The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 6 (JAN completed work & FEB WIP)

Welcome to the Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012!

What is the Tale all about?
The aim of the Tale of Painters is to get an army fully painted within the next 12 months.

For most 40k armies the size will be somewhere between 1000 and 2000 points, but you can go higher if you want to (and you're crazy enough)! AI, BFG and Epic armies will be slightly different, but as long as you choose an appropriate sized army for your game system then there's no problem.

Once you've chosen your army, your target is to paint roughly 10% of your army each month. For example, if you've chosen a 2000 point army then your monthly target would be 200 points. The Tale runs for one year (September 2011 to August 2012), so if you stick to your 10% monthly target then you'll only need to paint for 10 months of the year.

To cover the months when you can't/don't paint, you get 2 'Jokers'. You can play a 'Joker' at any time (provided you haven't used them both up!), which essentially means that you don't have to meet your target for that month. They can used for real life events (such as births, deaths, marriages, exams, holidays) or if you're just having a bad/slow month. If you play a 'Joker' then feel free to post a suitable image instead (of a Joker or something funny).

What is this thread all about?
This thread is for completed entries for last month (up until the 10th) and work in progress (WIP) for this month (from the 11th). Please only post completed work for last month until the 10th.

From the 11th, feel free to post any WIP pictures of what you're going to be painting this month, army lists, background stories, battle reports, questions, and comments on anyone else's posts. You can post as little or as much as you like in the thread, but please keep it WIP from the 11th of the month. Do not post any completed work for this month until after the next thread opens at the start of next month.

If you have not posted by the 11th of the month, then you will have to play one of your 'Jokers'. If you have failed to post by the 11th of the month and have already played both of your 'Jokers', then unfortunately you will be out of the Tale.

    Frequently Asked Questions
Q : Am I too Late? Can I still Join in?
A : Unfortunately yes, you are now too late to join in this Tale. Don't worry though, the Tale will be running again late this year (sign-up in August for a September start).

Q : Do I have to stick to just one army?
A : No, you can paint more than one army if you want to! Quite a few people like to paint more than one army at a time, so if you fall into this category then just list each army you wish to paint when you sign up. Your armies don't have to be the same size, but please aim to paint at least 500 points for each army, otherwise you're probably better off starting your own plog if you just want to paint lots of random things. For the purposes of posting, as long as you aim for 10% of your combined total each month then it doesn't matter what order you paint things in. You could paint 10% of each army each month, or alternate armies each month, or 5 months of one army followed by 5 months of another army, or whatever combination best suits you. Regarding Jokers, you would only need to post a Joker if you didn't paint anything for any of your armies that month. If you painted one army but not the other, you would simply need to post Army 1 (x points) and Army 2 (0 points).

Q : Can I paint more than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, and it's great to get ahead. BUT, we would like you only to post 10% (approx) each month and try to stay roughly on track with 10% per month. For example, if you're painting 2000 points that means 200 points in month 1, 400 points by month 2, 600 points by month 3, etc. This way you won't depress those of us who are struggling to keep up.

Q : Can I paint less than 10% of my army in a month?
A : Yes, you aren't bound by the rules of the Tale, but we would like you to try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example, if you're painting 2000 points and you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character/tank/unit?
A : This happens a lot. If your character/tank/unit is over 10% of your army you could simply paint him/it/them over two months (the sort of time your general/tank/expensive unit deserves!). For example, one year my monthly target was 200 points and I painted a Stompa (600 points). I split painting the model into (roughly) 3 months of 200 points, posting new WIP shots each month.

Q : Do I have to play my 2 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : No, you don't have to play them at all. If you can manage to paint/post for the full 12 months then congratulations, you'll have exceeded your target and truly embodied the spirit of the Tale!

