    Re: Minotaurs!

My brother and I played the first game of our campaign yesterday. We had an immense amount of fun, peaked by moments of frustration, joy, and pure malice! We played an annihilation game using the dawn of war setup. My list consisted of my two tactical squads (equipped with flamers instead of their usual weapons), Moloch, the land speeder (in reserve), and the drop pod. He had a Ravager (with three of whatever those str5 ap2 heavy3 guns of space marine death are), Urien Rakarth and five Mandrakes in a Venom, and two warrior squads with sybarites with power weapons (one was an agonizer), a darklance in one, a splinter cannon in the other, and blasters in both. When the dust settled, we tied, though all I had left was Moloch with one wound! He did only have Urien Rakarth and a ravager left though. Here are some pictures.

Our forces face off! We wanted an old school battlefield for this game. Sort of a mirror of our collective 40k experience in one campaign. Hence the green hills, blue stream, jungle trees, ect, most of which we played with when we were kids, just repainted.

The Dark Eldar start with an aggressive first turn, blasting Urien and his mandrakes in their Venom straight at Moloch and tactical squad Sulla (with the melta weapons). On my turn Moloch and squad Sulla charged in, starting a combat that would last up until the last turn! We quickly learned that both Urien and Moloch are both almost impossible to kill in combat!

Reinforcements! On my turn squad Ageea (with the plasma weapons) descended from the stars to back up the ground forces. They would get in a shooting and combat duel with the Dark Eldar Warriors in the jungle, but ultimately loose, mostly I think due to the ravager claiming half their numbers! Off camera my landspeeder showed up and would have destroyed the Ravager, had it not passed some sort of 4+ invulnerable save it had...the brave landspeeder was then promptly annihilated by a dark lance.

Here is a shot of them right before they lost the fight...

The Mandrakes were easily over powered by Moloch and Sergeant Scipio (with the combi-melta and powerfist), but Urien held them up for almost the entire game, until a full squad of Dark Eldar Warriors (and the survivors from the fight with squad Ageea) charged in to help!

The Venom and Ravager moved in to cut off any retreat, but Moloch killed most of the warriors, and sent the rest of them fleeing! Squad Sulla had been wiped byout the warriors however.

In the last turns of the game the Venom picked up Urien (who had regrouped) and the ravager peeled off all but Molochs last wound! Moloch then shot the Venom with his Black Spear and blew it up, managing to scour a bitter draw from certain defeat.

Man was that brutal! Everything preformed more or less as I expected except for the land speeder...I'm not sure how to get the most out of it since it's so fragile. Maybe we just need some terrain it can actually hide behind? Regardless I learned that the ravager must die! It killed SO many of my men. So I have decided that as much as I want to paint the assault squad next I should probably paint up some anti-tank units with a high number of shots (because of that damned 4+ invulnerable save) instead of relying on melta weapons. I found a predator laying around in the closet and I think that it with an autocannon turret and lascannon sponsons coupled with a dread with twin linked autocannons and a heavy flamer and powerfist are in order.

So after all that, got any tips for fighting Dark Eldar? I also learned that I don't know a lot about them in their new incarnation...so even basic stuff might be helpful! Thanks!

Yeah man I love tactical marines too! And I REALLY wanted an all deep strike force, but I feel like I need some static anti-tank firepower. And I don't want to paint that many drop pods anymore! I also wanted to let you know that I've been lurking in your log for a long time. My first army was Blood Angles and your log was a big inspiration for me to start this. Thanks man!

So here's a small update; I finished squad Illios! Here they are, all charging into combat with Sergeant Grakus about to punch some foul xenos in the face!

And the whole lot so far:

    Thanks for looking!

    Re: Minotaurs!

Got some painting done this week! I went ahead and painted the assault marines anyway...and the power armored Librarian since I think Molocs a bit expensive for most games. I can swap him out for the librarian and buy either a predator or dreadnaught with the points saved! Just have to paint at least one of them next. I also painted up a techmarine tank commander to be my counts as Srg Chronus. The foot version is still WIP though.

Unfortunately it was a bit humid when I varnished the assault marines and the tank commander, resulting in a horrible "frost" on the surface that just about ruined them. I re-varnished them and they are now serviceable but I'm still rather upset. You can see the frost on some of the assault marines the worst. It's not quite as bad as it looks in this picture, and I'm getting used to it, but I still weep a little inside every time I look at them.

