Hi,
I am planning a battlefield tour of Ypres soon. I hope the red flowers will be there the, the poppies.
Does anyone have a clue as to when they are out? I have no clue what these flowers are called.
Cheers!

April to August.
Field poppies, Flanders poppies etc., apparently that plant has half a dozen names in English.

Mordian/Praetorian Lovers of Warseer
My random Sci-Fi Plog, mostly Imperial Guard, Dark Eldar and CSM Recently finished: Mordian Rapier Laser Destroyer, also several tanks WIP
Botanical name is Papaver rhoeas. Red Poppy, Flanders Poppy, field poppy. Depends on where you live as to what it is called.
It's in the same family as the opium poppy (papaver somniferum) and Papaver orientalis but unlike var. Somniferum does not produce any narcotic compounds or alkaloids.
Grows well in "disturbed ground" (battlefields).
It's an introduced feral weed here, "iconic" and "historic" attachments aside. Like the blackberry and mexican marigold.

Holy moly, you guys know your plants!
Thanks, so May should yield poppies around Ypres.

I used to grow ornamental poppies (and a few var. Somniferum plants - because I got some in a shipment of poppies). It's actually illegal to grow that cultivar outside of certain government maintained farms (most of which are in Tasmania).
var. Somniferum needs to be concentrated and processed to make morphine or heroin, but sedative "tonics" are easily made from the juice of the flower buds (a uni mate studying pharmacology found my little garden quite useful - between the nightshades and monkshoods and the other random plants)

The flower is called klaproos in Dutch. Try and learn to pronounce it by the time you go to Ypres and impress the locals![]()

I should be able to pronounce it, I am Dutch myself.
And Chromedog...sheez, are you a witch or something?

We would still be impressed![]()
Witch? No. Bunch of wanna-blessed-be's.
I did have an ex-girlfriend who WAS into that stuff though. We fell out over a choice she wanted me to make for myself - I chose not to walk that path.
They just don't take much in the way of effort to maintain and the flowers are often quite "pretty" (according to the girlies. Impressing them with your gardening skills is a handy thing).
