The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP)

This is the thread where you post what you painted in February.

Please post nothing else for 1 week, and then after the first week of Mar please feel free to comment on the work of others.

    Mission Statement:

It is the goal of The Tale of Fantasy Painters, and all Tales for that matter, to help fellow gamers paint their armies by providing them a place to find support and encouragement.

    The Tale:

The painters involved have made a commitment to paint and post, by the last day of each month, approx 200 points of their chosen army. They do this each month for the next 12 months.

The way it works is that painting would begin in September and then in the first day or two of October a thread will be put up where you can post what you had done in September (this trend will continue for 12 months). You can include as much information as you wish, but some good things to include along with the picture are: the units, the total points for that month, conversions, highs and lows, plans for next month, and a number between 1 and 6. The number is important because it has to do with feedback.

A week after the initial thread is created you can then (and are encouraged to) add feedback on the work of others. Due to the large number of people who take part in these tales it is suggested that you only comment on those that have the same number as you. Of course if there are ones that really catch your eye, or you are a trooper and want to comment on them all, that is obviously awesome.

However, because people have real lives with exams, holidays, honeymoons, new babies etc, etc. They get two 'Jokers'. For two months within the year you can ‘play a joker’ and rather than post an update they can post "sorry guys couldn't get it done this month. Real life got in the way." But the other 10 Months they have to come up with (approx) 200 points of painted and based figures. That is 200 points for 10 of the next 12 months.

In twelve months time we will all end up with a finished 2000 point army.
(Or at least everyone who can see it through to the end ... it's harder than you think!)

    Men and Boys:

Because this is harder than you would think ... As last year rather than try and hold everyone to 200 points a month I have decided to allow folks to join in and paint only 100 points a month. Whilst the goal for many remains getting a 2000 point army painted in a year the original and ongoing intention of this whole thing was to encourage and support folks to get stuff painted and 1000 points is better than no points! As a result we have two categories. 'Men' (painting 200 points/month) and 'Boys' (painting 100 points/month).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q : When can I join in? Does it have to be at the start or can it be any time?
A : Join in any time.

    Q : Can I paint more than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes, but if you can do this time after time then you can probably commit to more. Feel free to sign up multiple times to reflect the amount of work you plan to do (for example sign up for Beastmen X2 and submit 400 points a month, or Beastmen Men + Boy submit 300 points a month).

    Q : Can I paint less than 200 points in a month?
A : Yes. But we try to stay on track by painting more points in the next month to 'catch up'. For example if you only painted 100 points one month you could try and get 300 points painted the next month. Equally if you paint more one month you can take it easy and paint less the next month.

Q : What happens when I paint an expensive character?
A : This happens a lot. If your character was over 400 points you would simply paint him over two months (the sort of time your general deserves!) So You start posting him one month and post nothing the first month (unless you want to post WIP) then the second month you post the finished model and all the points get added on.

Q : What do I do when I'm done and the tale isn't over?
A : First thing to do is to include an army shot (everyone loves an army shot) and then it's up to you. Either stay on and paint a model now and then to take part, or start planning for the next tale. If you are really cocky then you can sign up for ANOTHER army is see if you can blitz it in time.

Q : Can I include a short narrative with each months post.
A : Yes. We love background stuff. Write as much as you like it will be read and enjoyed by many.

Q : Can I *insert something here that results in more painting*?
    A : A thousand times yes!!!

Q : Can Doi drop out?
    A : No he can't.

Q: Can other people drop out?
    A: It's up to Doi.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP

I think you are one day early Malorian...^^ But I'll post my work nonetheless :-)

Army : orcs and goblins (boyz category)

    Units : 5 orc warriors (30 pts) + 5 black orcs (60 pts) + 1 rock lobba (85 pts) = 175 pts (599 pts/1200 pts)

    Dice roll : 5

Highs : the model count raising up :-) Painting the lobba was a nice change, and I really enjoyed repainting the crew (took me two days).

Lows : painting the black orcs was quite long and less enjoyable than the first time. I haven't done the weathering on the armour, got lazy, but I'm quite satisfied with the armour so far. Maybe I'll add the weathering later, but for now they can be considered finished.

Still to do : improving the banner pole of the black orc standard bearer, and as usual varnishing and adding grass to the bases.
You'll find a couple more pics in my blogs (link in my signature)

And the tale so far (oops, I forgot to put the 2 shamans in the picture) :

Visit and rate my fantasy log : A lot of green against a feeble mind
    Models painted 2011= 45 / 2012 = 62 / 2013 = 7

I don't have a fancy camera at my disposal this month, so the pic is a bit funny.