Next up is either the dreadnaught or the predator. And I think I will paint up my other two drop pods pretty soon as well.

Thanks for checking out my toys!

ooh, oooh. Paint the predator! or the dreadnaught! dreadnaught can use the drop pod, so that might be fun. But either will be great. I tend to love dreadnaughts more, but thats why I'd paint the less exciting thing first so I wouldn't lose steam.
on another note, the assault marines look awesome. those bronze jump packs are extra fancy. I'm sure the frosting isn't as bad as you see it, but still I abhor that. It makes me hesitant to ever varnish my models. But if nothing else I touch all my finely painted models with greasy fingers while I play games, so its worth while.
You know how I love to eat Hot Wings while I play Warhammer.

To fix that frosting, try using a brush on gloss varnish, then matt varnish them again after it dries. It should fix the problem completely without leaving a trace of frost.

Did that already. It defiantly helped but as you can see there's a little left. I'll just wait for really sunny days from now on...

I really like your take on the minotaurs, they always seemed like such a bland chapter before, but the way you did the oxidation colouring really brings a lot of depth to them.

Thanks man I'm glad you like them!

Yeah man I know EXACTLY what you mean. We havent played 40k together in ages! My gaming room is all set up for it now though so if you want give me a call and we can do it again sometime or just hang out with your daughter or talk about Mad Piracy...you know, whatever we have time for.

I decided on the dreadnaught (it is the most exciting) with a plethora of extra arms. I'll probably paint the predator next.

    Standard AOBR configuration:

A side shot of him with his assault cannon

Twin Linked Lascannon and Missile Launcher:

And two shots of how he'll usually be fielded against those dreaded Dark Eldar, a missile launcher and twin linked autocannon:

I also got bored and converted one of the tactical squads into a stern guard squad with 5 combi-flamers and 5 combi-meltas. I'll update the summary on the first page but pics will have to wait.

Thanks again to everyone who's looked and commented! Your attentions help spark my resolve in dark times!

    Re: Minotaurs!

Oh man it has been far too long since I did anything with my minotaurs! The rebooting of the citadel paint range and real life have been causing me no end of problems...but today I finally got around to finishing some stuff. Half a squad of terminators...not much I know but it's a something! Next up will be the next five and then the predator (the interior is done on it!)

And the whole lot so far! Quite proud of them...

I've also decided to paint up a rhino and a rhino/razorback with heavy bolters or a lascannon and plasma guns. Got them both modeled and might paint them soon depending on how that predator goes.

And finally a question, I'm debating how to best utilize the lighting claws in vanguard veterans. I currently have three with pairs but I was thinking that six with single claws might be a better way to spend the points. It gets you more attacks for the same points as long as you arn't taking too many casualties. What would you do?

    Thanks again!

Newer really liked the colur scheme of the minotaurs but for some reason you manage to pull it off. Think its the oxidation. Anyway, really nice work. Gogo spoil yourself with the fw chapter master.

Great looking army man. Keep up the great work. I love that shield for your commander and I'm kinda pissed I hadn't thought of that. Haha. Side note: nice Super Dungeon Explore models!

Very nice army indeed. I like the bronze and green alot. Nice Chronos alternative btw. I would go for dual lightning claws for some of the vanguard squad at least!

    Re: Minotaurs!

I decided to drop the next two drop pods, since the rhinos/razorback I decided to paint will effectively replace them in any list I make, I think I prefer the mobility of them to the alpha strike aspect of the drop pods. After using them a bit I can't really see taking more than one unless it was a really big game. Might change my mind later though...so who knows. Also debating dropping the fourth tactical squad. As much as I love painting tactical marines they just don't seem to do much in game, can't really see myself taking more than three unless the game was huge. But if the rhinos give the tacticals better performance in my games I may keep them. So enough rambling, on to the terminators I finished...

And I added some decals to the backs and the chainfist of some earlier squad member's...I really like how they look on there.

And the whole squad with Moloch...

    Re: Minotaurs!

I painted the predator yesterday. The pics arn't so good but they're all I have for now. And I decided to drop the heavy bolter and powerfist on the scouts and just give them a bolter-flamer to keep them cheaper.

The Predator as it will usually be fielded.

    And the alternate weapons

Just noticed I forgot to paint words on the parchment on one side...oh well I'll get to that later...might add a few more decals too...haven't decided yet.

Thanks again for all your unwavering support and interest.
