Hairy's 2012 Plog - Kill Teams, Space Wolves & World of Twilight

    Hi all,

Well another year another thread. Progress will be in fits and starts this year, not only do I have a load of DIY projects to finish from last year but also this years DIY projects (attic room and garden landscaping). On top of that we had Master Hairy born this year (the little tike's just over 2 weeks old) so don't go expecting lots of updates on a regular basis.

Never one to sit idle I am also writing a set of rules for one company (sorry can't give anything away yet), fluff for another new game (again can't say anything yet), writing the Travelogue for World of Twilight and on top of all this I am slowly working away on my own games system.

For those of you eager for pics you can always have a butchers at my 2011 plog though it kinda stalled for various reasons.

So what projects for 2012 I hear you ask. One of the big (but slow) projects for the year is the overhaul of my Space Wolves from Bran Redmaw's Great Company. I say overhaul but what I am currently thinking of is stripping the whole lot, breaking them down into bits and starting again. Two reasons for my madness, first the Forge World Bran rules in Imperial Armour 11 and the other because I just don't like the paint scheme, I know I can do better.

Another big project for this year is to paint up my World of Twilight figures. I have a small group of Devanu painted up already, I still have my Fubarnii militia and knights as well as a stables. I am thinking of making some Twilight themed scenery too but first things first.

To start 2012 I am going to begin with a small project...Kill Team! I am trying to encourage my LGC to create a new Kill Team force from a race they don't normally play. We then kick seven shades out of each other, the results of each game earning points so once every has played everyone else then we should have a victor. We are going to use 3 missions; the Kill Team missions itself, Sabotage (one team trying to blow up another's objective) and Retrieval (both sides attempting to recover a data core from a crashed ship). I have notes on the basic setting etc so just need to compile them and finish writing & playtest the last mission.

So far all the bits for my shiny new Kill Team are in a box but here's something for starters...

    Part 1 - Dispatches
The rattle echoed out across the chamber, greeted only by a hushed silence from the assembled figures hidden in the shadows. The helmet came to a rest in the centre of the hall, the head rolling free revealing a face drained of the last vestiges of it’s life. The silent ghost faced warrior returned to his statue-like vigil, slicing the long violent blade back to its resting place.

At the head of the chamber an enthroned figure breathed deeply, eyes closed as the victim’s soul sent shivers of pleasure through their ancient frame. “Apology…accepted”

The tension of the audience chamber eased as each member of the court saw their chance, the atmosphere became electric as alliances and political back stabbing erupted across the collected Dark Kin as each stated their intentions in a complicated series of gestures, glances and psychic whisperings.

On his midnight black throne of onyx Archon Sellissan sat surrounded by the leering faces of the souls he had personally harvested, each carved by enslaved artisans from his Craftworld cousins. The unspoken negotiations of the shadowed court instantly ceased as he delicately raised his hand.

“I require only a message. Is this too much to ask?”

The silent factions hidden in the shadows of the auditorium each waited for the others to stake their claim, their right to such a task. None were willing to make the mistake of acceptance too readily.

Swift as a diving raptor the marbled stone of the court was impaled by a cruel spear; slicing the scheming courts reverie. The scourge fell with a piercing screech to grasp the spear haft with its taloned feet, wings enveloping its deceptively frail form. Hateful eyes stared from the dark as the others bristled at such a break in etiquette. The Solarite ignored such impertinence, her eyes focused solely on the dais.

    “I claim this undertaking.”

With a powerful beat of it's wings the vulture-kin leapt skyward, plucking it’s deadly blade from the cracked marble, vanishing into the gloom.

Congrats on the new warrior in the family, may he spill much blood!

My painting slowed quite a bit after our girl was born but I still manage to get a bit done. Hope you can also.

Look forward to this years offerings.

Re: Hairy's 2012 Plog - Kill Teams, Space Wolves & World of Twilight

A small update for the weekend, I've built the Kill Team; 3 Scourges with Shardcarbines, 1 Scourge with a Dark Lance and another with a Splinter Cannon and a Solarite with a Splinter Pistol and an Agoniser. My specialists are the Solarite with Furious Charge and the Dark Lance Scourge with Relentless.

Bog standard construction here just posing. I did a tiny conversion on the Solarite, just slicing off a small chuck from the shoulder to alter the position of the arm holding the pistol. I had intended to magnetise the heavy weapons and the Solarites armament in case I wanted to change them; fitting the magnets was relatively easy but getting the arms to line up was a pain in the ass. I realised the connections would be too fragile so I gave up and just glued the arms in place. If I want to change armaments in future I will just have to grab another box and make up the alternatives configs.

I had hoped to have them undercoated and with at least the first coat on by now but alas a young son with his first cold has kinda slashed our sleep. Still I should hopefully get some undercoat on him before Master Hairy's bath time

I might even get a chance to start the two objectives as well...will just have to see.

P.S. Oh yeah, my collection of Space Wolf bits is slowly growing in preparation for my new Bran Redmaw list. I ordered some of those lovely Werewolf bits from Puppets of War but unfortunately a load of the fingers were broken off. I've contacted customer services so hopefully it can be resolved soon then once these Scourges are done I can start building...hopefully...