Army : Wood Elves, Men's Category

Units : One Treeman from the Rare category for 285

    Point So Far: 1815

    Dice roll : 3

Still to do : At some point, I'm going to have to assemble and paint the remaining thirty Glade Guard, which is a bit rougher than doing the Eagles and such that I really want to paint.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP

    1000 points high elves

Backgroud: this army defends the forest Kingdom of Avelorn.

Unit: 14 swordmasters (the 15th will be Eltharion the Grim).
Swordmasters are the famous defenders of the high elf mages and their white tower of Hoeth in Saphery.
In my universe there once was a smaller white tower in Avelorn.
This has been destroyed during the wars between the high elves and the dark elves.
This made the remaining swordmasters of Avelorn even more determined to defend their Kingdom and to get rid of their enemies.

Conversions: The top of the standard and the banner are converted.
My brother made the green stuff image on the banner.

Painting: the cloth, leather and metals are painted in the same way as my other units. Each unit has two spot colours.
I didn’t want to use dark blue as the dominant colour, that is the colour of the swordmasters of Saphery, not Avelorn. That is why I used orange with blue gems.

    Basing: Micro art temple bases.

Still to do: varnishing and maybe a freehand design on the cloak.

    High: finished.
Low (but also funny): I was painting the wrong standard bearer.

Owl said: “Why is this standard bearer wearing different armour?”
Owl frowned and looked at the unpainted horde on the desk.
Owl then discovered the swordmaster standard bearer cowering behind the spearmen to hide his broken standard ……
No, no, owl did not curse. Parrots curse, owls make shrieking sounds.

Points: half in December/half this month = 106

    Diceroll: 5

Owl can spell his name ("Wol") and the word "Tuesday" (so that you know it isn't Wednesday). He can also read, although only if no-one is looking over his shoulder.

    ARMY: Dark Elves

UNIT: 1 Highborn on Cold One and 10 Repeater Crossbowmen

BUILD/CONVERSION: The Crossbowmen are built from Corsair legs and regular torsos and arms with a mix of Corsair heads and heads from Dark Eldar Wyches.

HIGHS & LOWS: The Highborn has so many little casting problems on him you could believe he's Finecast. And the Crossbowmen were a lot more work than I expected.

STILL TO DO: The original plan was to give the Crossbowmen's armour purple highlights like I did with the hydra's handlers. I will do that at some point.

POINTS: 300 (-ish; I don't have my armybook at hand currently.)

TOTAL POINTS: 1215 (which means I get my second Joker back, woohoo!)

    ARMY: Orcs & Goblins

UNIT: 1 forest goblin big boss on gigantic spider.

    BUILD/CONVERSION: Straight from the box.

HIGHS & LOWS: Fun to paint the spider in al the bright colours.

    STILL TO DO: Done.

    POINTS: 79

    TOTAL POINTS: 242

    ARMY: Dwarves - 2000pts (MEN)

UNIT: 3 Stonethrowers + BB 2012 forum mini (Lord)

BACKGROUND/THEME: A Hold of Dwarves living in the far north of the world, in a region under the terrible influence of Chaos. Led by the ancient and dwindling Purplebeard family, they fight to survive against the unending tide of Chaos. Many Gnomes live and fight alongside them too.

BUILD/CONVERSION: Foundry stonethrowers x3 (new kits, unmodified), plus BB 2012 forum miniature (Lord).

    STILL TO DO: Nothing.
HIGHS & LOWS: High - finishing some artillery

    POINTS: 200 + 1/2*270 = 335
    TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 1215 + 200 +1/2*270 = 1550

DICE ROLL : 6, but I'll try and comment on as many entries as I can!

Stone throwers and a Dwarven commander.

The Bugman's Brewers here finally received their flock when I did the stone throwers.

    Close-up.

    Dwarf Lord

The stonethrowers/grudgethrowers are finally finished. They were a lot of fun to do. The bases are 60mm square, and the Rangers are included in the pics to give a sense of scale. I definitely want to get more artillery done, but I'm not sure what to do next. I have a gyrocopter, but I just can't get over the idea of having the Dwarves with stonethrowers, gyrocopters, and cannons in the same army at the same time. Maybe I'll go for wheeled medieval bombards for the cannons. I want to find to find a really beefy-looking model, so if you know of one, please let me know. The forum mini was a bit of a rush job. I might tidy him up later on.

