    Hive Fleet Jörmungandr

    Hive Fleet Jörmungandr

    Hello all,

Welcome to my first plog, my tyranid hive fleet of Jormungandr! Basically I will do my best to keep this log up to date with my little exploits with my nids and all that fun stuff. At the moment I have very little painted, I paint slowly so this will most likely never be finished but one can but try! I started collecting this particular army nearly three years ago with the old battleforce that was actually decent value and a tyrant. I recently came back to the hobby and have started this up again and I hope to get a sizeable force done. I have expanded the army a little with more gaunts and warriors so the army list currently stands at:

    HQ

    1x Hive Tyrant
    Heavy venom canon
    1x Tyranid Prime
    Boneswords & Scything talons

    Troops

    5x Tyranid Warriors
Scything talons, 1x Venom Canon, 4x Deathspitter

    8x Genestealer Brood
    Toxin Sacs

    24x Termagant Brood
    Devourers and Adrenal Glands

    24x Hormagaunts Brood

    Fast Attack

    5x Sky-Slasher Swarm Brood

    Heavy Support

    1x Carnifex
Crushing Claws, Frag Spines, Toxin Sacs

I mainly do this for the modelling and painting satisfaction so I'm not too fused as to how well composed my army is. In all honesty I'd rather have a better looking 'swarm' on the battlefield than actually win the game!

The reason I chose Jormungandr for my hive fleet was the fluff sounded so cool with it wiping out Forgeworld Megyre and Legio Annihilator! I do have plans for something along the lines of the beast that tore a warhound in two described so briefly in the codex. Plus it's a Norse theme so how can you go wrong!

I am unaware of any 'set' colours for Jormungandr so I have gone with a scheme I feel looks suitably alien that I will enjoy painting enough to get an army done. Well that is the plan at least. Now onto some photos of what's done so far:

    The first 8 hormagaunts

    My sloppy paint work!

    Smile!

PIP of the scheme on the termagants

    PIP of the carnifex

All these models were made 3 years ago, ie under the 4th Ed. codex and so some biomorphs are no longer available. A little sad all my genestealers no longer have their implant attack but it didn't stop me modelling it on them, hehe.
I hope to have a termagant brood of 8 done in a couple of weeks along with the carnifex. Potentially a warrior to see how the scheme works on him. i will post some WIPs of my sky-slashers and prime later and probably my blind genestealers too!

Please be nice a critical, I think the flesh colours need some highlighting so let me know what you guys think. Thanks for looking!

The carapace looks good, but needs something to blend the layers together. Some watered-down ink or a glaze would do the trick, I think.

The "flesh" (who knows what Tyranids use anyway) is nice, light and contrasting with the carapace, but needs depth. Shading, rather than further highlighting, would do the trick here.

    Good colourscheme, though.

I have tried to separate the layers of the carapace with a little shadow between each. I will get some photos up tomorrow when I have good light to get some shots of it a bit better. I think it works well at the mo but I like the idea.

I will be trying some shading of the exoskeletal bits, I think a mix of bleached bone and tallarn flesh may work, I don't want anything too strong to bring the overall tone down too much.

Exoskeleton sounds nice and alien I'll go with that till I'm corrected!

Thanks Chebba! I've checked Phil kelly's scheme out, I hadn't come across it before. It's very striking. Can't find anywhere that says its the Jormungandr colours tho so I'm happy if I'm wrong or right. I mainly liked the idea of having an army with a good story behind it but not a mainstream hive like leviathan or behemoth so I have a good amount of wriggle room to adapt it to my schemes.

Here are the WIP's I mentioned:

    Tyranid Prime

My Tyranid Prime is converted from a warrior using standard warrior bits, plasticard and greenstuff.

He is based on THIS Tyranid Prime conversion which I adapted to my taste.

He is a good inch taller than your regular warrior and with his big boneswords he stands out nicely

This is my first conversion of any serious scale in a long time so please let me know what you think

    Sky Slasher Brood

This picture gives a good idea to what I'll be aiming for. The wings are done in the thinnest plasticard I could find with greenstuff to hold them on and give them the ribs.

I still have to put the wings on the third ripper obviously. The metal rod seen in the first image is the remains of my original attempt with wire and greenstuff but the came out rather terrible! I'm fairly satisfied so far with them but they are fiddly as hell and I have a feeling pretty fragile too so I'm cautiously optimistic at this stage. They're certainly cheaper than the forgeworld alternatives and will hopefully paint up well enough to pass off ok!