I finally started painting the Scourges but not much to report so far...however I do have the second part of their tale, enjoy...

    Part 2 - Conveyance
A foul and heavy atmosphere settled over the forest as the wind roused the tall, broad-leaved trees to sway rhythmically. Shadows emerged from the gloomy depths, their pustulant aura spreading the creeping decay ever further. As they passed into a light-dappled glade the shadowed hulks became clear, five armoured giants stood surveying their surroundings; enhanced vision penetrating the forest’s depths yet unable to identify the threat they could all feel was present.

Swift and sure a wickedly sharp spear, charged with eldritch energy, impaled one renegade marine against the trunk of a great tree. The quivering shaft seemed to grow forth from the giant’s own throat, mercilessly penetrating their progenoid gland. The rest of the patrol’s reaction was instant; four boltguns greeted the sudden death of their comrade. Controlled fire patterns swept the forest and canopy for vengeance, yet no target was found.

In the hushed silence that followed, unseen attackers flitted amongst the trees, drawing lines of sight as they surrounded their foes.

The darkness of the forest was suddenly burnt away in blinding light accompanied by the tell tale slicing of air from splinter darts. In one instant, death reached out from afar and three plague marines fell, collapsing to their knees with holes burnt through their torsos or their armour pierced by a cloud of splinters. The lone chaos marine backed cautiously against the bough of a mighty tree and opened fire on full auto, hosing the canopy in a deadly hail of explosive bolter rounds.

The chaos marine roared his defiance until his last magazine was spent then fluidly discarded the empty weapon for his bolt pistol. Using ancient teachings and prayers to his diseased father he settled himself and scanned the silent woods.

A lance of burning light melted through his pistol in a second, setting off the explosive rounds that vapourised his gauntleted fist. Spitting dark curses, he drew forth his poisoned blade with his last good hand.

In a few silent beats of his twisted hearts the canopy exploded as a lithe creature dived for her prey. The raptor lashed out with an agonising strike that coiled itself around the plague marine’s knife hand; searing pain shot up his arm as his remaining hand was burnt clean off, cauterising the wound instantly.

The Solarite landed next to the fallen marine as he writhed in pain. With a practiced flick of her wrist the agoniser uncoiled itself and returned its long tendrils to her grasp.

The prone warrior’s crudely painted skull helm stared blankly as the winged Dark Eldar bowed with a flourish.

“My Master offers you greetings”, she said with a hint of irony, “he accepts the proposal of the Sorceror you call Kalsharn and bids you to bare his goodwill to your master…”

Only a cold loathing greeted the Solarite’s words.

“…but first there will be pain.” A wicked glint sparkled in her eye as she stalked closer to her fallen ‘comrade.’

Sorry Juicy, you will have to wait a little longer before the Solarite is finished, though the whole team is nearly finished.

I do have an update though, behold the objectives!

A crashed Venom complete with a Data Core counter for the Retrieval mission and a Dark Eldar Comms Array for the Sabotage mission. I will be painting these in a fairly classic Dark Eldar colour scheme, unlike my Scourges.

I have also been slowly stock-piling bits for my new SW force; I'm very excited about this as I have lots of plans. Before that though I think I will add a splash of colour to Galan Quaterbane from Warploque Miniatures and Fubarnii knights from World of Twilight...oh and their barracks. First things first though...

Re: Hairy's 2012 Plog - Kill Teams, Space Wolves & World of Twilight

I finished these guys a week or so ago but what with relies visiting it took me a while to take the picks. Behold the Void Ghosts...

    And a group shot...

I wanted to do something different with these chaps and chapettes from the usual Dark Eldar look. I like how they have turned out. I still need to paint up the objectives which I will probably do as part of Aprils Tail of Skirmish painters. For these I plan on tying them in colourwise but going down a more typical Dark Eldar gloomy colour scheme.

I have also been busy building Enuk Knights for the World of Twilight and Galan Quarterbane from Warploque Miniatures. Once these guys are all pinned together I need to do a spot of GS work then the painting can start.

I have also been playing with dying my Citadel crease-free gaming cloth to get rid of its luminosity. I used it as a background in the pics above and I think it worked well.

    Cheers Basher!

Things have been a bit a bit slow this month as have been busy doing the whole new born thing but I have managed to paint up some objectives for my Dark Eldar Kill Team; they are nearly done so not much point in posting WIP pics. I have also been putting together my Enuk Knights and a Pree Pree for the World of Twilight as well as Galan Quaterbane from Warploque.

I should hopefully be painting these chaps next month.

I popped to Salute and managed to grab a fair few bits, a sizeable Dhogu force (3 Yirnak riders, 6 spears, 2 Trappers, 2 Skerrats, 2 bows) and some other minis (2 Kosok, a Devanu Spear, a Gushrak and a load of random bits for terrain building) for World of Twilight as well as some more bits for my Fire Fight forces. I also got some the last bits I needed for my new Space Wolf army...just need the time to build & paint them. We also picked up other figs for me to paint up a Bushido Dragon for our new son and a MicroArt Death for the wife. Hopefully these will get painted up over the coming months.

