Chaos Dwarfs (old and new) by Rob and Roll

    Hey everyone,

I joined this forum in order to create some painting/project logs and hopefully get inspired by yours. This will be my first thread and will hopefully get me some feedback on this project.

Since the gossip of the Tamurkhan book started last year, I wanted to do my old chaos dwarf mini''s some justice. I have bought most of them in the store years ago and added some stuff over the years through ebay when the prices werent as high as they are now. My painting skills have increased over the years and I figured these little guys deserved more then they had going for them at the time. So I stripped all of the paint and started painting the army all over again. Seeing the cool Forgeworld models and rules, I quickly added some of those miniatures as well. All in all I think I have over 3000 points of these guys, most of which need need painting.

My paint scheme is based on browns and metals simulating leathers and all kinds of metalwork. I use resin bases with a lava theme in order to add some much needed color and shine.

My local gaming friends and I recently started a small campaign, and this will hopefully stimulate me to paint the rest of the army as well. I apologise for any bad picture quality; I use my iPhone as a camera and some free software to touch up.

Enough words...... lets start with some pictures. These pictures are a summary of the rest of the thread.

I still need to make a banner for the warriors.
The unit has a basic unitfiller in the form of a slayer slave which most of you should be able to recognise from the 7th edition starter set.

    Thank you.

The bases are from Foundations of War. Their lava bases were exactly what I was looking for when I started this project. Their prices are decent in comparison to some other resin bases, the products are beautifull and they give you a great service. I could not recommend them enough. If you need more info, feel free to ask.

I managed to do alot of work on my Iron Deamon tonight. It will have the same style as the Magma Cannon above. I will probably add some pictures next week.

In the mean time I will add two pictures of my Hobgoblin Wolfriders. The are made from normal goblin wolriders with the upper body and heads from the old night goblin kit. They were slightly larger then then current night goblins and make a better Hobgoblin. I might change these alltogether. The new SW wolves look very nice and would probably make a more dynamic pose. And my Hobgoblins on foot look very different. For now, these are what I use.

I agree that the new SW wolves would be more dynamic but yours are still looking good. I like the darker colour scheme that you've gone for. Particularly on the bull centaur, I think it looks better than the traditional bright red.

    Tnxs.

About the paint scheme and the traditional GW one; I wonder how the GW painters in the studio would paint them now. Afterall it was a very different (painting) era when the produced these miniatures. Almost everyone used those bright primary colours on their models. Even the bases were bright green.... brrrr.

I think green bases look good. What I always hate is when people put bases on that dont match the terrain they use.

Are you going to be using the traditional big hat dwarves for the whole army or mixing them with the newer style ones?

Well to each their own I guess, I find the really bright green bases out of place most of the time.

I do agree wit Tarsus that terrain, table and bases should match as much as possible. If these Chaos Dwarfs turn out nice, I might have to add some terrain. Thanks for the tip/reminder.

Thank you, I was pleased with the result as well. To be honest, this paint job really needs colourfull bases. They would look rather monochrome or dull from a distance without the bright lava.

Apart from the Forgeworld warmachines, I will stick to the big hat ones for now. The new Infernal Guard models are nice, but the dont really mix well with the older models if you ask me. I'd rather have no hats (like on the warmachines) together with the old style big hats. The trick is going to be the hobgoblins. I have searched quit some time for inspiration, and found it on the chaos dwarfs online forum. I have been kit bashing some skaven and gnoblars in order to make nice new hobgoblins.

I am actually thinking of making this a dual prupose army. My local gaming friends accept the new chaos dwarf list and I enjoy playing it, but on official tournaments they are forbidden most of the times. I plan on using these models for a dwarf army, just like you would use traiter guard. I have even purchased an old school Anvil of Doom (the one on wheels) in order to convert to a more sinister version. The Blunderbussers would make excellent Thunderers and the Chaos Dwarf Warriors could be my Hammerers. I have a couple Death Rockets for grudge throwers, an Earthshaker Cannon for a Dwarf Cannon and the Iron Deamon for Organ Cannon. The Hobgoblins would make nice Dwarf Warrior/Rangers and Miners if proparly converted. That way I can use them as Chaos Dwarfs in local games, and bring a original Dwarf army to the table on official tournaments.

    What do you guys think?

Thank you all for the responses!

Re: Chaos Dwarfs by Rob and Roll

Here are some WIP pics of the first five hobgoblins.
I still need to add some highlights (haven't painted the ring for example) and paint something on the banner.

They are made from Stormvermin bodies, Gnoblar heads, some Chaos Marauder bits and some green stuff. The Stormvermin bodies had nice detail, a bit to much to my liking.... it took me hours to scrape off all the fur and skaven symbols, but I am satisfied with the result. I have built some with a shield arm in order to stand in the front rank when I use them as handweapon/shield Hobgoblins, and some with pure great weapons if I plan on using them as Dwarven Warriors/Rangers.

If I'd read your description of the Hobgoblins without looking at the picture, I would have said those parts wouldn't work - but they work and they look great!

On the excess of detail on the stormvermin bodies - would bestigor bodies work, or are those too large?

Wow, I wouldn't have bet my money on that kitbashing description either- but the results are very unique- and I would say they're a success.

The skaven weapons/armor have an aesthetic that reads somewhat Chaos Dwarfish- so that's a plus. And the proportion of the head really makes them look like stretched out lanky goblins, pretty neat.

Other than that- I like everything else going on in this thread- I would love to make a CD army of my own one day.

    Thanks for the feedback!

They have that nice hunchback thing as well because of the skaven bodies. I am quit satisfied with the result as well.

As for the idea of the bestigor bodies: The would probably look more savage and I would probably miss the armor, which indeed resambles some chaos dwarf work.

I have another thing I would like to get some input on. At the bottem of this message I have added 2 pictures of my first 10 painted Blunderbussers. New Chaos Dwarf Infernal Guard have shields equipped, and Dwarf Thunderers can equip them as well. I have found some nice resin shields for them that I would like to add, but I am unsure on where to put them.

Option 1: Place them standing in front of the mini under the gun (like Dark Elf Crossbowmen)
Option 2: Place them on the shoulder/back as if they were slung on their backs

    What do you think?

Re: Chaos Dwarfs by Rob and Roll

I decided to go ahead and use both options. The Blunderbussers who are actively shooting have their shields in front of them and rest their heavy blunderbuss ontop of it. The ones that are standing with their guns held up will get their shields on their backs. Here are 3 pictures of ten blunderbussers with the shield in front of them.