Q : Can I 'buy back' my 'Jokers' during the Tale?
A : Yes, you can 'buy back' your 'Jokers' during the Tale. If you have already played a 'Joker' and manage to get a month ahead (either by painting double one month or painting a bit more than your target for a few months), then just state in your entry for that month that you wish to 'buy back' your 'Joker' and I'll take it off for you.

Q : What's with the D6 roll in your post?
A : The D6 roll was an idea introduced to help ensure that everyone gets some comments on their work. If everyone rolls a D6 when they post (I use the [D&D dice roller] if I don't have a D6 to hand), then we should have six roughly equal groups each month. Then, if you comment on those people who rolled the same as you everyone will receive some feedback. So, if you roll a 1, comment on all of the other 1's, if you rolled a 2, comment on all of the other 2's, and so on. Of course, if you have the time/want to, there's nothing stopping you from commenting on anyone's/everyone's work.

    ##############################

I'll start off by posting my completed entry for last month. Feel free to copy my post to use as a template (edited to suit your army), but as long as you post your Monthly total, Total to date, Unit(s) painted and a picture then that's fine.

If anyone has any other questions, please direct them to misterboff (me).
No tears, please. It's a waste of good suffering.

My new job is going well, but, as predicted, it does mean that I'll be playing a joker for this month. I may have to joker again next month, but hopefully not and I'll be buying back all the jokers I do use in short order from March onward. So no worries.

Chaos Marines Project Log - Just a click away... you know you want to...

    Record as of new CSM Codex: 8 wins/ 2 losses/ 0 draws
    Record as of new Daemons Codex: 1 wins/ 1 losses/ 0 draws
    IG + Daemons Allies: 16 wins (6 tablings, 8 crushing victories, 2 1-VP scrapes)/ 0 losses/ 1 draw

Im leaning towards a Joker as well. I have a good amount of progress done on my 30 Boys. But have been distracted of late by building a Baneblade etc. I will do my best to finish the boys by the 10th. But Im thinking of just double posting next month and earning my joker back.

    AARGGHHHHHH!

    Completely and unmitigated disaster!

    CURSES!

< Many, many, many bad words that would earn me a quick whack with the dreaded Banhammer if I dared to type them out >

    Grumple...

    Mutter...

I was working on putting the final touches on Gimzod when I heard a small crack – you know, the kind of crack that usually signals that a superglue-bond has given out. And sure enough, Gimzod’s staff comes away from his arm. And, as I try to catch it before it hits the ground, Gimzod himself goes flying and hits the floor, causing yet another cracking sound as his leg comes away.

    * BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIB * !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So, sadly, this is what’s currently left of Gimzod...

Since I was thinking about stripping him and redoing the paintjob at some time I figured I might as well do that now, rather than trying to pin him together and repair all the small chips that’s now appeared...

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 6 (JAN completed work & FEB WIP)

    Monsterzonk's Heralds Of Faith: January 2012 (D6 roll = 4)

    MONTHLY TOTAL: 200 (150 TARGET)
TOTAL TO DATE: 730 POINTS (750 TARGET)
JOKERS PLAYED: 1 Can I get that back now, since I'm really close to my target? see below...

UNIT(S): Chapter Master Meridius Decius Solomon - 200 pts. (counts as Lysander)

BUILD/CONVERSION: He's based on Tyberos the Red Wake by Forge World. I replaced the arms with those of an Assault Terminator, the mace's head is from the very first plastic Chaos Warriors kit, the head is from the 40k Chaos Lord in Terminator Armour. I'm still debating whether to add that set's cloak as well...

    PAINTING/BASING:
Black basecoat, Adeptus Battlegrey edge highlights. The bone areas are Khemri Brown for a base, several thin coats of Bleached Bone, and a Skull white highlight.

STILL TO DO: Finish the mace. The blue on its head is still WIP, but I can't find a colour recipe I like... And maybe add a cloak and/or back banner.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: The FW mini was really great to work with, and I'm really happy with the pose and his facial expression!
Lows: Well, the unfinished power weapon effect on the mace does bug me a little. I think I'll need a few spare mixing pots to sort that out...

