Is there any room for lone characters?

Just as the title states. Has anyone had any luck with lone characters? I've been toying with a lone oldblood on coldone.. A lone priest, and two lone chieftens on terradons. The oldblood has the blade of realities and a. 1+ as the chieftens run staff of suns and the other item that shoots a magic missle. They hunt redirectors and warmachines plus light calvalry. The priest flies over and uses the slanns ability to hurl magic missiles from the sidelines.

Lizardmen do this better than pretty much anyone. The Saurus with a 1+ rerollable save and the crown of command is a fairly common sight, and very annoying to play against as he can tie up most hordes for the whole game.
At the other end of the spectrum, I like lone goblin big bosses on wolfs (rather than wolf rider units) for their cheapness ans relative survivability, compared to standard light cav units.

What kind of set up would you run on the dragonslayers? They don't have armor saves do they?

Naked. They are not that easy to take down if you play them smart, and they can be quite good at babysitting your gunline! 2 of those to protect 5+ artillery pieces from fast cav and small flyer units is quite effective

I have been toying with the idea of a master or a dreadlord on a manticore......
Only against armies with no shooting though.
Is a dread lord on manticore w pendant of khaleth, ogre blade, full armour and shield a good idea?
Of course he would have crown of command, but then he would need to go to crimson death.....

Sure, it is dependant on match-up mind. I still use an Alter-Noble an awful lot (wood elves) - generally as a torpedo vs Hellpits/Vargulfs/Etheral stuff etc. He makes his points back pretty often - 6 strength 7 (potion of strength) flaming attacks and an 18 inch march are useful! He's quite easy to hide, and opponents generally forget about him and focus on larger tree-based threats. And where I play, people don't take magic-missiles much anymore, nor much in terms of shooting.

That said, he gets mauled by other skirmisher heavy armies - skinks especially like ruining his day...

I love my solo lords. I play with mounted Warlords with skaven, doombulls or wargors with beastmen and old bloods on carnosaurs. It works in our group, not sure on the meta though.

Skaven is my main army.. I've ran solo warlords with fellblade before.. I hate their lousy leadership though.. So unless you outright demolish what you hit.. He will break and get pursued

Yes, cannons tend to mess with this idea.

Let me stop you right there. No. I might take a manticore if it was as expensive as a pegasus. Maybe. But there's just no justifying it at 200 points. You're almost certainly better off with the flying mount that can't be shot out from under you.

Re: Is there any room for lone characters?

    True.
But against not so shooty armies w no access to missiles at all.....
I would rather go the dark steed over pegsus, I can hide in units that way, if need be, not be in full view.

I saw a battle report where a solo chieften with cloak of feathers and bsb charged a cannon beat it with combat Res(+1 charge +1 standard) and they fled and lost the cannon. How useful is that?

Re: Is there any room for lone characters?

A lone warlock with dommrocket / brass orb / death globe behind the enemy line (skitterleap) is always in my army.

Also had some success with a lone Plague Priest with Plague Censor skitterleapt behind the enemy.
With dragon bane to save him against some fireballs. Not expensive and with the right spell (the aera effect spell from plague) really good!

Lizards can do it really well with Scar-Vets on Cold Ones, or the Party Frog.

Dark Elves can do it really well with Pegasus characters, or even Lords on Dark Steeds.

Brets can do it pretty well.

Yeah I forgot about WoC, the Stubborn Lord on a Disc is pretty nasty.
