Enemy Within to be Re-released for WFRP3.

The classic Enemy Within campaign - rated by many as the best written campaign ever written (arguably apart from Cthulhu's Masks of Nyarlathotep) is being re-released for WFRP3 later this year.

I'll probably grab a copy. I've got all the original (except the finale, Empire in Flames) and i've always fancied running it, but i've never actually got round to running WFRP3 (still a 2nd ed. lover...). It'll be interesting to see how they end it, since the original pretty much ends in all out war all over the Empire, Karl Franz dead and more.

Anyone played the campaign all the way through? Anyone getting a copy?

Ah but this is not the Enemy Within campaign, this is a new campaign with the old name. Just as before (with the small but vicious dog), FFG are trading on the popular names, ideas and concepts of the original system (remember how many times the dog was mentioned only to be sidelined into a seperate suppliment, oops you gotta spend more if you want it......). They have already said its starting in Averland with the fallout from the death of the Mad Count, not on the road to Altdorf and adventure.

This campaign will be based on the "themes" and "ideas" with "input" from the original authors. It will not be a remake of TEW, instead it will be like sticking a Rolls Royce badge on a Skoda and saying "Hey, we are releasing this awesome new Rolls". Don't judge me on my grumpy tone, its the way FFG have run the WFRP license that annoys me.

Jedi, Empire in Flames is pretty dire even for 1st Ed WFRP, the doomstones run better. Instead grab the PDF for the Empire in Chaos which is a retelling and apparently pretty much how Hogshead were going to rework it. Personally I finished TEW at PBtT and ran the plot into the Doomstones and Drachenfels because my players were much keener on a hack and slash (which in WFRP means suicidal) method of play. Other groups I have run it with never made it past DotR because they gave up fighting chaos to become merchants with a fleet of river boats and piles of cash.

Empire in Flames is alright - it's a touch railroady, but then so is the rest of the campaign, but it's alright.
Quite different in tone to the previous installments due to the author, and probably the equivalent of epic level d&d in terms of scope and where things end up (if everyone doesn't die).

EiF is a massive drop off in quality from what came before (I don't count SRiK as part of TEW) but that's because GW were getting out of the rpg business as it wasn't selling minis and they rushed out a finale to the campaign.

The chances of this reboot being anything like the quality of the original are slim but my interest in still piqued by it.

Doomstones was pants. A low rent D&D hack n slash. I'd play EiF ahead of it any day of the week.

Doomstones as written was pants, the campaign works really well if you modify it a little, there is some hack and slash its true but over 50% of the original is roleplaying (infact parts 3 and 4 don't need to involve any real fighting unless you want to get caught up in a war thats none of your buisness or are less than morale and skip out on the monks (which in my experience is what WFRP players do, given how harsh the system can be). Part 2 can be done again by roleplaying if you actually talk to the Ogres and Part one has a fair number of non combat encounters as well.

Any roleplaying game is what you
make of it as a Storyteller and what your players contribute as interactive actors in the morphic plot. The 1st Ed TEW was ok. I've seen it both run great and I've seen it completely sidelined into simultaneous backdrop infavor of the players whims, which with some creative GMing and actually turned out even more deep and interesting in my opinion. 1st ed vs 2nd vs 3rd ect is the same crap I've been hearing about WFRP & D&D since I was a kid. Seems people just have an innate desire to compare and complain. You could take any of those systems or campaigns and run the best game anyone's ever played in. If money is the issue stick with the material you have already and run the old game and switch things around in a new or interesting way of your own. If $60 (or less if you wait a week after its release and buy it on Amazon or Buy.com) isn't a big deal then try it out for some new ideas or options to existing campaigns your running.

To get the equivilent of the information that is provided by the second edition rulebook (let alone the first edition which had considerably more) you will need to spend alot more than $60, the main box covers only a fraction of the gods/wizard colours/careers/skills and talents/character races and you have to purchase a considerable number of expensive suppliments to play the game as intended. This has been changed some what by releasing the books in a format which, as I understand it, requires less of the cards/counters and other bits of stuff but its still FFG which means (admittedly awesome components) large amounts of bits and a large $$$ cost.
