Just thought I would write up a quick battle report of the game I played monday.
It was 3 of us, so we played a free for all. I was WE, another WE and Beastmen. Game was who had the most points within 6” of Wizard’s tower at the end of the game.
Other WE play had a small 10 man unit of archers, 2 hordes (30) of archers, treeman and 6 treekin with a LVL 4.
Beastmen had Giant, Cygor, Harpies, small unit of ungors, another small unit of ambushing ungors, a chariot, and horde of beastmen with General and BSB.
I had 2 small units of archers, 2 small units of dryads, general with fast cavalry, LVL 4 (with archers), treeman, great eagle, hero on great eagle, BSB (with archers), dryad hero.
We wanted to get the gaming going fast as it was almost 6pm when we started, so we dumped terrain and our armies, not much strategy here in the opening turns.
The first couple of turns was not that exciting. 2 hordes of WE archers is pretty incredible though. He moved first towards the tower, and than sat there all game hammering us with shooting while the treekin and treeman held the flanks. I spent 4 turns shooting at the treekin and caused . . . 0 wounds!
By the end of the third turn this is where we were. I lost my fast cavalry to shooting, my hero on great eagle died to a spell, my great eagle died to shooting.
Beastmen lost his giant to my dryads (he didn’t inflict one wound) and lost his unit of ambushing ungors to my great eagle. His horde of beastmen was down to 50% as the WE was concentrating all shooting against them. Chariot was also dead to shooting (but lasted 2 turns!).
WE lost his treeman to the horde of beastman, small unit of archers to my hero on great eagle and his LVL 4 mage blew himself up.
At this point me and beastman guy where moving in on the tower and he was complaining we were ganging up on him. Which of course we were as he was winning.
Turn four was the last turn and decided the game. To give you an idea of layout, beastman’s horde was in charging distance, cygor was moving in, harpies were in charging distance on flank, his ungors were way back doing nothing. WE player had both hordes of archers within 6” of tower as well as 6 treekin. I had my treeman running up towards tower. My General was hiding behind tower (his unit was dead and would not last long against all that shooting). I had both units of dryads moving towards tower as well as both units of archers. I cast wyssan’s wild form on my dryads (lore of beasts is pretty underrated) and charged his treekin and broke him. My general flanked his treekin. My treeman died to the spear spell from lore of beasts (again, same spell that killed my hero on great eagle). Beastman charged one horde of archers with his horde of beastman and almost got held up! By this time the horde of beastman only had 12 guys (from 40) and the archers still had 15 (giving him more ranks, thus steadfast!) but the WE player did not take a BSB (why?) and so he failed his Ld 8 and fled. This would have made a huge difference.
By the end of turn 4 WE player had one horde of Archers left. I had 2 units of drayds, 2 units of archers, general, LVL 4, BSB and dryad hero. Beastmen had horde of beastmen, harpies, cygor and small unit of ungors.
I made a mistake here. Moving my mage away from his cygor (so I don’t miscast) I moved her more then 6” from the tower! The next mistake I made was moving my small unit of archers with my BSB to the left to shoot his Cygor. Firstly his cygor was not within 6” of the tower so it was stupid. Secondly, this moved them more then 6” away from the tower, so again I moved another 300+ points out of the 6” marker!
Because of these two stupid moves the Beastmen player won as he had more points within 6” of tower. It was a good game.
Learning points, hordes of glade guard are not too be underestimated! Lore of beasts is pretty good. Dryads are not to be underrated! My fast cavalry suck, I have used them in 4 games now and have not once done anything. Not taking them anymore.
