Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

Ok, after getting a rather good deal for a load of Terminators on the trading forums, I've decided to paint up a Deathwing army.

This will be my first truely loyalist army in my 10 year 40k career, but it's one I've wanted to create for a long time.

    So we begin...

    I will take this:

And turn it into a full-fledged Deathwing force. I'm aiming to collect the entire DA 1st Company and Inner Circle eventually for an Apocalypse game me and my flatmate have planned, but obviously that'll take time, so I'll concentrate on small chunks at a time.

I'm also aiming to use this project as a test of my painting skills, so it may take a while, but it'll be worth it. Like I said, this is a project I've been dreaming of for years now.

This is the first 1000 points I've got planned:

    Belial - with Lightning Claws

Deathwing Squad 'Deliverance' - with TH/SS, 2 x LC, Power Sword, Heavy Flamer, Narthecium

Deathwing Squad 'Retribution' - TH/SS, 2 x LC, Assault Cannon. Power Weapon

Deathwing Squad 'Heavenfall' - Assault Cannon, LC, Power Weapon

Dreadnought Raziel - Assault Cannon, Dread CCW, Heavy Flamer

Not sure how effective this'll be. I've got few test games this week to try it out. In the meantime, I'm off to buy some Dheneb Stone, Dark Angels Green and Boltgun Metal. More updates soon...

Looking forward to seeing how they turn out. Have you considered Cyclones for them? I like them better than the AssCan. Epic project, DW take a while to paint

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

Ok, not the best pictures by a long shot, but I'm in the process of packing to move flat, so I don't have a proper lighting setup at the moment.

I'm posting these up to get people's opinions on what they thinking of me using a 'dirty' colour scheme for the army. There are a few three reasons I need this opinion

    1. I'm no good at painting 'clean' armies (ones that look like they just stepped off parade), especially bone colour, but new new flatmates girlfriend, who is a commission painter has said she'll teach me to paint Deathwing if I want her to

    2. I imagine this force as having struggled through the worst of hell to accomplish their mission, like the depths of a Space Hulk or Spaceship, or the darkest corners of Imperial worlds where the Fallen may be hiding, but having never painted a worn and weathered bone colour before and having slightly bad eyesight, I need to double check it looks good if i go for this scheme

    3. These are the only two models I've painted so far. If there's revisions to the scheme to be done, best to do them before I carry on with the other 44 Terminators

So, yeah. Thoughts and opinions are very welcome guys

It's been a while, but I'm back. Unfortunately I've made very little progress on the Deathwing, but hopefully now I'm in my new place, the pace will pick up a bit.

For now, here's my WIP Deathwing Dreadnought

And I'll post more up very soon

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

I just stripped and redid a unit of DW for my DA. I found after a heavy wash with Devlan Mud, I gave them a heavy dry brush with Dheneb Stone. They still look plenty grimy, but more of a bone colour than brown. Added bonus was that the aquilas ended up with a highlight of stone so a quick coat of Dark Angels Green and they ended up already highlighted.

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

Ok, now that my uni exams are over, i can focus on 40k again

With the rise of 6th ed, there's never been a better time to focus on Deathwing. Having had plenty of time to ponder my colour scheme, I've decided to scrap the old scheme and break out the Fairy Power Spray. Having given them a long saok, then scrub with an old toothbrush, I'm handing them over to my friend who owns an airbrush and has offered to help me out with the basecoats and speed up the process.

Here's the entirety of my Daethwing, crated up and ready for said friend to collect in the morning.

Once the Dheneb Stone base has been applied, my rate of finishing models should pick up considerably, which is lucky, considering how many Termies there are to paint. I aim to have them done by the end of the summer, ready to hit the tabletop when i return to uni at the end of September (they run a gaming society Tuesday evenings).

In fact the trickiest thing I see ahead of me is freehanding the Deathwing banner for Belials command squad.

    More soon folks....

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

Today was scorching hot, so I decided to sit in the garden, enjoy some music and get some painting done, seeing as my friend has finally returned with the airbrushed Terminators

This is how they were returned to me. Note the three blue ones which are Librarians, one for each discipline I'm planning to use.

As I sat down to paint, armed with a paintbrush, an ice-cold beer and Bob Marley on the stereo, they looked something like this...

