    Red Death...Necrons (revived 02/2013)

I got a start on an ever growing Necron army. I'm more of a gamer than a painter, but I still enjoy a nice looking army. It has been a while since I have worked on any major painting projects after finishing most of my Chaos about a year ago. Mostly everything has been assembled minus a few odds and ends.

What I have assembled so far...

    3 Annihilation Barges
    3 Ghost Arks
    25 Warriors
    6 various Crypteks
    4 Necron Lords/Overlords
    Stormlord
    9 Scarabs
    10 Immortals
    C'tan Shard (Nightbringer)

I decided to go with a red color scheme over the standard green. I did like the approach GW with their Khemri look but I wanted a different color. To start things out, I chose an annihilation barge since it is a medium sized model. I do use an airbrush a lot so a lot of my paints are brands you'd find in a craft store due to cost. Mixed with testor's airbrush thinner and water there's no issue. The barge was coated dark burgundy over black. Using heavy drybrushing, I applied a darker crimson red then drybrushed a coat of brighter crimson. Highlighting was done with vallejo blood red. The metallics are pretty standard, using black ink on the boltgun instead of devlin mud to go with a more oily appearance. I did some quick cleanup and applied vallejo matte varnish after this picture was taken. Basing is still TBD. I'm leaning towards a dark grey ash waste with green crystals. Making the crystals green on the bases would draw out some the rest of the model for a good balance.

Though not my original idea, I've been working on a Harbinger of Despair (Veil of Darkness). The staff was taken from a few parts pinned together. The upper half a is a deathmark rifle connected by the blade from a warscythe. The lower handle is from a hyperphase sword. The spine comes from the lychguard box

That's a nice looking scheme you got there. Would be nice for some close ups and more angles but from what's there it looks pretty tidy.

Green crystals sounds like a great idea. Looking forward to seeing how they come out

I like the red and gold, looks very imposing and regal at the same time.

Thank you for the comments. My immortals are getting some paint today. It feels nice to have an army that's relatively easy to paint. (excluding arks lol)

Got some basic coats on the immortals. They should be finished tomorrow. The picture was sent with my phone to save time.

I really like your paint scheme, and it's really well-executed. There's a similar scheme in the Necron codex (top of page 69), and it's my favorite in the entire book, so I look forward to seeing where this is going.

Thank you. The immortals did not get finished unfortunately. My back issues decided to pay me a visit this week which makes my muscles really tight. My hands get really unsteady as my arms are trying to resist the tight strain on my shoulder area. I did manage to finish the boltgun areas and I am slowly working on the blue areas.

An 1850 list has been finalized for our local league and when painted, their first tournament. The immortals are receiving more paint today. Unfortunately I'm able to get about 15-20 minutes of work done at a time before breaking due to my back doh.

    Stormlord

    Nemesor Zahndrekh

    5 Crypteks
    4 Harbinger of Destruction
    Solar Pulse
    1 Harbinger of Eternity
    Chronometron

    17 Warriors
    1 Necron Lord
    Warscythe
    MSS
    1 Harbinger of Storm
    Lightning Field
    Ghost Ark

    8 Warriors
    Ghost Ark

    10 Immortals
    Tesla Carbine
    1 Harbinger of Despair
    Veil of Darkness

    6 Canoptek Scarabs

    x3 Annihilation Barge

I have finished the immortals other than the basing which those components still have to be ordered. I think for now, I'll probably be working on more vehicles.

I dig the blue and how all the colors work together! I'd love to see these dudes on bases. Your paint scheme really pops and I think that to 'balance' the model the bases should as well... so I'm excited to see what you've got in the pipeline.

Red Death is starting off strong, good looking force.
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things.
They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death.

Yet there is one thing they fear above all others.

They fear the wrath of the Blood Angels!

The imortals are great, the red is so rich and stands out well without overpowering the other colours.

    Re: Red Death...Necrons

Thank you everyone! It's a pretty simple paint job but detailed enough to be tournament worthy. I decided to take up a Ghost Ark next. I have three and I knew the headaches they would cause when I decided to get into Necrons. I'm only using two so I don't feel rushed to have it painted from start to finish before hitting the tabletop. Normally I do with my models since I don't use can primer and airbrush everything. They scratch easily until I varnish them. I use the wooden sticks to hold the vehicle together on the tabletop as well. Fully assembled, it is near impossible to paint. Some areas cant even be reached with a brush. So I have to make this even more complicated to complete.

For infantry basing, it will most likely be a dark grey wasteland. There will be two types of accessories. One using Hirst Molds as seen below, the other are resin crystals. $30 will be enough to base my entire army. A lot cheaper than buying resin bases!

Thanks to a long list of delays, I have about finished half of the ghost ark... I have to complete three ribs, gauss flayes and the cockpit.

Really like the colour scheme. Makes a nice change to the typical metallic Necrons. Are you using a NM gold or a "gold" metallic paint?

I will be watching you with interest

    Re: Red Death...Necrons

The pictures do make it look like NMM but it's not. I'm using vallejo Bright Bronze as my base coat. Over that I am using a craft brand gold called Sahara Gold. I haven't seen any other gold like it. It's very smooth and dull unlike the typical shining gold. I give it a coat of sepia wash afterwards. The finished pieces have been coated with vellejo matte varnish as well.

Very nice Necrons, the red and blue are executed so well. Look forward to seeing more, I think those Immortals are some of the nicest I've seen.
