Warcraft themed Undead

So a while ago I grabbed up the idea of making a Vampire Counts armed based on the Undead Scourge from Warcraft. Most of the units fit naturally from one another and of course who else could lead the army but (Vampire Lord) Arthas Menethil?



then I went through the army list and easy enough Ghouls = Ghouls, Lich = Master Necromancer, Terrorgheist = Sapphiron, Crypt Horror = Abomination and so on, until I reached Varghulf. Now, there's not much stuff Varghulf sized in the Scourge, and certainly not very attacky as opposed to resilient. Then came, Anub'arak...

6 Abomination/Crypt Horrors
4 Death Knights/Blood Knights

I can only say: it's about time! I think it's a great theme that should have been used more, and the transition from one setting to the other should be almost flawless.

Many thanks for the praises! And although I should keep my secret hidden, the Crypt Lord is a almost-cheating conversion of this guy...

Tyrant Guard & a lot of green stuff.
The body is pretty much perfect, and the legs are alright too as they are, although really I should re-do the front legs to match the rear.

1. Resculpt scythes to be a little longer and add the bandage wrapping.
2. Roll a huge ball onto the back, using the Guard's tail as an anchor, then slowly pull the back end of the ball out into a beetleback shape.
3. Cover the boney underneath of the Guard with more chitin plates.
4. Completely resculpt the face - except the teeth - to add the horns and the egyptian style 'beard' thing.
5. Finally cover the neck and fleshy top body with the egyptian style 'headdress'.
6. Assemble! It's important to leave this until last, as it's difficult to get to the underneath of the Tyrant Guard with the arms on.

I'd like to add a couple of see-through wings like in this picture as well, have a couple of ideas on how to incorporate them (plastic wallets, harden with PVA glue... done?)

I would have thought an infernal would make a good varghulf but it's nice to see the crypt lord get some love! He was always my favourite hero in the undead faction. Also I think Heinrich Kemmler would be a good choice for your lich with his ethereal and lore master special rules. Also a ghoul king with Skabscrath and flight would be ideal for a Dreadlord, the ranged attack representing his carrion swarm.

StormCrow - To be honest, I completely forgot Infernals existed until you mentioned them now and besides they're in thrall to Archimonde and as such, are below my Undead goodness, a Dreadlord I'm willing to make however, and a flying Strigoi Ghoul King would fit a certain Balnazzar anyway. I also intend to build a certain resurrected Elf Ranger-General too... Heinrich Kemmler would suit ruleswise to ol' Kel'Thuzad too, I'd thought Mannfred was a bit too powerful in combat to work.

Anyway! Here's a very poor photo showcasing rough size comparison for my counts-as Crypt Horror Abominations next to a mantic Skeleton WarriorTrust me the sculpting isn't quite as bad as this photo suggests, and it's a base body anyway

Now clearly, it's not as huge as the Abominations in WC3 or WoW, but this needs to fit on 40mm bases like Crypt Horrors do so they've had to be descaled to about Ogre sized, I might make an extra special big one later on in the process.

No update on the Abom yet, but I just had an idea.

Now, I like the Mortis Engine rules but frankly the model is a bit too going on for my taste, so I essentially kicked it out of my ideas.
Until I remembered these guys; Obsidian Statues

What do you think? It's basically a Necrosphinx on a platform painted black, conversion-wise, and the rules kindof fit - the Statue heals allies, the Mortis Engine grants Regen.

Sorry it's been a while guys, my sculpting skills (from scratch, at least) are lacking so I've been waiting on a box of Ogres to bulk out into Abominations.

Suffice to say I've at least worked on something else, and while not entirely representative of Death Knights, they do look amazing;






Some work to be done filling in chaos symbols with green stuff and filing down extra spikes but overall they look great. They'll be painted in dark purples and blues rather than the usual Blood Knight red, to distinguish the face that they are indeed Death Knights. I just need one more of these Vampire Lord models, then it's a unit! Then I can move on to make a mounted Arthas as well - I've already started on a more faithful Frostmourne for him.

I'm not familiar with the Warcraft games but I must say I really like your models. The mounted vampire is great.

My Skeletons are indeed Mantic's ones (you can see one in the pic with the Abomination starter.) they're much cheaper and look just as good, if different in proportions. Although sadly GW's Ghouls do look more like Warcraft's Ghouls (which is a pain, as I really dislike the GW Ghouls), but there we go.

Now, because I'm an impatient sod that can't wait for my Green Stuff/Ogre delivery, I've started painting my tester Knight and, the great thing with cameras is they make your mistakes much more obvious than in reality. Ehh, I have the excuse that it isn't finished yet at least

I Like the idea of a Warcraft themed VC army, I’ll be interested to see what u come up with.

The Blood knights are awesome. Out of curiosity what did u make them out of? It looks like u have used Chaos knights horses, and the legs, head, body, lance/sword and shield from the Zombie Dragon kit.

Bang on on the bits guessing there, it's just Chaos Knight mounts with the Vampire Lord on Dragon's Lord bits.

Anyway, more photos. I've been distracted by a new Skaven army I'm starting having just recieved the Island of Blood bits the other week, but I've managed to mostly finish a single Blood Death Knight;



Still struggling to be happy with the horse's flesh as I'm trying to make it look whole but dead. But eh, I've had other things to paint also...

The Dreadlord Varimathras (who needs his delivery of Tyranid Gargoyle wings), as much as I'd like to use him as a Strigoi Ghoul King he can't fit in my 2,500 list so he gets to be the Ghoul unit champion for now.



and Sapphiron, the Frost Wyrm, who needs his ice on his base. Again, a Lord on Zombie Dragon doesn't fit in my 2,500 list so Sapphiron gets used as a counts-as Terrorgheist for now.

After a rather long time - something of an update;

I scrapped my scratchbuild Abominations, and instead bought a box of Ogres - much of their bodies I can use, and it will let me use my green stuffing skill to add details and Scourge-ify them rather than building from nothing.
I've also got me some proper GW Grave Guard to replace my Mantic Revenants, as people were getting confused with the similarities between Revenants and Skeletons - so they'll be up here soon as well.

But, to keep you going until then, Arthas has a new sword - somewhat more reminiscent of Frostmourne;



and with some of his soon-to-be-replaced retinue, who will simply become another Skeleton unit. Although I must say, I like the scale difference in this unit - really makes Arthas stand out.
