With my transhumanist leanings, I always keep an eye out for which Chapter seems to be the most transhumanist. Next in line is the theme 'for the good of humanity', where the chapter has motivations/policies that make them honest-to-goodness good guys. So, my favorite changes over time.

I really like Magnus, though. He was certainly into the idea of "investigation to cause augmentation"

Favorite legion: Either Thousand sons, wolves or Salamanders, their fluff colour schemes..
Favorite Primarch: Definately not Magnus, as he was just... dumb? stupid? selfish? actually murdered his own sons to allow the rest of them and his own planet to die? (So far as I know, no primarch would have considered actually killing their one sons directly pre corruption. Proberbly Vulcan, caring for people, and being able to create rather then just destroy. I think their is a trend amounst those who like the Thousand sons ans those who don't like Magnus......

Re: Your Favourite Legion, Primarch.. and WHY!!!

I must admit I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned Horus.

Anyway for primarch I like Lorgar although I do like it when russ is hinted at being very clever and just acts the part of a mindless savage. Night Haunter also interests me and I have to admit to not having much interest in any of the loyal primarchs although I do like their legions.

As for the legions, the word bearers come out top for me, death guard are also pretty up there too. Being a World Eaters fan I'm sure the upcoming HH books will push them to the top of the list though.

Hmm I would go for Russ because I like the idea of him acting as a barbarian on purpose (for god knows why)
as for my favorite chapter I would go for... either wolves or Dark angels, Wolves because I like icy biomes. Dark angels, is probably because I am a fool for any kind of knight.

Sanguinius. Back in the red era, he was the only loyalist Primarch with much of a story behind him, even before Codex Angels of Death.

That seems a little ironic now, since he and his Legion are only now getting a HH novel to themselves.

Hmm, for the sake of brevity probably the Word Bearers. I don't dislike any of the original legions really, though I like the Blood Angels and Salamanders the least. As for the Primarchs, probably Lorgar.

I am currently looking to shift a sizeable amount of Chaos Space Marine models, including Dark Vengeance Cultists/Chosen/Helbrute/Lord, Fantasy Chaos Knights, a Dark Apostle, Fantasy (Finecast) Chaos Lord, Warp Talons, Possessed and painted models with Forge World parts. Send me a message if you're interested!

Kunze and Corax, so deeply flawed. I also don't mind Leman Russ.

Legion: Either the Blood Angels or the Salamanders. Noble legions both, and the most human IMHO.

Primarch: obviously Sanguinius. A noble hero, exemplifying everything good about the Emperor/Imperium/Humanity.
    Nemesis Doom Thumb - Castigator
Eldar Runes of Cheating - Cheeslord

A single candle that shows the way... RIP Brimstone.

    I'm painting some Eldar again!

I am pretty terrible for latching onto the last Black Library book I read, if its especially well done. ADB gets me every time (Night Lords, Word Bearers, and then Black Templars) but Battle of the Fang has me leaning toward SW right now. :]

Re: Your Favourite Legion, Primarch.. and WHY!!!

The only traitor primarchs I can ''understand'' are Fulgrim and Horus because they were tainted and corrupted by Chaos in moments of ignorance (Fulgrim) or weakness (Horus). Out of these two, Fulgrim is the most acceptable because he has no spoiled brat ''hurt feelings'' like Horus (who I dislike) seems to have had - he actually had a goal, ultimate perfection, and even realised what was happening when he killed Ferrus Manus but then it was too late as the corruption was too strong and he was screwed. Of course you might argue that Horus also had a goal but his was the result of ''waaaaah! Emperor sucks!'' rather than making it up himself. The rest of the traitor primarchs are either ****** (everyone else except Lorgar) or both a ***** and pathetic (Lorgar). The Emperor is far from blameless in this both by direct actions that made some traitor primarchs distrust/dislike/begrudge him and by not guarding them at all against Chaos, but still.

Nevertheless, if I had to give a favourite traitor primarch & legion it would be a tie; Konrad & the Night Lords before Konrad seems to have caught a serious blow to the head when no one was looking and before the legion became filled with scum (though I can see the point of view of the criminals/murderers who were trying to better their lot in life using what means were necessary to do so). This because of the cool psychological terror tactics & brutal decisiveness they used with the important distinction from say the World Eaters that it was deliberately calculated and not mindless rage. Also Magnus & the Thousand Sons because he at least tried to do the right thing even if he was a ***** about it, he had no intention of joining Chaos but got screwed over by Chaos and the legion was... progressive.

