KENSEI - preview of new fantasy wargame set in feudal Japan

Hello, i thought this could be interesting, at least for the minis, so i'll post it here, i hope is correct:

Zenit miniatures have showed some miniatures for an upcoming new wargame, set in the medieval/feudal Japan. Samurais, and all those things...

    Some pics:

They showed many of the new miniatures in a store of Spain, but no details yet about the game itself.

If someone like to see more photos, there are many more in this link.

    cheers

Minis look nice enough, but gawd I hope to all heck this is going to be a mass battle game and not some sort of Samurai skirmish game...

The miniatures certainly do look nice. Regarding skirmish vs. mass battles, I suppose I'd guess that if there will be an accompanying ruleset they'll be skirmish since the figures are awfully detailed and I would think not super cheap. Can't say I'd be too terribly swayed one way or the other, though, since if I were to do any samurai gaming it would almost definitely be the Legends of the Rising Sun adaptation of the other WHH games.

Still nice minis, and something to keep in mind.
The great thing about the dwarves is that, even though there's this comic element, when they fight - they really fight!

Those look nice. I followed the link and I think I will get the Sohei and Geisha.

Unless they are too big... I already have some tall models among my Samurai.

Re: KENSEI - preview of new wargame set in feudal Japan

It seems i was wrong. This is not a historical wargame, but a fantasy one.

At least that is what one of the creators of this game says.

    From this blog (in spanish).

I tried to translate it, i hope it will be understandable...

Kensei is a wargame of battles, inspired in the feudal Japan, but set in a fantasy world that will be revealed in a future. In the first launch of the game there won’t be magic or creatures, due to time requirements and to try to draw up the battles system for the game. For those that like historical battles, they can use these miniatures, because they are designed to fit the feudal Japan era.
In this game there will be three different factions: Kuge, Buke and Sohei. Each one will have their own units and common units that will be available for all the three factions.
About the rule set, the first thing to be released will be a beta that we expect to develop with the aid of the players. We hope it will grow with your help and contributions. It will be for download as a pdf file in a short time on the Zenit website.

The starter set for Kensei is due to be released on the 15th to 20th of May, and the preorder will be on the Zenit Miniatures website one month before.
This starter set will come with 21 miniatures: 5 ashigaru spearmen, 5 samurai with katana, 5 ashigaru with bows, 5 samurai with bows and 1 kensei. Only in the online orders made by the web will be included a free extra hero for the desired faction.
I'm sorry for my mistake, when i saw the miniatures, i thought this will be a historical wargame, so... If some of the moderators could move this thread to the correct subforum it will be great

Still very interesting, especially for fans of the Legend of the 5 Rings cosmos.

It also looks at though it'll be a unit-based game, and small like Wargods - but will it be skirmish, or ranked up (which is my guess).

Well, those look better than the Bushido and 100 Kingdoms miniatures, anyway. If I had a decent fantasy/historical-ish set of skirmish rules I'd consider picking some up.

Some of the photos in the link in the OP show what appear to be resin miniatures. They look awfully thin to be making gaming models out of resin.

Is it the law that any range of Japanese-themed miniatures must include a geisha? Never understood why, but presumably they sell.

They look nice, and depending on the price I may use some as chosen in a Tzeentch WOC army, or just start for anything.

please post more info on this game as it surfaces, looks interesting and with an infusion of magic and monsters it could fill a needed niche.

Anyone else starting to feel the vibe that 'WAR'games really need to be 15mm or smaller in order to get the 'epic' feel?

Nope. Scales largely irrelevant, and its all down to will power and money - if you want to recreate the battle of waterloo in 54mm its dooable, if you have nothing else to do, a nice field to landscape for it, and a large pot of cash 15mm always struck me as an odd scale - not quite big enough for quality painting, not quite small enough for mass battle. If you want to do really large samurai battles, I'd say go with Baccus 6mm. I have stacks of them and it barely cost me £30.

Anyway about Kensei - couldn't be happier. Bushido already do a rather nifty samurai-ish game but it always seems to quite miss the mark to me, so I'm quite looking forward to this.

They have released a number of new figures over the last few months. As well as a pretty tight little ruleset in Spanish AND ENGLISH.

More relevent to my intrests is the 8,000+ word short story they purchased from me to include in the hardback of the English rules when they come out. Teh historical research on that one was rigerous and brutal...

Sorry for threadomancy I'm trying to give relevant news without making a new thread.

Kensei is having a background-writing contest, and they will be giving lots of free goodies to people that win the first prize in various categories. Even if you don't win, you get the chance for your background or character to feature in their canon lore.

    Details here: http://kensei.zenitminiatures.es/en/...d-contest-2013
Note that the contest ends on the 30th of April, 2013

Zenit miniature is now running an Indiegogo campaign. There's even a perk for those wanting to get some samurai miniatures for rolaplaying games. I'm tempted to get some for my Legend of the Five Rings game.

Apart from that, this campaign's focus is on the fantasy creatures from Japanese mythology.

To help promote the campaign here are some samples of their concept art, and some of their work so far as a result of this campaign.
