An eagle-headed totem? That's a very insightful suggestion...

Which brings to my mind... There was some really ancient fluff in Deathwing supplement to original Space Hulk where Dark Angels recruited from planet where the population were carbob-copies of great plains indians. Maybe the eagle head in the bikes really IS an eagle head?
I think Deathwing is 'indian' in honor to these plains folks.

Maybe the eaglehead is in honor of the Imperial Eagle?
A raven sculpt could have looked strange. Sadly, a lot of people playing 40k couldn't tell an eagle from a raven if the eagle was painted black.
Also, maybe there simply are no living Ravens left on Terra, and so they had to use whatever birds head was available. Perhaps the only actual picture of a Raven comes from "Ye olde Beasts of Terra", with artworks by John Blance...
Maybe the Raven who's protrayed here flew into a Land Raider. "Did it look like that from the beginning, crooked beak and stuff?" "Sure, whatever, let's get this over with."
Maybe they bought "Made in T'au". Imagine Azrael raging through the Monitorum, with scattered eaglehead-banners across the room. "What in damnation is that? It's the RAVENwing, not the EAGLEwing. We are SO never buying Xeno brands again."

Many possible reasons. I still think the banner looks ace, so what's the big deal? =)
We both read the rumour, day and night,
but you read black where I read white.

It could be fielded as 100% mounted - Dreadnoughts and Moles could have transports back then - but neither transports nor tank units themselves were mandatory, it could be fielded as a pure footslogging force just as easily as it could a fully armoured one. , and there was no advantage to the latter (by comparison Deathwing had to include Terminators, and they didn't count towards the regimental Terminator maximum)
