I have to go with Baharroth on this one. He's not a super-uber deathdealing machine, but who else can deepstrike anywhere on the board multiple times, and with a jump pack too? Despite his comparatively meager equipment I've seen him carve up GK Terminators, whole 20 man Wych squads, and lots of other stuff. I guess I just have a lot of luck with him. Usually I send him after isolated targets like lurking Battlesuits or Devastators. He makes a great assassin of units weaker than him and if he gets into a bad situation he can always fly away and come back somewhere else. Plus he's the best looking Phoenix Lord of all.

Well he's the best kept secret in my area apparently. I'm the only one that uses him at our Bunker, and that's only when I drag my Salamanders out for a game.
"From the fires of betrayal, Unto the blood of revenge, We bring the word of Lorgar, The Bearer of the Word, The favored son of Chaos; All praise be given unto him, For those that would not heed, We offer praise to those that do, That they might turn their gaze our way, And gift us with the boon of pain, To turn the galaxy red with blood, and feed the hunger of the Gods." - Excerpt of the 341st book of the Epistles of Lorgar.

    T-Dog (Trazyn) the Infinite.

Simply cause he snags objectives and is the only named Necron char with the greatest words ever uttered. Mindshackle Svarabs. And the Empathic Obliterator, AKA the Magical Ork B Gone Stick. And that poor Cryptek who took the Haywaire Staff and all the vehicles are gone? Well, don't worry, he might be usefull. My T-Dog only has one wound left!

In a friend's game against an all Death Corp BA list, he only had T in a group of warriors. He detatched, moved the warriors 1 inch away from the assault guys (The ones that HAVE to attack the closest enemy and subsequently did) and moved T onto the objective. He was the only model the 'crons had on the field and the only unit on the board that could score objectives and he won the game. Then I'm assuming he ran like hell.

You could make a case for every one of the Phoenix Lords for Eldar in this thread lol. I am surprised that no one mentioned Chaplain Grimauldus for the Templars. He's tough to kill with his stand back up rule and he has a Holy Relic that doesn't count towards the limit the army can have. He's also not that expensive for what he does really. Is Typhus a secret character in this mix for Chaos? Not used by a lot of people but a potential badass in the right squad. Azrael has a 4++ bubble around him, not too shabby. Tigurius for the Ultramarines? Paired with Khan in the all flanker list he's a really useful character. Wazdakka for the Orks? He's a pretty good character, especially in a mob of Nob Bikers. Kugath for the Daemons? Can throw down a pie plate that is ap2 and wounds on a 4 up regardless. 6 wounds and feel no pain too.

I wish people would stop posting characters that are used by everyone. I went to a tournament and there were 3 Eldar players. I looked at their lists and every single one of them had Yriel and Eldrad. Every SM list had Lysander, Vulkan and Telion. Every IG list had Marbo. Nearly every Nid list I faced had Doom until that FAQ. It's unbelievable how many Mephistons there must be. I think the OP should have posted a list of common special characters first. Can't wait for the people claiming Draigo is the best kept secret since the Prophet of the Waagh.

I have yet to see anyone field Nork. I think I may try him just to see what you are talking about.

Re: The secret best character in 40k?

Ok, I went to a tournament today, and my secret best character vote now goes to Maugan "I'm basically going to single-handedly win you the game" Ra. Pleasantly surprised by how awesome he was.

His personal kill tally for today (1500 pts):
    3 Squads of Lootas
    Random Orks
3 Combat squads of tactical marines
    couple TH/SS termies
    Emporer's Champion
    Chaplain
    A bunch of regular templars
Strategically important Rhino (which, best of all, had a smoke save that I promptly ignored)

It was basically every time I shot, I could count on him to do something. I think there was only 3 times over the course of 3 games that he failed to do anything, and two of those were against front armor of a Predator.

I'm amazed that noone has mentioned the humble guardsman. While not the same named character, they in their faceless billions have brought down monstrous creatures, assassins, super humans, daemons, battle tanks and many other threats to humanity. while it may take a hundred to down the next threat, it is fine on account of the fact that there are trillions standing behind them if they should fail.

I'm amazed that you think they are characters, they are the fodder and noise that's in the background. It's like worrying about the names of red shirts in star trek episodes.

Funnily enough, this is something that annoys me to no end. When everyone takes the same characters, regardless of their army, it takes something away from the fluff... if you're taking Lysander I expect your army to be Imperial Fists; if you're taking Vulkan you'd better be fielding Salamanders. I don't want to see Straken leading an army of Cadians or Kharn amidst a Tzeentch army...

But I guess that's what I get for thinking that the fluff and the game should be intertwined :/

In the Space Marine codex at least, the named cgaracters are designed to be archetypes. You are actively encouraged to field your own version of, say, Sgt. Telion, in your custom Doom Weevils chapter, simply changing his name and colour scheme as appropriate.

I, like you, I suspect, do not like the preponderance of special charcters in this edition, but that is the way the game is designed these days.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it,

Re: The secret best character in 40k?

GW rules only support buying more expensive models. SC are usually more expensive then their normal breathren. I see Marbo painted up like a Cadian a lot. Lysander looks pretty good in Salamander Green, and so does Telion.
Personally, I don't like seeing SC in armies that don't match either. I know that GW is just trying to sell more models, so I don't fall into their trap. My Catachans have Marbo and Harker because they are fluffy. My Ulthwe has Eldrad, but never Yriel. THough, if you take into account his current status, I really shouldn't be fielding him either. My Deathwing has Belial. I've found it awfully hard to justify using a SC from a differnt army background in your army simply based on the idea of fluff. If you love the model, use it as a normal version of someone from your list. If you are using the SC because they are clearly more powerful and offer you special rules that you need in order to win games then just say so and stop representing a person who is not in it to win every game they play.
My favorite under used SC is still Fuegan. He was the first model who's paint job I was proud of. I love fire. I love dragons. I never field my Eldar without him.

Re: The secret best character in 40k?

Well, my cadians have a Harker and Marbo equivalent. The Harker model is just great, and I use a cadian custom equivalent for marbo. Needless to say they are alternatively named, and I dont see a problem with that, its how the game is designed and intended to be played.

In terms of Mephiston facing another Mephiston, I justify it as a parallel world type face off, or my Mephiston (thee real Meph obviously) is facing off to an evil clone that doesnt realise he is an evil clone.

    Why.....because its fun.

Re: The secret best character in 40k?

The only reason I didn't say Yriel in my origional post is because every other Eldar player I have witnessed in the tournament scene and friendly games as well has been using Eldrad as their first choice for HQ and Yriel as their second. So I don't really consider Yriel as one of the secret best characters in 40k...how could he be a secret when everyone and their brother uses him?

    That's why I chose Asurmen.
