Theres a million brilliant space-ship models out there , not just by gw but others such as spartan and all the other companies. Does anyone know any games that'll let us use them ?

Yeah Full Thrust from Ground Zero Games pretty much sets the standard for starship games

Been playing since 1991, so if I get the editions all mixed up, please been kind on me - my brain can't keep up!
Well, Spartan does have a ruleset that does along with the models: Firestorm Armada.

Just going to toss in Starmada as well. It isn't free like Full Thrust but it is updated much more regularly and the creation system for ships is a lot more flexible in my mind. Both games are great though.
Firestorm Armada is also a fun one with some really great minis. Shame that it isn't as heavily supported as Dystopian Wars since I actually like the basic rules quite a bit more and balance issues seem less glaring (honestly it is mostly just the freaking destroyers being crap in most of the factions and carriers being sub-par, beyond that it is all pretty good).
Full Thrust lets you use pretty much ANYONE's ship models in the game.
I've seen (Star Wars) Imperial fleets v Star Fleet (Star Trek) fleets or even Earth Force (babylon 5) v Star Wars, in addition to the numerous fleets available for the game from GZG themselves.

I am the guy who thought the LoTR movies were crap and liked Judge Dredd.
Space dreadnought 3000 is a good game and other ship can be easily adapted a long a each ship has its unquie hip number when playing etc.

Anyway, F:A is both nice and easy to play, with V.2.0 rulebook coming in late june/early jul. The models are, apart from the initial releases, very detailed for space games and not exactly bank-breaking.
Full Thrust is nice too, slightly more complex and with smaller-sizes of games in mind (the system's detailed so it kinda bogs down in large games) and you can use any models indeed.

Battlefleet Gothic is a good simulation of napoleonic naval warfare (the firepower chart in particular), it just happens to take place in space.
Spaceship games tend to have the advantage of being cheap. And fun. And without huge numbers of minis to paint.
You can get starting fleets for Full Thrust, Firestorm Armada, ACTA: Noble Armada and ACTA:Star Fleet for less than £35. Specifically Full Thrust - 13 ships £30, Firestorm armada - 10 ships £33.10 from Wayland, ACTA:NA - 11 ships, 8 fighters £22.49 from Wayland, ACTA: Star Fleet - 5 ships £30. Each of these packs provides enough ships ships to play standard sized games, but can all be expanded with additional blisters.
Generally rulebooks are in the range of £20. So around the £50 mark, and around the £80 mark if you want two fleets so you can provide ships for an opponent.
A battalion box from GW is now £60 (£48 from Wayland) and you'd need so much more. Terrain is also more complicated and expensive. While I've seen some lovely space terrain, you can make do with asteroids made out of rocks or polystyrene balls.
Check out this thread for some excellent but dirt cheap terrain

My mates and I have used BFG for a Star Wars game with no issues. They may not be everyone's pet rules but are freely available and fun. For a couple of games, one guy even came up with new statlines to make the Ships even more Star-Wars like (we usually just matched classes to existing BFG ships) and that worked pretty well too - though my Star destroyers might have been a little TOO shooty. One guys wants to do the same thing with Ravenstar's BSG style models. We've also considered using the Dystopian Wars rules too - since many of the faster playing spacefleet rules are effectively naval combat in space anyway.

I've played Full Thrust, and recommend it.
Firestorm Armada looks interesting, though keep in mind the models in that one are very big compared with most.

I'm thinking of getting back into Firestorm Armada with the new rulebook, that game is really fun. I already have a Dindrenzi fleet and I REALLY love the looks of the new RSA ships. The one thing that bugs me is that my first minis were really not of impressive quality. I got a couple replacements that were better, but most of my ships are still in the "repair bay" and that really made me and my friends who had the same problem stop playing.
I did get some Dystopian Wars minis later on though and those were much better. Anyone here got some ships lately? I'd like to know if the quality is better now, because the new designs and MKII ships sure look light years better than the first ones.
Thanks!

Got those old 5th edition lizardmen collecting dust? PM me, I really need more metal skinks with javelins.
In my experience the more recent FSA ships have all been of excellent quality, not a gram of metal or resin out of place.
And I share your enthusiasm for the new RSN, I already have some Destroyers and Escorts, when the rest of the ships come out I'm going to have increase to a full fleet, the models are so nice.
I did it again... bought minis when I shouldn't have. Well, I got a bunch of ships coming my way. I really hope the quality is as good as I hear. The new models design is definitely lightyears better than the first waves and I think no other game even comes close to how much value for money you get out of those kits. They are really affordable, especially considering the gargantuan size of some of them. Also, while luck can definitely turn a game upside down, I find the rules to be really so much fun, despite their simplicity.
