Precinct Omega paints... Chaos Space Marines

It's funny. At Precinct Omega, we've been doing commission painting for the best part of three years and some armies just keep cropping up, whilst others don't. Anyway, this is the first Chaos Space Marine commission we've had (although a second has already come in and is in processing).

This first squad just arrived from Freelancer James D:

    Basic TT quality commission?

They look ok, but everything looks like it is 1 or 2 highlights away from being finished.

Also none of the barrels of the weapons have been drilled, a 5 second job on each model that adds alot to the finished look.

Sorry for making the first comment in the log so critical, but I have what you and your painters are capable of, and this is far below the usual standard.

    Cheers

I too must say that this doesn't seem to be up to the usual standard that you post here. The colours look like they are the first coat with nothing else done to them to me. I think even a wash would add to the deph of the red and help define the lines of the model.

This is, indeed, primarily a Level 1 project. Not the sort of thing that covers Precinct Omega with glory, but it pays the bills and provides opportunities for painters to make some money who might not otherwise be winning Golden Demons. And on that theme, here're some more from Freelancer Mike:

For those looking for something more interesting, we are doing three Level 3 minis in this project, too. They're still with the freelancer, though. I hope to add pics of a Land Raider and a brace of Obliterators to this plot shortly.

@sheep - We at Precinct Omega like to take a balanced view of the miniatures hobby. Whilst I may like to drill out my barrels, not everyone does. Moreover, it's shockingly easy for a drilled barrel to end up with the hole off-centre sometimes even tearing a chunk out of the side of the barrel. I've been drilling barrels for over a decade and I still screw it up sometimes. As a rule, unless there's a good reason to do so (like a specific request), we don't **** about with other people's miniatures.

In this particular case, the client is exceptionally pleased with the quality he is receiving for the price he's paying and that, at the end of the day, means POS is doing it's bit to make this world a fractionally better place.

If the client is happy that's all that matters mate.

I wasn't attacking your standards, or those of your painters, if they fit the brief and the client has no complaints then more power too you. I will admit that I had no idea on your tiered painting system, so if he's getting what he paid for I'm happy to see what the level 3's will look like.

As for the bolter barrels, I agree, I still cock them up from time to time too, but personally I think the look is worth the risk of cack handed ness

So, finally, we have some progress on getting this project finished.

These guys, by Freelancer Rob, are the Champions for the two Terminator squads shown above, but built using the Chaos Terminator Lord kit, which I think was a really good call by the client, as these guys really stand out, even before one takes the paintjob into account. Rob's done a cracking job on these.

Always nice to see another log up from you and your team. Agreed that sometimes the models might not look GD or Showcase level, but thats because the client doesn't always want or can afford it. And like you said.. its what pays the bills.. awesome work..

Cheers, Grisnik. We hope, at least, to make those tabletop armies look pretty, even on a budget.

So, having received back an assembled, based and primed Abaddon from Freelancer Rob, whose schedule prevented him from finishing it, I set to this morning:

And finally took a picture of it this afternoon:

Not finished, yet, obviously. But I'm pretty happy with the outcome so far. Should have it finished today, but I've lost the light to get decent pics, so you'll have to wait until Monday.

So I got the Big Man finished:

I'm very pleased with how he's turned out in a comparatively short time. I've used red on his top-knot, loincloth and on the Blood Angels helmet on his trophy rack to better tie him in with the predominantly red armour of the rest of the Khorne-themed army, and blue to help him stand out as a bad mo-fo. However, I've not done anything with his hair. What do you think? Should I do anything more than add a gentle highlight and keep it black, or should it be something different again?

Nice abaddon, good use of the red and the golden highlights.

Finally received from Freelancer Gareth, whose tussles with incompetent courier companies has been truly epic in scale and quality:

Here's a quick shot of the Decimator before I send it to Freelancer Gareth for painting:

I used a FW Mk4 Dreadnought Chainfist to "upgrade" the claw arm to make it a bit more "Khorne-y": client's request. The whole thing is assembled apart from the huge shoulder pads, which are just resting on the shoulders, and the base (it's just on withe blu-tak right now).

Both those Abaddons are great, I love the effort both painters have put into their faces.

I quite like the restrained use of pink on the Noise Marines, keeps them reigned in as Black Legionnaires.

I look forward to more, particularly that Decimator.

I like the typhus and the rust effects on him, the crux terminatuses need removing from the land raider though
