Incredible painting tutorial. I will 100% be trying this technique on my Forgeworld Plague Hulk, but with a deep red as my "chipping paint" layer.

    I have a few questions;
    1. For the cracking, did you pick the crackle effect paint, or was it a transparent crackle effect coat?
    2. Have you sealed the whole thing with a varnish or gloss? I hear it dissolves certain crackle paints, but I'd want to protect any effect as delicate and cool as the one you've produced here!

    Thanks.

This is the crackle paint, it comes in several colors. http://rangerink.com/?product=tim-ho...-crackle-paint

The initial color was bright, but after several thin wash layers the cracks really came out. I have not sealed the model yet but I don't foresee any issues since I use Vallejo Matte Varnish which is acrylic based with an alcohol medium instead of oil enamel like most varnishes. Basically it can't melt anything...

About 3-4 hours to paint 40 troops.

First night was about 3hrs to lay all the paint down, second night was to airbrush the 3 washes.

Thanks again everyone! Here's Several Tanks I've been working on for Mariner's Blight. All of them were OOP Space marine tanks that I upgraded with new Chaos tank parts and Baneblade engine exhausts.

I added lots of valve seals and airlocks for that submarine look as well as Harpoon Launchers on the Rhinos. Extra armor plating, tow hooks and ladders completed the look. The Dozerblades on the vindicator are from Kromlech.

So you airbrushed basically all the colors on your Marine? What air brush do you use? In the time it took you to paint 40 Marines, I can paint two miniatuers.

I have 2 brushes. A basic single action Paasche for coverage and this one for detail: http://www.tcpglobal.com/airbrushdep...ision.aspx#G43

I still have to hand paint all the details so these guys are far from done. :P

imho, you fail a bit with the termi painting, you need to pick out the details on the mini alot more imho, since all I see now is a green blob, with some crackle on its shoulderpads.. =( sure the weathering is nice, but details man, thats what makes a beautiful model.. =)

And diver helmeted chaos marines = teh win.. :P

Dude, read some comments first maybe?

Sweet idea. Well executed. My only concern is that the thickness of the crackle paint looks like it is starting to obscure some of the detail on the models, and that this would be further obscured by any more layers of paint. Do you have a method to prevent this?

Maybe you should let me finish the model before you tell me how I failed... thanks.

The crackle paint does obscure some areas, but not all. It's only in patches. After I detail paint it'll all work out.

Have you thought about maybe using some tape or blue tack to cover up detail? That may work.

Where did this come from! Awesome work as ever. Was a big fan of your Dark Eldar. Satan's link to that old hortwerth log was a good trip down memory lane.
I love your paint scheme. it seem quick to do as well which is a bonus. What's the timescale for completion?

Re: Mariners Blight - A Maritime Inspired Lovecraftian Chaos Marine Army

Thanks again guys for all the compliments! Here's my latest addition; Mariners Blight Defiler Azathoth

This project has been a long time coming… One of the first models I conceived of for Mariners Blight finally become a reality. A mutated octopus , diver daemon engine of pure steampunk Lovecraftian evilness!

Named from Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos; Defiler Azathoth is a splice of a Collecta Octopus toy and a Forgeworld Khorne Blood Slaughter Impaler. I carried the top carapace armour pattern over to the octopus waist area and used Green Stuff Industries Tentacle maker to make loads of awesome tubing around the body core.

The arms were modified to be magnetized and the Khorne stylized impaler was converted to look like one helluva nasty harpoon launcher. The helmet much like my Mariners Blight Dreadnought was made by using a Chaos Tank Searchlight lens for a diver helmet look. The base was from Secret Weapon Miniatures, modified with a wrecked row boat and some additional floating skulls/bones.

heh, I just bought a cable maker too (the non-Greenstuff Industries one. Masq-mini I think) for making daemon engines! I was considering a slaughterer as a base but I don't want to blatantly rip your idea.

Btw, Maxmini are about to come out with a fairly cthullhoid shields you might like

the octopus legs could use a bit of subtle teching-up I think, otherwise it looks great!

The arms look a bit stiff i think, otherwise i love it. Loogs suitably heavy yet mobile. It kindsof brings out the same phobic feelings the original is supposed to, but instead of playing upon arachnophobia you play upon octophobia (dunno how to else explain, hope my point gets through).

    Thanks guys!

@Charax..I saw those shields the other day. Gave me tons of ideas :P Btw, please rip away, I'm sure both defilers will look substantially different in the end.