A few hours later, I'd made quite a bit of progress. I've decided only to tackle two squads at a time, to keep my morale up (I have 46 of them to paint after all)

As you can see, they're nowhere near done yet, but I'm taking my time with them. I'm hoping to do a good enough job on them to be my display army, so detail and care is being lavished on each and every one of them

Since taking these pics, I've applied a further Gryphonne Sepia to the Crux Terminatus, followed by Badab Black, dulling them down nicely and stopping them from being the dominant feature of the models. I'm wondering whether a Gryphonne Sepia wash into the armour crevasses and joints would be a good idea or not. I might pick a model I don't like so much and give it a try.

    What do you guys think?

Nice progress. I look forward to seeing this army finished. All those therminators should look really cool.

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

No progress on the Terminators but I've written up an army list to work to, so I can get enough done for a game as quickly as possible (I'm not fielding any unfinished models, so I've got a good reason to keep at it)

Strike Force 'Redemption' - 1000 points

    Belial

    Lightning Claws

    Librarian Akalzion

    Terminator Armour, Divination

    Deathwing Squad Belial

1 x Lightning Claws, 1 x TH/SS, Apothecary with Lightning Claws, Heavy Flamer, Chainfist

    Deathwing Squad 'Heavenfall'

2 x Lightning Claws, 1 x TH/SS, Heavy Flamer, Chainfist, Seargent has Power Sword

    Deathwing Squad 'Vengeance'

Assault Cannon, 1 x Lightning Claws, 1 x TH/SS, Sergeant has Power Sword

Very simple and yet to be playtested but it gives me a goal to work towards. Once that lot is painted up, I'll write the next 1000pts, which will probably include a pair of Mortis Contemptors. I know vehicles don't do well under 6th Ed but the models are just too cool not to include. They'll also give me some nice anti-flyer capacity, which the army is seriously lacking right now.

I'm also dusting off an old project I started a while back, but then abandoned. I'll probably end up finishing that as well, but not field often. Not saying what it is just yet, but watch this space....

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

    ...and the mystery is solved!

I found this old Land Raider while unpacking my hobby stuff, having just moved into a new flat. It's left over from my first, failed attempt at Deathwing about 2-3 years ago. I sold off the majority of it after getting depressed at my abysmal ability to paint bone, but kept the Land Raider back because I liked the freehand I'd started on it.

While the tank itself needs a bit of work, missing both the front and side hatches, a simple order from Forge World should solve that issue. I feel the painting can be brought up to scratch quite easily with my vastly improved painting abilities these days. Sure, it's the only freehand I've ever attempted, but I like a challenge

If I get some time over the next few days, I'll spend some time on this and let you know how I get on...

Water down the colours alot more. Many layers. And carefully blend the colours.

Anyways nice freehanding. Washes are a really good tip to use on metallics colours.

Re: Never Forget, Never Forgive - a Deathwing Army

Got a little more done, applying a light Gryphonne Sepia wash to my first squad, which is also going to be Belial's command squad (you can see the Apothecary in the middle with the white Reductor hand)

They're coming along nicely now, although there's still a lot to do. Now the basics are done, I'm planning on turning my full attention to one terminator at a time, so I can make sure each one is perfect before moving on to the next one.

Here's the first one: Brother Zariel of Squad Belial

Brother Zariel has seen active service with the Dark Angels for more than a century, although only two of decades of that has been in the service of the Deathwing. Since his induction into the Inner Circle however, he has proven himself to be a valuable asset, earning promotion to Master Belial's personal squad within a few short years. He possesses a keen, analytical mind that has served him equally well whether in pursuit of a Fallen or where best to ram his claws into an enemy of the Imperium.

Note that his right-hand lightning claw has sustained damage, caused during the hunt for the Akelzion, a member of the Fallen of some infamy. At the height of the battle for Fanrax's Reach Zariel cornered the traitor and engaged him in personal combat. Over the course of the fight the claw glanced off his foe's breastplate, damaging them and causing him to stumble . The mis-blow allowed Akelzion the opportunity to activate a personal teleporter and escape, a failure that haunts Zariel to this day. As result of this, he has vowed not to repair the damage to his weapon until it has sliced through Oriol's neck, an oath he has taken most seriously. 5 years have passed since that day, yet the claw remains in the same state, despite the pleading of the chapters Techmarines.

Zariel's nearly done but there's still details to finish, such as his left eye lense, the Deathwing symbol on his shoulder pad and a few odds and ends, as well as a Badab Black wash for the metallic areas (I need to find someone who still has a pot to sell me some)

The wings on his shoulders are from the DA upgrade sprues, otherwise he's a standard Lightning Claw Terminator. He still needs basing, but I'm waiting until the entire squad's done before doing that, so I can create a united basing scheme for them.

    More soon....