With the start of the new month I have the minis I've been painting for the Tale of Skirmish painters...

Here be my objectives for my Dark Eldar Scourge Kill Team - the objectives are a crashed venom with data core counter for a Retrieval mission and a comms array for a Sabotage mission. Here's the objectives with the Kill Team.

This month I will be painting Galan Quarterbane from Warploque Miniatures and hopefully Enuk Knights of the Fubarnii for World of Twilight. I might make a start on the stables/barracks for the knights too.

I really like the scheme you've used for your Dark Eldar. It's bright & vivid without being over the top or cartoony. Its mostly from the lighting, but I cant actually tell if the armor is Metallic, NMM, or what. I'd like to see more.

    Thanks guys!

The armour isn't metallic or NMM, its a bone colour and didn't really take too long. Apart from the turquoise bits everything is bone coloured with various washes.

I started Galan yesterday and should be doing a bit more tonight, hopefully he will be finished by the end of the long weekend but we will see.

I forgot to finish off the story for the Void Ghosts but have finally managed to get it completed...

    Part 3 - Peroration
“The size of your failure is only exceeded by your arrogance!” roared Archon Sellissan glaring down from his carved onyx throne. Palpable waves of menace rippled out across the chamber, sending chills of both fear and excitation amongst the assembled court, veiled in the darkness of the chambers edge. Only one figure stood aloof and unbroken by the weight of barbed threats, seemingly exposed in the centre of the auditorium, the lone Solarite appeared oblivious to the raging Archon and the court that withdrew from his presence.

“Your lust for inflicting pain does you credit but all desires must be tempered by the will of your lord, your master. Your lack of subtlety has…complicated my plans to ruin the bitch queen. For this arrogance there will be a price,” the Archon paused and the surrounding bodyguard shifted almost imperceptibly, a gentle move yet all present knew the threat hidden in the simple gesture.

“You are now mine,” Sellissan closed his gloved fist in emphasis. The Solarite seemed indifferent; the Archon smirked at such a feeble attempt at defiance.

Satisfied that all knew and understood his judgement Sellissan took the Solarite’s silence as recognition of his power.

“There is a task I have for you…”

In a blur of movement the Solarite leapt forwards, diving at the Archon in a stim-fuelld strike that saw them fly backwards through a delicate glass window; shattered shards surrounding them in a glittering vision of slicing death, accompanied by the shrieking of the guard’s weapons in a futile attempt to protect their lord.

Barrelling through the twinkling cacophony the Solarite soared skywards with her prey firmly in her grasp. Sellissan could only roar in defiance and frustration, knowing full well that his life was now in the clutches of this winged delinquent. The roar began to form into a single word, “Why?”

With an intent stare the winged avenger slowed, hovering high over the yawning chasm that fell to the depths of the city and stared deep into the eyes of her catch, “My Lady bid me bring you this message….”

Grinning violently the Solarite let go, watching the late Archon Sellissan plunge headlong into the abyss of Commorragh.
Galan is coming along slowly but hopefully he should be finished soon...ish.

    O Hairy of Norse.

Most excellent fluff, sir! I like muchly.

Might I also compliment you on the wings of your Scourges - they are very nicely done. Maybe give us a few more photos of your painted stuff?

Considering how difficult I find it to get motivated these days I'm thinking Killteams are the way to go... I will continue to follow with interest

    Cheers Jihad Ragsta!

More pics? How about these links to some photobucket albums sir...World of Twilight...Warcanto...Carcharodons and I'm also doing the Tale of Skirmish Painters.

I think the Kill Team missions is so much fun to play and I love the fact that you can play a different army or race without having to spend loads on the minis. I'm not planning on doing more Kill Teams at the mo but I do have plenty of ideas for more...just need to find the time. I do have a load of bits that I'm going to use to build some teams for a home brew set of rules called The Jade Cluster - A Sci-Fi setting with a frontier feel. First though I need to continue with my Twilight bits as I'm doing a Tale of Painters on their forum.

    Merci Purple Beard!

Right I have finally managed to paint something...first up is Galan Quarterbane from Warploque Miniatures.

Next is a PreePree (think a hand bag dog basically) from World of Twilight.

My nephew is over this weekend and we are going to have a painting day so I can show him some basic techniques so I will be making a start on my Fubarnii knights from World of Twilight...fingers crossed I get them done this week...

Re: Hairy's 2012 Plog - Kill Teams, Space Wolves & World of Twilight

Things have been a little slow of late in the painting department but I finish work at the end of next week so fingers crossed things should speed up. My enuk knights for World of Twilight are too far off being finished and I have started a DIY bastion for 40k and should be starting a barracks for my enuk knights next week too.

I have a few minis to finish then I want to start kit-bashing my new Space Pups! They may grow into a big long term project so I may start a new thread for them. I am especially looking forward to adding some allies but will have to build a fair few points first.

I have my first 6th ed game coming up on Tuesday so fingers crossed I kick some Ork butt!