Again, please comment and criticise as much as you like! I'm also happy to answer an queries if there are any... Thank you all

    Re: Hive Fleet Jörmungandr

Eeeek... Double post! Best be careful else I'll appear productive

So here's a few quick images of the carapace from behind.

I think that shows the shadow between the plates I mentioned

And another from an angle I hope my enemies never see

Also got my first termagant done

I've also shaded the exoskeleton a little and I'm pretty please with the result

It's a bit rough but for a test I'm happy enough

    And my genestealers

Bit annoyed I didn't get the flashing marks out when I put these together 3 years ago....

    Thanks for looking

Really like your scheme- it's really clean and well executed and your conversions are great [particularly love the flying rippers!]. Wouldn't worry about the mould lines- it happens to the best of us and at least you have noticed them at the priming stage rather than after you have finished painting them!

Really cool colouration, here. Your Prime looks suitably "Come get some...!", too. Very nice + clean painting as well.

Nice simple color-scheme. It looks clean and easy to reproduce which I bet is a good thing when painting a Tyranid army.

I figured he should be fairly bad-ass Thanks!

Thank you, I'm glad with the results I'm getting but I'm sure I'm painting them the long way, I'm fairly slow!

Thanks man, the flesh is as follows:

    1. Primed white
    2. Base coated in tallarn flesh
    3. Washed with watered down scorched brown
    4. Painted with bleached bone
    5. Second coat of bleached bone to get it nice and smooth
    6. Shaded in with 50/50 mix of bleached bone/tallarn flesh
    7. Tidy any areas with scorched brown wash

This part takes the longest closely followed by putting the highlights onto the carapace. Mainly painting all the exoskeleton/flesh areas with bleached bone as I leave all the gaps and shadow areas so I have to be really accurate and can't just wash a coat over any areas of the model which means it progresses very slowly. I think you could speed this up if you paint it bleached bone to begin with and then carefully wash in the shadows and edges with darker shades. The reason I don't do that myself is I learnt art this way and I have been taught to layer up things in a fairly literal manner when painting and doing it the other way doesn't sit with me for some reason. I hope that helps you out!

Been doing a fair amount of painting, I have progressed rather well with my carnifex and I will hopefully have him done after a few more evenings working on him. Also trying to get going with my genestealers too. I think I need a list or maybe a target for two weeks or something so I can measure my progress... My 'to do' list is rather lengthy!

I really like your nids mate! Really nice paint scheme that is well executed, even your lowly gaunts look very nice. Great Sky Slashers! I quite like your Prime conversion, one criticism would be that the swords are a little bit squarish in shape, perhaps a slight curve on the front and back sides to be more scimitar like, or even try more of those barbs like you have near the handle. In fact even chopping the top off at an angle would make it look more organic. Just a thought, keep up the excellent work!

Thank you! I will try giving the top of the swords a greater angle, I like the idea. The swords curve a little, it doesn't come off in the photos as it's very slight.

    Ok, update time!

Not as far along with the carnifex as I would have liked. It is taking forever to get done but I'm happy with how it's looking so far.
Needs a little tidying in places but enough chat, here's some proof:

    Looking hungry!

Facing down my first finished genestealer

    From above

    From behind

    And finally the side

Well that's all I have for the moment. The carnifex needs his carapace highlighting and exoskeletal/fleshy areas cleaning up. Then his base painted.
The genestealers are all base coated but painting all that bleached bone on each one isn't tremendously appealing but that's my own fault for coming up with this scheme! Happy with my first one tho. I need to to get working on the gaunts too. So much to paint, so little hours in the day to do so... Fingers x'd the carnifex will be complete within the next 2 weeks.

    Thanks for looking all

Finally finished him! So glad he's done.

It's been a while and not much else to show so here are a few more angles (apologie for poor lighting! ):

The group shot of all that is completed

Well that's pretty much all the painting I've managed to do recently. Had a few games in the meantime tho so I have a much better idea of what I want in my army. The parasite of mortrex and doom of malan'tai are both a lot of fun... I need to find some norse fluff to rename them by

I have been trying some conversions out too.
Here is a shrike I've wanted to try after seeing THIS guide a while ago:

Not sure about the size of the wings. I may try and fork out for some FW ones depending on how I feel.

And to conclude I leave a small teaser of what I have in the pipeline:

    Thanks for looking all!