As I have stated from the outset, my aim with these Dwarves this year hasn't been to create a functional army (did that last year ), but rather to finish stuff from my collection. However, I do think some footsloggers would be useful, so I'll make an effort to get some Quarrelers, Slayers, and the Hammerer command group done.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP

ARMY: Imperial Dwarves (Empire proxy) - 2000pts (MEN)

UNIT: 8 Knights (Pony riders) including Command

BACKGROUND/THEME: A merry band of mercenary Dwarves. They fight, brawl, drink and swindle their way across the Empire, and often inspire more fear and worry in the villages and towns they 'protect' then the dark beasties who prey upon the lands of the Empire. They are led by the eccentric Lord Purplebeard, a strange Dwarf who loves fashion and rambling on about 'legendary' family ties, being a dispossessed Prince (supposedly) and his 'lost family fortune'. Many doubt his tall tales, but he has proven himself on the field of battle.

BUILD/CONVERSION: WK Minis (WK Miniature Imperium)

    STILL TO DO: Nothing.
HIGHS & LOWS: High - finishing something!

    POINTS: 22*8 + 50 = 226
TOTAL POINTS SO FAR : 226 Please ignore the previous numbers.

DICE ROLL : 6, but I'll try and comment on as many entries as I can!

Pony Riders! I haven't converted the musician yet.

Only 7 are pictured. The other guy went off for a trot.

    The small Imperial Dwarf force

The infantry guys above were painted before TOFP 2011-12 so they are not counting towards my total for this year. I wasn't fully happy with them so I toned down the garish colour schemes a bit when I did the cavalry.

Next up, I plan to do at least one cannon. I've also started some Thunderers/Handgunners. I'll be able to catch up on the points by doing a cavalry-heavy, artillery-heavy, character-heavy force.

As for my Chaos and Gnome armies, I plan to update you in the next few days

Zark's Averland Dogs of War expansion Month 6

    Roll: 4

    Units:
    Hireling Wizard Lord [Life]
    Hireling Wizard [Light]
    Hireling Wizard on Warhorse [Celestial]
    Lorenzo Lupo

    Points: 175 + 65 + 79 + 275 = 594pts

    Total: 2084 + 594 = 2678pts

Broke out with some characters this month, mainly to practice speed painting (also because I was busy with other stuff).

All standard GW figures apart from Treegar the Druid, who is a Reaper figure.

I have also gotten around to adding names to my previous characters, but not my Regiments (yet)

As promised, some army shots. First up, the collection of everything painted for this year's Tale:

And a shot including everything painted for the army so far - overall some 5000pts ish.
Zark not believe in democracy. We go left!

    Doomscape's Dwarves - Nuffle's Irregulars

Unit - 19 Bugman's Rangers, and Bugman himself!

    Points - 331 total

    Roll - 5

Highs - More metal dwarves! I've been working on some plastic units of great weapons and crossbows as well, but figured they're not quite done enough this time 'round.

Lows - None to speak of.

    Pictures!

    Doomscape's Demons

Unit - 3 bloodcrushers of Khorne

    Points - 210

Highs - These are actually rather nice plastic models, I was surprised (picked up six secondhand, they were in pretty decent shape).

Lows - I'm sort of tired of bloodletters at this point. Maybe time to move on to more horrors.

    Pictures!

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP

    Doomscape's Tomb King Debacle

Unit - 32 archers with full command, necrotect

    Points - 272

Conversions - Finecast is my enemy, so I converted up the necrotect out of chariot, tomb guard, and archer parts. It's pretty simple but I think it turned out well.

Highs - The blue came out pretty well. This is a tough army to paint.

Lows - Little known fact, but I can't feel my fingertips almost at all, so these little guys tend to snap I'm going to have to run a Monster Mash just to protect them from me!

    Pictures -

Army: The High House of Chains, 2400pts of Druchii
    Monthly Target: 240pts
    This Months Total: 432pts
    Jokers Used: 0

Completed: 6 Black Guard (78pts), Cold One Chariot (100pts), Dread Lady w/Chill Blade, Glittering Scales, Other Tricksters Shard and Opal Amulet (254pts)

    Background:
Crewed by veterans of the Household Cavalry, the fearsome Nauglir Chariots once again take their rightful place alongside the spears of the House of Chains after Malekith wisely rescinds his ban on their use. The Serpents Kiss, Lady Nymeria Valys also leaves the bed chambers and pleasure-dens of the Obsidian Tower and brings her vast Alchemical knowledge to the House of Chains. Accompanied by her fearsome and devoted Wardens, her presence alongside Velrys Arkitaine has raised concerns and eyebrows amongst the noble Druchii of Clar Karond.

