    Re: Baldur's Gate returns!

I am mostly interested in if I can go back to 'linear' RPG play after 3-4 years of 'sandbox' with "Oblivion" and now 200+ hours of "Skyrim". And I played the heck out of BG II.

I also agree that if the story is the same, then I am not as enthused. I basically 'broke' BG II by playing a Vampire Hunter character (given how central certain vampires were to the main quest, being immune to many of the effects and having combat benefits against them was, well, broken).

Now this is interesting. BG3 anyone?

Asphodel, I really don't agree. In my opinion the BG series was as close to perfect as you will get with an RPG. Keeping the gameplay and story the same (minus a few gameplay tweaks like inventory pause and better toolbars) while bringing the graphics up to a 2012 standard is all that is needed.
Indeed. A graphics upgrade - improving the series to a modern level, whilst still keeping the same overall appearence is vital. Same with the gameplay - I like being able to pause combat and make various tactical decisions at any point before/during combat - it is, to me as close as is possible to the pen & paper RPG, but on the screen. Due to the advanced nature of tomorrows computers (this won't be out for a year or two I doubt) there should be scope for elongating the story, adding many more sub-quests or even new full length parallel adventures - all with reduced xp rewards to prevent early maxing out.

Baldur's Gate wasn't linear at all. You could deviate form the main storyline practically forever, taking subquests and just killing random monsters in the wilderness if you wanted to.

Having an overpowered main character would only get you so far. You needed to protect you other (five ) partymembers as well. Wizards and thieves were always inches away from death in big battles (at least in my experience). One wrong move and they ended up insta-gibbed non-resurrectable.

Baldur's Gate III was already in the making years ago. Nearly finished too. It was cancelled due to a loss of licence.
It would only be a spiritual successor though, featuring none of the characters of the original games.

    Yes, YES, YES!!!

I played the heck out of BG 1 and 2 and I would totally do it again. Bring it on!

I'm waiting to see what this graphical update is, could be just a higher resolution mod like those available for free. Second, I'm also curious what the additional content will be and how much extra's it will offer.

It's going to be a damned iPad app. Now I know how people who hate the ME3 ending feel. Soul crushing dissapointment.

Well thats the end of that, the graphics don't even look better then the normal BGII resolution. And if its Ipad only then I'll probably not buy it unless these things become more affordable.
The entire thing is a fan game, why release something so obscure for most newer gamers, its unlikely you'll get the 'younger' generation. Playing it.

    Ah well. Stupid iPads.

    Re: Baldur's Gate returns!

Torches and pitchforks away, folks, the iPad announcement is an addition to the PC one. At least, that's what every single news article I could find about this says. Either every video game site on the whole net is having a simulataneous lapse in professionalism and leaping to an identical conclusion, or they've been given the same press release.

    Re: Baldur's Gate returns!

It could still be a lot worse if it is just on the ipad. Makes me glad we were planning on getting the ipad 3 now (well, in a bit - when the initial bugs have been ironed out...)

There's no PC version mentioned on the website that I can see.

Yeah, I know, hence the panic, but I'm inclined to hope that the news reports stating that there is one are not the result of entire gaming press having a simultaneous brain haemorrhage.

I hope you are right, but until I see mention on the BG website of an actual PC version I'm not getting my hopes up.

You're right to be sceptical I guess, which got me thinking, this thread can't be the only place people are worrying about this, someone's bound to have asked about it. So I decided to click on the developers' twitter feeds at the bottom of the BG website page, and:

Excellent news (and detective work Bubble Ghost - although we really should have been a bit less lazy ). Just need to find out the features and prices now, the wait probably going to be as depressing as the wait for BG2

I'm a bit excited about this, since I have an iPad 2, and plan on getting a new one when they become available here.

I think it'll be interesting to see and I'll be downloading this as soon as it becomes available.