    NEXT MONTH:
I've just bought a Venerable Dreadnought, so probably that. With plasma cannon and heavy flamer...

PICS: They're a little washed out, unfortunately. Maybe I can get some better ones when the sun comes out.

Additionally, I have one question regarding the rebuying of Jokers: Do I need twice the amount of points in one month, or do I get it back if my army total reaches the points required for that month? My army now stands at 530 points (730 with the Master) at 150 points a month and this being the 5th month of completed painting (if I'm not mistaken), I'd be very close to my target 750 points. Would I get my Joker back then? Sorry for the complicated explanation. I'm pretty worn out from studying...

    Cheers,
    Monsterzonk

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 6 (JAN completed work & FEB WIP)

Ok. I know I'm a bit behind, but I've got my Astorath done this month at least and I'm working on my Librarian + Honour Guard, so hopefully I can stay in the running a bit longer. Diceroll: 1

MONTHLY TOTAL: 220 points (250 target)
TOTAL TO DATE: 500 points (1250 target)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 3

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
Blood Angels, special character, not much room for personal silliness.

    UNIT(S):
    Astorath the Grim

    BUILD/CONVERSION:

    Exactly as to specifications.

    PAINTING/BASING:

So, the standard red Astorath just looks creepy, and while black is pretty good I think the miniature calls for something more. So my plan was to do a bronze and sea green or green/blue Astorath as I think those colours go well together. I um:ed and aah:ed a bit whether the armour should be green-grey or the trimmings, and vice versa for the bronze. Eventually I decided on green-grey armour and bronze trimmings.

So, I painted the armour in VMC Light Green Blue, which looks far more saturated in the bottle than it does dried. Not exactly what I wanted, so I did a mix of 1 part Catachan Green to two parts VGC Imperial Blue, a drop of Vallejos Thinner Medium and some water and did a heavy wash over the whole model, including the metal parts which had been painted Brassy Brass.

Very nice, I thought. Re-highlight the armour with VMC LGB, the metal with Brassy Brass and a Mithril Silver/Brassy Brass mix.

But, this won't blend very well with the red of the Blood Angels, so I decided to paint the wings red. Many thinned layers of VMC Flat Red later (with a couple of thinned washes of Baal Red and a wash of thinned Badab Black), I thought it didn't fit very well with the rest of the model. A heavy catachan/imperial wash took care of that, and another thinned layer of Flat Red on top of that.

Then, much agonizing over whether the face is a face or a mask. I decided on a mask (due to the tubing and relatively flat features), and I thought it'd make a striking contrast in silver. So a few progressive mix of Chaos Black and Chainmail, and lastly Mithril Silver took care of that.

I originally thought the hair should be black, but I wanted to lighten up the model a bit so Astorath became blonde instead. I'm not exactly sure how I did the hair, it's on a base of Scorched Brown and Desert Yellow with some light washes and highlights with other colours.

The scrollwork is a VMC Sky Blue base, painted over with Kommando Khaki, given a heavy green/blue wash and then painted with thinned VGC Skull White with the "lettering" done with Chaos Black.

The wax seals are Imperial Purple with a Imperial Purple/VMC Ivory highlight and a Imperial Purple wash.

The bone on the axe is just a very random process involving Ivory, Chaos Black and some Gryphonne Sepia.

STILL TO DO: Varnishing, which isn't too interesting for you guys.

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
    Pretty fun miniature to paint.

No real lows, except for it taking way too long.

    NEXT MONTH:
If I get the Honour Guard done this week, possibly Sternguard.

TOTAL TO DATE: 399 POINTS (500 TARGET)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 1

    UNIT(S): 9 Ork Boyz

    HIGHS AND LOWS:
Highs: Quite happy with how the checks have come out on some of these guys
Lows: My point total for the month...