Conversion work: Same again for the remaining Wardens and Nymeria is a simple conversion of the Dark Eldar Llhamean. The chariot is based on the Lion Chariot, with CoK Nauglir and crew converted from CoK and Warrior plastics with a few pieces from the High Elf chariot crew.

Highs: Nymeria and the Wardens look great, easily one of my favourite units in the army. I'm also very happy with how the chariot turned out, more so with finally getting a Nauglir scheme sorted that looks good.

Lows: One of the censers is a little crooked and two Wardens are wearing the same helm. That irritates me immensely as I was trying so hard to make sure they each had a different helm.

Next months WiP: The second chariot and Hiroth Arkitaine, the BsB and Seneschal of High House Chains.

    Dice Roll: 5.

    And the pics.....

    Lady Nymeria Valys

The completed unit of Obsidian Wardens

    Army : High Elves
Bacground: A detachment of High Elves in Lustria.

    Category : Boyz

    Points so far: 468

    February's painting :
    7 Seaguard with Shields – 91 points

    TOTAL : 559/1000 pts

DICE ROLL : 5 (But I'll try to post comments for everyone)

HIGHS : Finally Finishing. These are really highly detailed, and so finishing always seems another highlight away. But I love the models, so its rewarding to get them finished.

LOWS : Taking two months to finish them. I’ll hopefully be able to do a little better this month. Not getting the basing done yet, but I think I finally know what I’m looking for.

NEXT TO DO : Undecided yet, I might do another couple Seaguard, and I’m deciding between some Shadow Warriors and a Tiranoc Chariot.

    Pictures!

Conversion work: Only some scenic bases and a new standard.

Highs: Starting a new army is so much fun!

Lows: Still not sure about the color scheme.

Next month: finishing these and more of them.

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP

ok before i do my entry malorian the main table needs changing as all my ogres and chaos are now one army therefore i havent played any chaos jokers and the ogres are not finished. It should simply be 3xmens chaos alliance that will include both my ogres and beastmen/warriors for the alliance. Sorry for any confusion but please change that as 12 jokers i havent used is insane! I dread to think what my alliance army total is so far!

heres this months entry which totals 1624 points

    highs
i enjoyed painting the firebelly and jabberslythe the most but im finding my enthusiasm for beastmen again!. Managed to get quite abit done this month so its another big entry from me! I bought an ogre battalion 3 boxes of mournfangs and bragg so they will show up soon. Also glued an ironblaster this month,my first of many!

    lows
think the jabberslythe is missing something maybe going to add some markings to it. Also the firebellys skin needs another wash and the picture is terrible as his loincloth is green, his gutplate is brass and silver and his facemask is brass but the photo doesnt show them. I might also tattoo him and nurgle him up abit and change the hair colour on the severed heads on his belt.

    pics

    firebelly level 2 155 points

    Malagor 350 points
beastlord h armour sheild gnarled hide ramhorn helm 184 points
sorcerer bray shaman level 4 shard of herdstone 285 points

30 ungor with ful command 165 points

15 bestigor full command 210 points

    jabberslythe 275 points

my total for this month is 1624 points! next month i will probably start my unit of chaos hunter themed maneaters and maybe a few more minotaurs or any of this lot

Re: The Tale of Fantasy Painters 2011-2012: Month 6 (Feb painting and Mar WIP

    Hey everyone,

So I kinda dropped off the face of the tale after month 3! Life got preaty busy preaty fast but Ive just about managed to keep up with the tale and im finally here to show my (limited) progress, first post is for month 5's work then month 6 will follow.

    Dice Roll : 5
    Background : Middenhiem

    Units : Warrior Priest - 96, 6 Swordsmen - 36

Build/Conversion : The Warrior Priest is the old priest with 2 hand weopons. After doing some preaty shoddy work on him a long time ago i set about saving this model. Swapped his right hand for a white wolf hammer, left hand the same sheild which runs throughout the army and then gave him a white wolf cloak with a little extra detail added. The swordsmen ive posted about quite a few times now

Painting : Same blue and white theme through the army. Whats new this time is the wolf cloak, added a little tallern flesh to the grey for the wolfs head dont know if im 100% happy with the effect though .

Still to do : Basecoated 5 halflings but never got past the wash, they are still awaiting attention...

Highs : Priest came out well, was particularly happy that I had managed to rescue him from a bad state to a nice condition.

Lows : Ive lost all interest in painting the halflings, lead to a low total for the month.

    Points : 132 (722 total)

    Next Month : Next Post!
