Mantic Tournament What was Hot and what was not.......

Back from the eye of the storm and had to say, what a weekend!!!!!!!

    What was Hot!

The people, who were all friendly,
Meeting the Boss, who was friendly and down to earth,
Meeting Alessio who had time to listen to your thoughts, whoever you were,
    Playing Project Pandora!!!! Just epic,
Playing 6 games of Kings of War, a fast and brutal game,
    The staff at Maelstrom Games,
    The venue,
Playing the 3 up version of Dwarf kings hold,
    Seeing some well painted armys
The Lass behind the bar who did an epic job of serving 30 odd very thirsty Wargammers.
    Tim and Chris, Great organisers.
Getting to go 1st at least once¬!!!!
Our names will be in the New rule book!!!!!!
    The Evil Spaniard award

    What was not

Mantic staff coming in the top 3 (2 with total cheese lists, not the Ork one), new challenge, to topple these guys!!!!
The drive back home (through centre of Birmingham)
Craig sleeping in his car due to a friend letting him down!
Cannon actually hitting, not fun being on the receiving end of that!

Ok so it was in the brief to try and break the game, but surely if you work at Mantic you just point these things out to Alessio before hand....... Doh..

Did they claim any prizes or defer them to non-Mantic staff?

A playtesting tournament where even the mantic staff are trying to break the lists and powergame?

Is that really what it was (sorry I know nothing of this)?

If so, it will surely be good for the balance in the long run that they do this kind of stuff! I can see how it would be a little bit of a drag to play against some of the lists, but by the sounds of it I guess that was kind of the point...

If I have understood what happened correctly, thanks for suffering the 'cheese' so that the rest of us don't have to after they fix the lists!

Awesome stuff, would be very interested about your comments on Project Pandora! Very similar to Dwarf King's Hold? What are the models etc. like?
‘General! Your warriors were the eaters of cities, lord, but with you to command us the War Hounds will be the eaters of worlds!’ For a moment Angron Swayed, his eyes and fists closed. But then he looked at Dreagher, from there to Khârn. And he smiled. ‘World Eaters,’ he said, slowly, tasting the sounds. ‘World Eaters. So you shall be, then, little brothers...’

Played the 1st opening intro game of project Pandora. The game is fast, simple, but tactical at the same time. Not complicated at all. Two minutes in and I was sending wave after wave of the 8th race into the guns, which were running out of ammo.
I would say it is similar in mechanics with DKH

If you like Space Hulk, I think you should like this. Have ordered mine!

Absolutely this! It is very encouraging to hear, that the staff itself doesn't fear to play a little bit competitive. How else can you test your rules for loops and holes? And the end result shows it. A balanced and smooth ruleset you can always enjoy in a laid back way, but can also use to play a little bit more competitive without having to fear unfair setups. Also

The same experiences I had during the "Spiel 2011" at Essen. I hope someone from Mantic is reading this as it cannot be praised and thanked for enough. To have the Boss and Rule designer to listen to you patiently. Always something to raise your enthusiasm for the hobby.

Now please tell us what Army Mr. Renton used ^^

Sounds like a good weekend. What were your thoughts on the 8th race models? As good as the corp?

Re: Mantic Tournament What was Hot and what was not.......

Ronnie didn't play but Chris, Alessio, Tim, Josh and Alberto all did.

Josh had a very broken TK list. Gargoyles will be fixed! Fair play though... the rules let him take the list
Alberto had and equally cheesy Kingdoms of (rat)men army (aka skaven counts as humans). 14 warmachine gun line with all other units (tons of cheap militia and engineers) acting as mobile terrain to stop anyone getting to the guns.

They came first and second respectively.

What was great was was the Q&A and feedback session after each game where we could all discuss rules and issues and how to resolve them. I think the hardback book will have most things ironed out now.

Thanks to all my opponents and everyone for being great. Thanks too obviously to Mantic for putting on a fabulous weekend.

I've also got tons of gossip and rumours but I'll have to check what I'm allowed to say!

We didn't get to see them. I only saw the Corporation troopers today.

When we played Pandora we were using a tile set which was not the real ones and were using FF and Marauder proxies.

Unless you signed a form we demand you spill the beans, or there may be blood!

Good to hear everyone had a great time. I would have loved to be there If they run one next year I'm going to go for sure!

"The Lass behind the bar who did an epic job of serving 30 odd very thirsty Wargammers"

    Thats Terri and she's lovely

Had a great time playing these fellas over the weekend - 6 great games with 3 wins, 2 draws....and.......and Josh and then talking to Alessio about what we thought was broken etc during several Q & As.

Whats nice about this system is that it works well and the 'Broken' stuff is just 'niggles' i.e. army list/unit cost balancing along with some tweaking of the way cannons work and discussed ways to 'dissude' individual characters from blocking units.....and Gargoyles

Oh and I beat SneakyChris even if I bottled the Dragon vs Dragon Fight (Unlucky mate) not that Im bragging or being smug about it...oh no.....

Funniest moment for me was flame attacking a cannon with my dragon - rolling 15 dice to hit and wound etc......my opponent (having momentarily turned away just as I rolled) asks "How many wounds did you cause?" to which I respond "......I dont want to talk about it...lets move on to the melee phase"

Played the new Project Pandora game - not bad - only played a small demo mission with proxy parts and models etc (the game is still being made in China) so could not form a real opinion but still had a few run throughs and the rules work well.

Matt and I then thrashed out a modern/sci-fi Skirmish system on the way home between the M25 and LA (Littlehampton)....which we might write up and play test......
There are no Wolves on Fenris....

Well at least the Twilight Sorceress managed to breathe on it to finish it off!!!!! And how was I ever supposed to win against those close combat archers?

Not a KoW one for tweaking the rules. Once the book is out this year they'll not go back to the core rules for a couple of years while they concentrate on the supporting model range and other systems.

They will continue to run tournaments though. And if you fancy playing in something that will provide feedback to the warpath rules, keep your eyes and ears open for news

@SneakyChris.. which Chris are you? About 1/3 of the people were called Chris!

Ah yes the deadly Elf Archers charging sword Dancers - a dirty tactic to be sure (in truth nothing more than a speed bump as it turned out!)

And someone needs to mention the words 'dental hygene' to that sorcerous
