Thread: The secret best character in 40k?

Another vote for Cassius here - For the points you get a whole bundle of awesome.

Comedy value vote goes to DC Tycho though, no-one in thier right mind will seriously consider him.. but running with a DC theme'd army he's great just for lols barreling across the table, on his own (though when I do use him, I usually have him near or behind a footslogging bolter DC squad.. if he actually makes it into shooting range or CC, he can cause some havoc).

Re: The secret best character in 40k?

Some people have mentioned Belial. Problem with him is he isn't a secret and any Dark Angel player that wants to use Deathwing (50% of the DA community as far as I can tell) uses him.

I'm going to throw Brother-Captain Stern into the ring for being one of the best characters, my reasons are as follows:
For 50 points more than a regular Brother-Captain you get get Strands of Fate which is pretty awesome if you know when to use it.
You also get Zone of Banishment which is pretty insane considering you can just assault the enemy on his own and pretty much ruin the enemies day.
He has 2+/4++ out of combat and 2+/3++ in CC.
He is still a psyker and can insta-kill people with his force weapon.
He still has all the other nice treats Brother-Captains have.

The W1nn0r for this thread would surely be Sergeant Lysander from the Space Marine Codex from Christmas Past? A man who just re-rolls bolters. Not heavy bolters, or assault cannons, or storm bolters, but just bolters.

Funnily enough, it is the man.

But in this day and age, I'd go with as a personal preference, Chaplain Cassius. Who uses this guy and feels like he is a champ? T6, W2, 4++ keeps him in the game to dish out punishment, plus all the rest of the Chaplain squad perks. Killah for the amount of points he is.

Failing that, Sly Marbo, every time.

Lysander. Drop him in a pod full of Sternguard, and the crying begins. Either they charge him, and deal with a combat monster + veterans, or don't charge him, and the suddenly amazingly accurate Sternguard destroy targets.

Of course, that's a ridiculous point expenditure.

Cypher was always a laugh particularly when fielded in a Guard army as an Elites choice as he could take a squad of CSM from C:CSM. This (with the 3.5E book) you could have Cypher and 20 CSM with veteran upgrades and daemonic gifts running around alongside Guard with allied Grey Knights!

I like Ulrik the Slayer, but you have to plan for him to get the most out of him, you can't just throw him down in any list. It doesn't hurt that SW have 4 HQ slots so your not really sacrificing a slot that could go to a more utility HQ guy.

Use his mentor ability to give a thunderhammer TWC guy WS5. Don't put wolf guards in units, this way you can get full squad special weapons bonuses and they wont need the LD upgrade as they will have re-rollable LD as long as they are in sight of Ulrik.

My other favorite is Ol' Zogwort. He is just so much fun in a more casual gaming enviroment. Unfortunately for orks their HQ slots are just sucked up with a Warboss and Big Mek in there because they get stuff that just is not available in the rest of the codex. There just is no room for the Wierd Boys.

I'm going to throw out the one that should be obvious here.

Vulkan Hes'tan, because of what he does for A WHOLE ARMY.
"From the fires of betrayal, Unto the blood of revenge, We bring the word of Lorgar, The Bearer of the Word, The favored son of Chaos; All praise be given unto him, For those that would not heed, We offer praise to those that do, That they might turn their gaze our way, And gift us with the boon of pain, To turn the galaxy red with blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods." - Excerpt of the 341st book of the Epistles of Lorgar.

Re: The secret best character in 40k?

    Marbo's tally for today:

Game 1: 3 Venomthropes and a wound off a tervigon (he didn't end up dying my opponent surrendered after turn two)

Game 2: 10 man Space Marine Scout Squad sitting on objective, 10 man space marine devastator squad (got hit with the demo charge), and a Vindicator

Summary: pretty damn good for 60 points...
And let the music of the swords make them crimson!
Hell grant soon we hear again the swords clash!
Hell blot black for always the thought "Peace!"

So you are saying that a space marine player:

    1) took a 10 man devastator squad
    2) deployed them somewhere where they had no cover save, yet we're all covered by a single pie plate
    3) had them all on the same level

And then, you rolled 10 2+ 'to wound' rolls?

And, after all that, you managed to kill an entire 10 man scout squad by charging them? What happened to their attacks on your 2-wound guardsman? Oh, and a vindicator?

I play guard. I know marbo is good, but that just looks like you're making stuff up.

if you think that all happened in one turn then our concepts of reality differ greatly. It was DOW deployment, Scout deployed in a forest near the objective, Dev's walked onto table, but failed their difficult terrain roll to enter the forest. Marbo appears in my turn 2, nukes the Devs, kills all but the 4 heavy weapons troopers. Next turn, marbo manages to survive sparse return fire, and assault the scouts. Scouts break from combat after 2 turns, run of the table edge (10" run, marbo didn't catch them). Marbo assaults the Dev squad in my turn, again he kills 2, the rest flee. Then he charges and blows up an immobilized vinidicator in turn 6. Over all pretty damn good showing.

Also another reason to never underestimate the rogue. I didn't care to notify my opponent of just how much potential damage marbo could do, and even after he nuked the Dev's, my opponent failed to allocate enough attention to Marbo before it was too late. using "Hit and Run" to get the most out of his attacks didn't hurt either.

Fair enough. I just found it difficult to imagine how he could do so much damage, even over the course of a game. Mind you, the last time I used him, his demo charge missed, then my death strike missed its target and killed him. I've been on a bit of a downer on marbo since then, but he will make his way back into my list soon I'm sure.

I vote for the changeling. For 5 points he is a must have , and the potential damage he can do on a failed LD makes him pay his points back. Even if the enemy is wise to your trick and doesn't target him, you still have a squad of 10 horrors, thats 30 str 4 ap 4 shots =)

Ah, I remember the Changeling. Doubles tourney, my Dark Eldar (old book) allied with a Daemon player against CSM and Daemons. The Changeling made my archon and her unit fire everything at a Nurgle daemon prince, and they caused two wounds on it. They never shot that well before.

I'd have to argue he is, considering I was the first person in 3 pages that had mentioned him.

he wasn't mentioned because the thread is about the "Secret Best Character" not the one every other vanilla marine player takes.

    Best secret character?

If I told you it wouldn't be a secret now, would it?
