treasure tokens finished as planned (Its always nice to finish what you hoped to finish):

Also did its auxiliary. I wish I'd painted up the cogs for the first two boats as they were painted, its alot easier just using the same colours rather than trying to remember them.

Treasure tokens (quick and easy to paint)

Im thinking that with 7 months left to the tale, I should finish on time if I paint one ship and one batch of other bits, be it scenery or accessories, a month. My aim this month then will be to get a few Islands and hopefully the skabrus (plus cog) done, so long as I can get outside and undercoat it. If not I'll probably do the dwarf one instead. Good times all round.

@HereBeDragons: As I've said on your log the Kraken looks great, as do the accessories. I think one ship plus roughly 1/10 of the extras is a pretty good plan. If it continues over to the next tale then that's no problem.

@robscott: That one figure is pretty good and the chibi godzilla is awesome. Can't wait to see more on that front.

OK, I've finished the Skaven for CitOW which makes the game complete.

I still think I'll do some touch-ups for the all of the powers, but for now it's still fully painted and finished.

Here are a couple of photos from last night's session (or I kind of posed them back on the table after the game ended ):

    That's it, I guess!

Awesome stuff on the CITOW Solun Decius. Got the core game myself and have toyed with the idea of painting the figures up but somehow would still rather keep them in their 'naked' state. I guess it's down to wanting to make sure each faction is clearly distinguishable. However, your example has shown how nice it can look so I'm revising my opinion.

Also didn't know about the Horned Rat expansion - how very remiss of me! Have ordered it and am looking forward to it arriving next week. We'd just been talking in the last few days about having a game of CITOW again. This will 'cement' the deal.

Cool jez and thanks! You won't be disappointed, as it's not only the addition of another power, but also a full new set of upgrades/chaos cards for everyone. The game is actually so cool unpainted too, and the state of half-painted is always an eyesore. However, if you really dedicate yourself to finishing, I'd say it's totally worth it.

@Solun Decius: That set looks awesome all together! Fantastic work! I still hope to get the Dreadfleet models finished by the end of this tale, I think that would be nicer than having them run over. I also may have a plan for the next tale I notice you're planning ahead for the that with a second sign up. Very dedicated of you!

Rob - An excellent knight as always and I'm loving Godzilla :-D. He looks great!
Herebedragons - Good stuff on the dreadfleet. I particularly like the crests of the waves and how detailed you've painted the cog's sails, especially knowing how small they are.
Solun - That looks fantastic painted. You've done a brilliant job and it makes me think I should paint my set as I love the game so much.
Steevn - Excellent painting and I really like those bases.

As for mine. Here is what I managed to do in January (I really need to work on my photography :-)). I've been finding the faces really difficult as they are very small but they've been pretty fun to paint. I've left the bases for the moment and will do them at the end.

Re: The Tale of Board Game Painters 2011-2012 Month 5 & February WIP

Wow Solun, CITOW looks great! It's such a nice feeling to have a finished game that your proud of to share with friends huh?
That's why I'm constantly getting sidetracked with other board games with small numbers of minis. They are games we play often and it just feels great
to have the chance to play something that looks and feels complete!

@Steevn, thanks for taking the time to get us better pics of your finished CoT minis. (Yet Another game I need to paint some day) they look marvelous, especially for how small and delicate the sculpting is on them. Way to go!

@SK1ndred, Wow. The Mansions of Madness minis look great once painted (Again, I need to get to mine some day! Those investigators look nice! I especially am enamored of the hobo and the professor. Very nice warm tones of brown ect....
You may have already addressed the white paint on the bases, but.........The migo look like they need just a little cleaning up, the wings and the bases, and then they will look ace!

@HereBeDragons, I am very jelous of your water bases for DF. They not only look nice and highcontrasty (which gives them lots of movement and power) but they are ducedly consistant across everything done so far. Would you care to share your recipie and application techniques please (Because yet again, I need to paint my copy of this board game too someday!)

As for me, I have finished the 4 base figures to replace the crapola ones for Godzilla Kaiju World Wars.
I give you chibi Gigan, chibi Ghidorah, and chibi Rodan!

Ghidorah was the hardest just getting all those gold tones to look seperate but still consistant over the large areas. Gold is not a fun color to do in large areas.
Gigan was fun but I had the most fun painting Rodan, I went with a really wet blended red over a dark brown, since the movie is so old (One of the first color movies) that his coloring is kinda not exact from scene to scene and I wanted to capture that "dark-reddish-whatexactly-color-is-he?" feel of the movie.

And because of image limits, Here's the full base game monsters
    ready to rampage!

And here are the figures for the home made expansions for Godzilla: KWW

Mothra, starts as the larvas, ends up as super powered, giant, butt kicking moth!

The only other expansion currently available is Mecha-G, so I'll be working on him as well at some point.

Hello everyone, I've finished 2 5-man squads of Imperial Fist terminators and 2 5-man squads of Space Wolves.
For detailed pictures, please see my plog, as there are far too many pictures to upload here.

I will post comments later. Next up will probably be 3 C.A.T.'s and some power field generators.

@HereBeDragons: Thanks man! Yeah, it would be cool to finish within this tale and get a fresh start in the next one. Dedicated, maybe, but that new signup thread has got exactly 0 replies as of yet

@steevn: Thanks for the nice comment! New pics are looking sharp. Good stuff!

@Sk1ndred: Cool man! The characters are ace! You've started with the weakest (in my opinion) sculpts. That's a good thing, to leave the more fun ones for later. You've done a good job, but the Mi-Go's face is just not cool (on the model) and the zombies are still just pale beach bums giving high fives
I really like what you've done with the characters, and I'm looking forward to the rest of your project.

@DAGabriel: We're totally looking forward to it

    @iamjack42: aw!

@robscott5598: That stuff is so sweet man! Cute and blood-curdling all in one little package. I love the photo background. Brilliant (and fitting what with all the giant house stomping).

@Morglum Necksnapper: Yeah! Great to have you posting again. Four 5 man squads? THat's like 750 40K points right there! That's like half an army, in one month's post. It's looking good man, and your productivity never ceases to astound me!

I'm disappointed too. Caring for a pregnant wife on bed rest combined with having to work tons of overtime has left me with little opportunity to paint. If I do manage to get something done this weekend I will post it late though. It hurts me to imagine you all deprived of me for a whole month.

I will definitely still post comments. You guys are all doing great work!

You'll get the time back later when you can watch a sleeping cradle with one eye and paint with the other.
I'm on maternity (paternity??) leave now myself, so I'm managing to squeeze in some extra painting time (paying for it with no sleep, but hey!).
