    Narcissus' Death Guard

I thought I would start a little painting log on here with my Death Guard force. They will be from the Apostles of Contagion warband from the Siege of Vraks. I am aiming to finish 1,500 points in the next few weeks to have a force to take to a local tournament.

Here is an AoBR dreadnought I have converted for the force. I tried lots of new things with the sculpting and conversions.

    Over the top tentacles.

    Re: Narcissus' Death Guard

Here is my latest offering. I've fully assembled a champion and I am working on some more plague marines. All of this skirmish building I have been doing is making me take ages converting and building each model. I need to speed up. Or paint more large and high points value models...

    Champion with power fist

    ...and tentacles...

    Three torso sculpts in progress.

Here is a WIP shot showing the colour scheme I am planning to use.

    Re: Narcissus' Death Guard

    Thanks guys.

Horacus-I think it is maybe too much work. I had been hoping to finish this force quickly but I am getting really carried away with the sculpting. I really enjoy sculpting and there are lots of great details I can add to these models.

Here are the latest models I've finished the conversions for (mostly, still might add a few cables to the exposed brain guy as I accidentally cut off a face cable...

    Beaky

    Three eyes

    Braindead

I've also started assembling some terminators while I wait for putty to cure and things. Still a bit of work to go. The arms and legs need more sculpting (I haven't even cleaned mold lines off of the arms).

All the terminators will be fully magnetized.

Comments and criticisms appreciated as always. Also, any ideas for extra details I should sculpt on some models in this army would be appreciated. I've been making it up as I go along so extra ideas would be great. Thanks!

Wow really neat! Could you share the colour scheme recipe for the green to a fellow Death guard collector?

    Re: Narcissus' Death Guard

    Hey Fizzy,
I painted the Death Guard shown above with the following "recipe":
    Airbrush vallejo white primer
Airbrush codex grey on lower surfaces
Airbrush Vallejo Rotting Flesh as a zenithal highlight (from above, hitting only surfaces that would be lit)
    Glaze with camo green
Wash with Secret Weapon miniatures baby poop wash
Add dirty area on armour with glazes of Devlan Mud wash

Sounds kind of involved when I write it out like that...

These are awesome! Also great sculpting and mods with green stuff。 The "chimney"stacks on some of the back packs are especially cool。 Keep up the good work。

    Thank you!

No it sounds simple enough for me to try it oit. I will try some methods with those colours. Did not expect grey though!

I am hoping for more FW stuff ^^

    Re: Narcissus' Death Guard

    Thanks everyone.

Importman-They are one of my favourite bits too. I really enjoy sculpting the little chimneys. A little theme I want to carry through the army.

khaosmarine-Thanks. I really wanted to try and keep the sculpting as part of the model and to not change the general shape of the models too much.

Fizzy-I will probably base the final models with a dark green instead as I found the light grey did not have enough contrast for the zenithal highlight.

    juicytomatos-I will!

Here are some terminators I have been working on. I still need to add more shoulder pads and do some more sculpting on the armour and nurglify the weapons and arms. I am pleased with how the bellies and heads came out (one head is unfinished). I want to visually tie all of the models in with the basic death guard plague marines.

All of the arms (except reaper autocannon) are removable.

I plan to have these conversions finished later today. Then I will build three more plague marines and then begin painting.

Looking really good, where did you get the pipe work for the cables? Also any chance of a guide for the bloated bellies?

    Re: Narcissus' Death Guard

Thanks for all of the comments.

Wilsonian-I'll make a belly sculpting tutorial next week when I put together some more plague marines. For now, here are the mostly ready for paint terminators. The cables are dragon forge pewter cables. Great for adding cable details.

    Lots of new studs.

Model on the left is an entirely AoBR terminator.

    Finished details on the back.

Here are some pictures of the daemon prince and base. I still need to sculpt the gas mask and details around the wings.

The sword is made from plasticard.

    Death Guard Stomach Sculpting Tutorial

This tutorial will explain step by step how I sculpt bloated nurgle stomach armour to match the Forge World Death Guard models. The Forge World models are great, but there are only ten poses and I like converting models. Therefore, I have been trying to sculpt my own stomachs to match the asthetic of the existing models and add some character and variety. I will add more parts on how I add rivets and make the metal tabards in another post.

    Materials
You will need greenstuff (or another similar product), thin plasticard rod (for rivets), a model, lubricant (I use chapstick) and sculpting tools (for this model I used the GW sculpting tool, a chisel colour shaper, and a pointy rubber tip).

I used the colour shaper on the left, red tool in the middle, and the tool on the far right.

    Procedure

Step 1: Add a blob of greenstuff approximately the same size and volume as the resin Death Guard's belly to a model (it is easier to do with the arms unattached).

Step 2: Using some chapstick (a tiny bit) and the metal tool, start creating the basic shape by gently stretching the edges outwards to match the shape of the Forge World model. Compare to original.

Step 3: Continue until you are happy with the shape and then smooth the greenstuff by gently brushing it with the colour shaper and lubricant until you get a perfectly smooth finish. (To this point it took me about 5-10 minutes, if you are adding a boltgun and just want the shape, you could stop here)

Step 4: Use the tool of you choice to create a thin line about 1mm from the edge of the sides. Don't press hard, just draw a thin line. Then use a flat tool to gently smooth in both directions around the line (ex. smooth from the line to the margin and from the line to the center).

Step 5: Add damage. Now we get to be creative and add damage and detail. I started by poking some holes using the rubber tipped dental pick.

Step 6: Make the hole deeper. Add cracks around the edges. Add detail inside. Use a sharp tool to carefully make the edges pull outwards. Be careful during this step that you do not change the shape of the belly too much.

Step 7: Add details like intestines, cables, holes, cracks, tentacles, etc. Be creative! Have fun! This is a hobby. Go crazy!

    Re: Narcissus' Death Guard

Step 8: Cut some small pieces off of a thin piece of plasticard rod. You will need 8-10 little pieces. Each should be about 1mm long (smaller is better).

Step 9: Pick up each rivet using the tip of a hobby knife. Carefully push it a tiny bit into the greenstuff. You have a rivet. Repeat at regular intervals around the edge of your belly.

Step 9: Leave your model undisturbed to cure for a few hours. Here you can see a comparison between a few other work in progress models and the original Death Guard model.

Here are a few more examples using the same technique:

That's all there is to it. I will add some more tutorials on how to add fungus infections to your models, how to add rivets to hard surfaces, and how to make plasticard armour in the future. Please post links if you try these techniques yourself and I will include your pictures in the blog. Thanks!
