Sorry but it's another Vampire Counts log!

So where I live (and from my user name) I'm known as a big O&G player. I wanted a change and decided with the release of Vampire Counts recently that I'd have a go at them.

There are a few things you should know before you continue.

1/ I'm not the greatest at taking photos!
2/ I am obsessed with themed basing (and conversion to a lesser extent)
3/ I flit around from project to project so progress might not be as quick as some would like.

If you can put up with that then I promise we'll be raising the undead together for a good few months to come and I'll hopefully show you some neat ideas for conversions and basing of a Vampire Counts army.

Enough waffle newby I hear you scream get some pics posted!.....

first up my Vampire Lord on Zombie dragon. I removed the molded plastic rock type things and replaced them with an old tree as I decided early on that my force would be heavily themed in a graveyard setting.

A few shots of the Lord...

Fantastic! great basing, and I love the little bloody bits on the bat. I really like the weathering you've done on the armor, it gives the eye something to go too on the very red armor. My only gripe, and I think it's a photo issue and not a mini issue, is that there doesn't seem to be much contrast/shading on the vampire's face.

Thanks very much. The Vampires skin has been washed out on the pic, IRL I even went as far as to paint the veins on his temples then wash the skin colour over them they haven't shown up in the pics either.

    The next thing is ...........

    A ZOMBIE GIANT!!!

    and a corpse cart WIP....

That is a wonderful looking Zombie Dragon, I never really liked the "museum display" clean style of the 'Eavy Metal one, yours is much more of a horror (in a good way!). Looking forward to seeing more.

Yep, very nice basing and painting. The zombie dragon is particularly gruesome, with the rest of blood on its wings. Giant and corpse cart are excellent. I can't wait to see more of your work

Need to echo this, the basing is very pretty. Likewise the dragon looks a heap better than the GW one.

Thanks very much guys. Now onto the real basing and converting parts of this log!

First up a unit of 49 skellies (+1 necromancer).....

and next on the table a unit of 6 Crypt horrors. I changed these guys up a bit as I hate having models that are identical (especially when they're pretty large monsters in a small unit), so the main conversion was obviosuly the guy skulking from behind the statue of Morr, this used 2 different legs and as such left me with a pair of odd legs (anyone who has this kit knows what I mean). So I used the odd legs and some GS to make the guy on the back row stand on a gravestone. Then the central back row guy had his weapon removed and replaced with a bit of graveyard fencing (as it is mentioned in the army book entry). The front row are all straight out of the box.....

Love your Crypt Horrors, I'm currently putting a unit of these together and know exactly what you mean about the legs! Did you also find the choice of right arms quite restrictive too?

I have to say the photo of the Zombie Dragon doesnt do it justice, beautifully painted, I like the visceral style! You've made great use of unit fillers too, I'm always wary of doing this in case it looks out of place, but you've given me a bit of inspiration to try with my next Skeleton unit any maybe start a plog of my own!

Very nice plog! The dragon looks great, and the zombie giant is very nice (despite me being not fond of the plastic giant), well done! Seems you've made a good start with your ranked units as well, eager to see more!

    What a great blog
Hmm, one thing that made me curious is that zombie giant - Isn't it the one that Mika painted a while after the kit was released? It'd be cool to own some of his (or any masters) work, like some people like to have precious paintings or drawings in their collection. Or have you made a replica???

Re: Sorry but it's another Vampire Counts log!

That is the giant Mika did, I know because it was me that bought (and sold) it

Glad to see it's found it's way to what looks like will be a fantastic looking army!

Re: Sorry but it's another Vampire Counts log!

The Giant was bought from eBay a while back (not from 75hastings69 though IIRC, so it may have changed hands a few times) and is one of 2 what I would call "pro-painted" standard minis I own, I love looking at it and get a good deal of inspiration from it, it's nice to know eventually who the painter was, I just hope I can do it justice by making the rest of the army be worthy to be in its prescence.

Very nice work so far, the zombie dragon will make a great centrepiece and those unit fillers are beautifully executed. I will have to keep an eye on this one