The loyalist primarchs & legions are far more palatable because they were fit for the job and weren't spoiled nutcases. I can't find a favourite among them if you'd so force me to. If there was a force of marines that was like the Word Bearers but preached the Imperial Truth instead of the Imperial Creed, that would be my favourite - I have a thing for crusaders. But as far as I've read there was no such legion.

I don't really mind people turning to Chaos for immortality and power because that's the only way they can get it, as long as they're honest about it - I'd probably do it myself if I was in the 40k universe, acknowledge that it's despicable and would consider myself despicable if I did it, but I wouldn't try to lie and justify it like the crybaby primarchs.

My favorite Legion and Primarchs are the Word Bearers/Ultramarines and Lorgar/Guilliman respectively. Both seemed to want the best for humanity in two very different, and very flawed ways. Plus their dichotomy makes examining the choice always fun.

Lorgar wanting ''the best for humanity'' before he got butt-hurt I can see even if I don't agree with it, though I've not read any fluff on him besides what I can find online through googling so I don't know much more than that he wanted to create a cult of the Emperor and all that. But after he looked in the direction of Chaos and thought it was pretty cool? then he is just deluded and self-serving in the same manner an insane maniac (such as a plague-spreader of Nurgle) tells himself his victims like it. But Lorgar is worse than that plague-spreader of Nurgle. He thought about it, he discussed it, he listened to its lies, he went along with it, he believed it - and that after presumably witnessing for himself the horrible nature of Chaos when he made that roundtrip. Never did he seem to ask himself really elementary stuff like ''why would Chaos/the servant of it trying to make me join the cause want me to join so badly?'', ''are these people/things empathic and really do want the best for mankind or what's their agenda?'' or ''I'll see what the Emperor has to say in his defense first - this could be very dangerous'' either.

As I outlined above, I think Lorgar in particular is both a ***** and pathetic and that unlike the loyalist primarchs like Vulkan, Russ or the others, he probably never really cared about mankind as genuinely as he thought - it was just his childhood ''I want to become a firefighter!'' dream; he liked the idea of caring for mankind more than he liked mankind, at his roots he was an ideologist but not a humanist and this showed when he embraced Chaos ''for the best''. But each's preference to his own I guess

No love for Primarch Rubinek and his legion, the Iron Hearts?

Personally, I've always thought that the Ultramarines and RG were just all-around swell guys. They may not have the swagger of Russ or the looks of Sanguinius, but you always knew you're world was in for a treat if an Ultramarines fleet came to claim it.

Perhaps it might help if you read more on his character? I found after reading "The First Heretic" the character became far more appealing than I ever thought he could be. As to the rest of your points... *shrug* to each his or her own. Don't really want to derail the thread more than this.

The Best Primarch, Sanguinius, He paid the biggest price even though he knew he could not hurt Horus let alone defeat him, he still held to the ideas of their father, he was the true hero of all the Primarchs. I also Like Regal Dorn, helped keep it all together when the big guy checked out.

Legion: Blood Angels, hands down, they were the right hand of the Emperor, and even now, they still fight for their lives so that they can give their lives in his service, no one is more Noble then the Blood Angels.....
The enemies of the Emperor fear many things.
They fear discovery, defeat, despair and death.

Yet there is one thing they fear above all others.

They fear the wrath of the Blood Angels!

I aquired The First Heretic and am reading it now. Unfortunately - and I'm beginning on chapter six now - it's only increasing my distaste for Lorgar but thanks for making me read it.

Obviously you really like the Blood Angles and thats cool, but I don't get how Sanguinius was anything but stupid. If he knew (literally as in he foresaw it) Horus would kill him with ease then why not wait till the Emperor turned up and have 2v1? It's not like if he hadn't Horus would have escaped or anything. It would have been a noble sacrifice if he had actually prevented something with his death.

I know in some background he made the chip in the Horus' armour that the emeperor used to kill him (I never likde this as it means the Emperor couldn't even scratch Horus), but even then I have no doubt if he had waited for the Emperor they could have won easily. After all a groups value is more than the sum of it's parts.