NEXT MONTH: The rest of the unit (which will mean I finally have a completely painted and based legal 40K army: HQ + 2 Troops )

BUILD/CONVERSIONS: The Longfangs are last edition minis with the metal weapons, although one of the heavy bolters is from the chaos sprue, The Whirlwinds, one is made from havoc launchers glued to a apocalypse command tank dealy, while the other has the command thing with the 2nd ed whirlwind attached. All the parts are magnetized so I can run whatever I like!

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 6 (JAN completed work & FEB WIP)

Give_me_a_d's All Things Chaos: January 2012

    Monthly Total: 105pts (100 Target)
    Total To Date: 457pts
    Jokers Played: 1

    Background/ Theme:
A growing warp rift has spawned a daemonic host and is beginning to attract Chaos marines

Unit: A Herald of Khorne 105pts

Build/ Conversion: A plastic bloodcrusher rider on the metal WoC lord's jugger

    Painting/ Basing:
Sprayed black then basecoated Charadon Granite and drybrushed Dwarf Bronze, this did most of the metal. The body of the jugger was then repainted granite and washed with Baal Red then highlighted with Scab Red, Red Gore then Blood Red. Various metal bits were highlighted with gold or painted chainmail and washed with black and green. The rider was undercoated white then basecoated Macharius Solar Orange and then Vomit Brown. Highlights were done with Bleached Bone and shading with Baal Red. Metal bits were done as per the jugger. Skulls and bits of sword were done from granite through Graveyard Earth, Kommando Khaki and Bleached Bone to white with some Devlan Mud for good measures, teeth and claws were done with Kommando Khaki then Bleached Bone and finally white. Eyes black with white dots, tongue Warlock Purple with Tentacle Pink highlight. Base – basecoated Caradon Granite, drybrushed Graveyard Earth then Kommando Khaki. Edged with Graveyard Earth.

Still to do: There must be something

Highs: I'm very pleased with a lot of this guy and I'm very pleased to have finally got him painted
Lows: Having to repaint bits because of rubbing bits of from having to holding the thing firmly as its metal and therefore much heavier than the plastic bloodcrusher. That and forgetting to do an army shot.

Next Month: Some 'zerkers or noise marines

Re: The Tale of 40k Painters 2011-2012 MONTH 6 (JAN completed work & FEB WIP)

    Dangermouse's Blood Angels: January 2012 (D6 roll = 4)

I've decided to ditch my Space Marine biker list in favour of a Blood Angels army, so here's my new monthly total. Will post my Land Raider this month, I didn't manage to finish the Dev Sgt in time, so here's a tank instead!
I've also added the banners to my dread, so for all those who saw him "naked" last month, here he is again in all his bling'd up glory.

Month 1: Joker - Did not enter.
Month 2: Joker - Did not enter.
Month 3: Libby in Terminator Armour - 145pts
    Month 4: Dreadnought - 105pts
    Month 5: Land Raider - 250pts

MONTHLY TOTAL: 250 POINTS (500 TARGET)
TOTAL TO DATE: 500 POINTS (750 TARGET)
    JOKERS PLAYED: 2

    BACKGROUND/THEME:
Mixed Blood Angels list, jump troops and termies.

    UNIT(S):
    Land Raider - 250pts

I know the Land Raider is a complete mess, but I got it off eBay for about £5, so it had already had several coats of paint before I resprayed it. Furthermore its previous owner had decided to "battle damage" it, which seemed to involve hacking at it randomly with a knife. The odd texture you can see above and to the right of the front white block is where I had to sand several layers of plastic down to remove the horrendous scratches it had. Sad times.
As such, I didn't bother spending a huge amount of time on it, since I wanted to get it done and painted to a vaguely acceptable standard, and it was never going to look particularly good anyway.

Next month I'll post my finished Devs, but I'm also planning on getting my Termies done, which should buy back one of my jokers.
